The internal SSD getting faster after three attempts makes sense because it learns what you want to continually open so it will open it faster like how the SSHD's 8GB cache learns what programs are frequently used so it opens them faster after multiple launch times.

FINAL RESULTS: Internal SSD: 1. 122 seconds 2. 105 seconds 3. 101 seconds Average = 109 seconds External SSD: 1. 111 seconds 2. 108 seconds 3. 114 seconds Average = 111 seconds External HDD: 1. 140 seconds 2. 141 seconds 3. 146 seconds Average = 142 seconds Summary: Results are best from top top to bottom but the result times are still pretty close. I (the owner of this comment) have an internal SSD and enjoy the benefits but it was costly. If you don't want to spend a lot of money then go with an external HDD for extra space. You could also get a small internal SSD (125 GB or 250 GB) and then a big 1/2/4TB external HDD

I get people want comparisons with recorded timed footage but there's plenty of those videos online and this actually does something else those others don't. Most share only one test or a single number average. While you showed the full times on each load. This is important because something your results how unlike the others is that SSD load times get faster as it repeats the same game over and over. This is big for those of us who like to play certain games all the time or replay one frequently. It means long run in those situations a person is better using an internal SSD over the external ones so many other KZbinrs recommend.

There is one variable that I suspect was left out of this test; heat. The PS4 generates enough heat to cook your next meal when used for prolonged times. Any drive inside is going to be getting lots of heat, and will therefore slow down over time. This of course would only affect heavy users. Casuals need not to worry about it. But also casuals won't likely be getting an SSD. In addition, the less heat the external drive will get will preserve the drive for much longer. Thus giving more than the internal in the long run.

If I had known that SSD can reduce pop in, I would have done this a long time ago, but now that PS5 is coming, I hate to have to change out my internal again. I already threw a 2tb in there when I got my pro. If internal is truly better for pop in, I guess I will do it, but if external will do the same job more or less, I'd prefer that option. I also want an external for my Xbox one X. That one is not getting an internal. Lol Thoughts?

Keep in mind though the 24/7 loop recording that is happening while game is constantly writing to your system drive. That is a lot of data being sent daily to that drive for no reason. I think the best (and easiest) of both worlds would be to buy a SSD or SSHD and simply install it in an enclosure as an extended drive. Load all games onto it. You lose the slight improved PS4 boot up times but your SSD drive doesn't get the workload that way. I just ordered a 480GB SSD for $65 that I will use in a 3.0 enclosure. I did already install the system on a 240gb SSD and then realized the recording concern which is far better suited for a HDD since you can't turn it off. After my tests and moving drives around I did conclude the recording cache is always on your system drive. Saves are also on the system drive. My system is back on the stock drive and will transfer the 100gb of games over to the external SSD when it arrives.

Great test thanks for sharing mate! :) pretty much concludes what I thought, USB 3 connection is great but nothing is a substitute for internal. Though using EVO SSD's is a bit overkill doncha think? lol you can get these kind of results with SSD's half the price due to the limitations of the PS4.

Whats the dif between an ssd and a hdd? Is an ssd more expensive?

SSD is fast, but not worth the high cost for the time savings imo. Your only saving like 10-30 seconds a load. If you played the game an hour and loaded 6 times, you would have only saved 1-3 minutes per hour. If you play through the game in 60 hours, you would have saved just 1-3 hours of load time over the entire game. You can easily blow more than 3 hours of off task time sitting in class or at work in 1 month. SSHD seems to be the way to go.

Please keep in mind, PS4 Pro has USB 3.0 so the external load times will be good. Standard PS4 does not, so it would be interesting to see how the times on standard PS4 compare.

why would you choose a game that is impacted by network/ server speeds???? and how come your using 2 different class drives..
