Does this work with a 3d printed mold? my print filament is PLA+ and melts at 150-250 degrees celsius. Cheers.
@MrSmithDotShop16 күн бұрын
I haven't tried it with 3d printed molds but I suspect it would work. In another video I poured CerroBend into plastic tubes (pipettes) to measure the expansion during the cooling. I think the pipettes are polystyrene with a melting point around 240C to 260C which is much higher than the 180C of PLA. That said CerroBend melts at 70C. If you put your PLA print in boiling water does it soften excessively?

Nice!! What brand scissor table?
@MrSmithDotShop16 күн бұрын
It's a Blitz/Rotary Master Gear model: MGO. This came from a Volvo dealership. The pump didn't work and I'm not sure they every used it. It looked brand new. The local hydraulic shop found a tiny piece of swarf that was holding the high pressure pump open. Easy fix. The yellow tooling was all shop built and can be easily configured to other vehicles.

is that the same machine as circular saw for wood?
@MrSmithDotShopАй бұрын
Similar but this saw is made specifically for cutting mild steel. The rpm is lower. The chips are retained as opposed to being thrown everywhere. The saw is also fitted with resettable thermal protection to prevent overheating in the event you go over the duty cycle and/or are running a dull blade.

*_Im suspecting those rails are going to crack and break up on the milled areas after they are put under load from the locos._*
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
I assume you suspect edge fretting and checking due to them being milled flat. They were crowned onsite which should prevent abnormal wear. These are temporary transitions between badly worn track and a new switch. After installation the rail profiles were ground to match the old rail. It's easier to crown them during the grinding process as none of the rail was worn identically. Speed is already reduced on this section. The concern isn't rail wear but rather wheel damage. These will only be in service a few more weeks.

The model is on GradCAD: grabcad.com/library/60-live-center-grinding-fixture-1 you also should look at the full length video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWLJgoV8nJ6ai9U&ab_channel=RandySmith I would recommend changing the location of the set screws as they are difficult to reach without removing the crank axle. I also don't think you need the step pulley as I've always kept it on the largest pulley.

Get ready for the experts whining about the lack of coolant...
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
It's sure to happen. My guess is that it would still spark near the bottom even with coolant. The thermal shock would likely kill the inserts in short order. It would likely also evaporate a lot of coolant. Nobody likes a foggy shop, not to mention dealing with the wet chips. If I can run dry I will. I thought about setting up an air blast to keep the chips clear but this tool actually has fairly decent clearance and chip clearing wasn't necessary.

More. Safety gloves advised. The tool force on tool breaks wrong direction. Safety shoes on? The machine has safety door which is open during milling?.And the fleece vest will melt. We use mandatory cotton clothes. The metal is flying towards th user. Also the forklift is not calibrated and tested for safety. We also use good visible sticker for that. Do not put so much stuff on the machine. A falling machine tool is sharp too. At least safety glasses an ear plugs.
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
Good call on keeping too much junk on the machine. I cleaned it off today. The EU has some very nice safety clothing. I do need to address the cotton hoodies, not just for the material. The cut direction was my bad. This was filmed on a cellphone. I'll get a camera mounted inside next time. I didn't catch the prescription glasses he was wearing. A few different operators rotated through this job. I appreciate your eye to detail.
@harolddevries59772 ай бұрын
Ok teaching and learning is ok But putting a new part in on a not cleaned table? Really? In the Netherlands a poisoning fossil fueled engine is not ok in closed areas. Sliding loads on a forklift with other loads is really dangerous. And a homebuild lifting tool is only allowed after proof of design and testing with lot of rules and external companies. We are also not allowed to use a crane without study and also not if there is not an calibration and test sign with date clearly visible on the hook. You can get a fine if not obeying the rules and the company too if equipment is not safe. Wow!

Harold, thanks for taking the time to address all of the shortcoming of this job. This will prove to be a good catalyst to update some equipment and procedures in the shop. A new monorail hoist and rail clamp are in the works. This will allow the parts to be picked from the floor. Good note on the cleanliness, gloves, and other PPE. We discussed your points in depth and identified a few other deficiencies. We will correct our cowboy ways. Thanks, Randy

Lol. A 36 inch pipe wrech cast aluminum would still destroy this wrench, not really a functional wrench but a showpiece
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
I suspect you are right considering many of the quality aluminum pipe wrenches are forged as opposed to cast. This was also cast in an open mold which is terrible for uniformity and we do not have a heat treat oven big enough to bring this to a T6 state. But for display is has been great.

Thanks. I originally had a similar thought, I even grabbed some flat bar with the intention of putting a length across each end. After welding the round bar and checking the fit I decided this was adequate for the six 4' sections that needed to be tapered. If rail becomes a regular job I'll pick up a proper rail clamp.

Maybe it doesn't matter, but I'm thinking you've produced a slightly concave surface by doing it this way.
@RuudAlthuizen2 ай бұрын
Putting the taper in the fixture, by raising the part on one side would have helped. (Coming from an armchair “machinist”).
@Regal45552 ай бұрын
If the part is level, and the spindle is square, there is no concave surface. The taper was done in program.
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
Good catch. The concave is about 0.006", well within the tolerance. The customer didn't feel that would be an issue as the edges and crown will be ground into the rail following installation. Milling off the excess simply saves a lot of grinding later. If this was to be the final shape we would have fixtured it so that it could be milled perfectly flat.
@shanerorko80762 ай бұрын
@Regal4555 what were you saying?
@MrSmithDotShop2 ай бұрын
I'm saying I'm stupid... it is concave at the leading edge but once the centerline of the tool pass over it is square to the tool. I did offset the cut by 0.0347" to address the leading edge. The 0.006" came from me looking at the leading edge in CAD with concave on in my head. Simulation confirmed it was flat.

That's only half of a wrench. You're missing the other half of the sand casting box. You're supposed to put the wrench halfway into the sand. Then, take the 2nd box and press it firmly on the top. Creating 2 sand molds. You make a channel leading to the open space. Pour in the metal. Wait for it to harden. Then, pull it out. That way, you get the full pattern of both sides of the wrench. Instead of having the pattern on one side. Hope that helped
