Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your point of view I never got to stay in those barracks I was already married and in housing by the time those were built but I did stay in the old ones. And they were black mold everywhere

Wow. I was there in early 1966. The barracks were wooden slat building... and many of the slats didn't touch. So, the wind just blew through the building. This is amazing.

Those barracks look nice! At Fort Lewis I was living in 1950s Barricks filled with asbestos. This is back in the late 2000s.

Looks like the Waldorf compared to what we had there in 97-2000. It was the same room but no wall that separated the living room from the bedroom. The closets were not separated so we put our wall lockers where the wall is to split the room in half. No stove or sink, just a mini fridge with the microwave on top of it. No counter either. And the outside looked nowhere near as nice!!!!

I've had to call Fort Polk home the past couple years, and I don't miss it. The barracks were alright, but they really did come with a lot of frustration. For one, the windows don't open, so if the power goes out, you can't open them to let air in, and it gets real hot in that sweaty little butt-crack of an installation during hurricane season (sleep on the floor on your mat, it's cooler). The breakers also suck, if you're running a powerhouse of a PC, you'd better get an UPS so you at least have time to save whatever it is you're doing before losing power, or you'll probably try and do what this one guy did by trying to fruitlessly bolt the breaker switch in the upright position and winding up with either a statement of charges or a trip to the ER. I have also had to endure multiple mornings without hot water after morning PT, I've gotten used to taking a cold shower every now and then. Oh, yeah, and sometimes, the water will come out looking like Coca-Cola (just run the water a while to clear it up). The barracks building I was in does not have cameras in the stairwells or halls (and occupants just love leaving the front doors open), so we'd often have to deal with some stupid, worthless pieces of human garbage going in either pulling our fire alarms or discharging our fire extinguishers, leaving a huge mess that is also VERY hard to clean up entirely, all often around midnight and sometimes multiple times in one night.

A lot different than when I was stationed there from 1965 to 67. We only had to complain about no hot water in our showers. World War II barracks with who knows what was used in building them. New barracks are better that my first home.

Army says it's having enlistment and retention issues, but people just kept going to Fort Polk, like a cruel joke to the in-processing soldiers and the facility managers.

Actually I preferred the old WW II wooden barracks for our troops at Ft. Polk. After moving into the new barracks there was more problems. The SNCOQ was still WWII wooden buildings and the BOQ was new. North Fort was still all white painted wood back then. Dragon 8.
