I did enjoy watching your video tonight!! Since you don’t sketch there are no pencil lines on the paper, which makes it so interesting to see where your lines are going next! Next thing you know, there is a garden, sidewalk, wall, and building. And it all comes together beautifully. Wonderful video Katie and truly, a beautiful piece of art in your journal. ❤❤❤

Could you report back to us in a few months if the highlighters have faded? I use a similar set of name brand highlighters but they are definitely NOT lightfast; the lighter ones (particularly the neons/fluorescents) faded significantly over time -- even in a sketchbook. (The sketchbook does get opened a lot though, particularly outside on sketch crawls.) Definitely don't make art with them if you plan to hang up your picture on a sunny wall! Would be nice to hear your experience with them as time passes... Thanks! Really cute painting, btw! :)
@KatieMoody2 күн бұрын
Oh yes of course, what a great idea! I didn't mention about them being lightfast in this video, as you say I'm pretty certain they wouldn't be but it's really interesting to hear that the lighter ones are worse! I'll keep my eye on the sketchbook page and see if it fades - I'll probably do a tour of this sketchbook in a few months time so I can update you then! 💛

Very fun video 😄 I have seen pieces people have made using highlighters, but not the process, so thank you for taking us along your experiments. I really love how it turned out, and the colour palette definitely suits you 😊💜 I think this would be a great exercise for loosening up, because you don't take it so serious when you have some highlighters. And you've kinda forced to embrace the texture of the mark making. Definitely going to try this in some way 😄

Ive been using a sketchbook thats sort of in between these two lately (because i like to use one sketchbook for drawing/inspiration/journaling, collage and any other bits and bobs) The sketchbook is actually the soft cover Strathmore drawing sketchbook. Its similar to the mixed media (which I LOVE btw) but its more off white, a little thinner and has 96 pages instead of 64. Its also slightly cheaper. Even the b5 is only around 15 dollars US. I just wanted to throw that out there. It takes watercolor surprisingly well so of course gouache works perfectly. Colored pencils are great in it too.

How do the brush pens cope with the royal talens sketchbook paper over time? I splashed out on some tobows but am scared to ruin them on the wrong/too rough paper!
@KatieMoody6 күн бұрын
If you layer over the brush strokes a lot the paper will start pilling, but generally I find the paper holds them well! I've used them on both sides of a page before and not had any issues, and the brush pens can hold up to a lot of pressure too! I definitely encourage a playful approach, you may be surprised by how much you can push them 😄

Thank you so much for using the Inktense pencil products as intended, and for placing that section right up front in the video! Most of the time when I search KZbin for Inktense pencil tutorials, the pencils make a cameo, while the Inktense pan paints get most of the screen time. That, or they'll draw on a palette and paint with the pencils that way the entire time. Watching you push through that first piece was instructive for me and I'm really impressed how it turned out.

Great ideas and suggestions/references. Thinking about other resources, print catalogs and magazines...the few that still exist. My husband gets Hemmings Motor News filled with all kinds and years of cars in different colors and angles. We get a bird and flower magazine with great photos. Of course, those would be copyrighted but for studies and sketchbooks... Certain museum collections, not of art but of objects... Fun!

I think you summarise all the best ways to get references 😊 I definitely need to try to draw more from life and from old drawings too! Usually I choose the easiest way, and just look for a reference that is ready to start 🙈 also would like to mention an weekly art challenge that I run on Instagram with an artist friend, it's called The Botanica Collective and every week we share a photo (with credits and previous authorization from the author) for artists/creative interpret in their own way 🌿 it's all about botanica, you may like it Katie 🤗

Drawing from reference bridges the gap between observation and memory. To work from memory, you need plenty of images in your memory bank. Working from reference helps to fill it up. Someone in the comments already suggested it, but I would add the work of the masters as great references. The goal isn't to make an exact copy, but to learn why you admire that artist, and think of ways to bring those qualities to your own work.
@KatieMoody9 күн бұрын
Oooh yes that's such a great point, we fill our memories with the scenes that we observe and can then reference! And yes I totally agree, it's amazing what we can pick up when doing master studies - something I need to make more time for! Thanks so much for sharing 🥰
