I saw this on TV today and find it rather haunting viewing. I've used those underground steps at Bethnal Green underground station (although not as they were) a few times since 2000. The last time was very busy, as the evening of All Points East / Field Day festival. Crowds were well managed by plenty of police, inside the station and outside. Makes you think.

Yes, the wonderful Liz Smith. I was only wondering recently whether shortages during the War were responsible for Mrs Cropley's "unique" experimenting with cooking ingredients.

Sounds like the voice of the fine actor Ron Pember as the narrator? Two years after this was made he played Alain Muny in the brilliant Secret Army 77-79.

Was Liz Smith ever a young lady? 30 years before Zillah and she was already a gran. I remember watching this when it was first shown, but didn't realise that was back in 1975. There were many personal tragedies during the war years that went largely unreported. The media kept such matters low-key in the interests of moral. Just over a year after the Bethnal Green Disaster came the Freckleton Air Disaster (23 August 1944) where a whole generation of children were killed in a school.

What brave people those Brits were during WWII. They were a nation of heroes in the truest sense. I don't know if I would have made it under such oppressive conditions.

Great movie showing the true history of the East End and the war that a lot of my ancestors lived through. Luckily none of the 173 killed were family who also lived in the Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Stepney, Mile End areas. Let us Remember those in this 80th year of Remembrance, please.

During the course of my work, I met a lady who lost her mum and two sisters in this disaster. She survived because she said she was a bit of a rebel and defied her mum when she said she had to go down the shelter, otherwise she would have probably perished too.

What makes these scenes particularly funny is the fact that all the actors involved are superb. I particularly enjoy Barbara Knox's (Rita) overreactions ("It's a drugs den!") and Stephanie Cole's (Sylvia) withering looks.

Rita, who's never had a gin out of her hand for 70 years, who was wed to an alcoholic who used to beat and verbally abuse her in his drunken rages and still reveres his memory had the gall to call them addicts for having a hash brownie? I'm so glad Dennis took off with Stella's mum. I bet they had a lot more fun than he would have done if he'd stuck around with that Poe faced old c0w. She puts on a lot of airs and graces for someone who used to be a stripper and married every penny she's got.
