That isn’t the peak light. It’s the PFL light that shows if PfL is ON OR OFF. Lmfao.

It doubles as both on this board. Many other boards are the same way. The light also says "PK!" next to it to denote that.

Does anyone check the volume knob on the remote mic reciever before it gets to the desk. I had one fella who had trouble with a wireless mic, as he'd only used corded mics....couldn't get a signal if he tried, but with my limited sound knowledge back then, I asked him if he checked the wireless reciever volume...("Duh" he said "Should have checked that shouldn't I?" with a cheeky smile on his face...sure enough...someone had turned that down before it was lent to him. Lucky the wireless mic set that was given to him, had it's own VU indicator to let him know it was working. Soon after everything was honky dory. A learning exercise for an experienced sound operator. After that, he had really studied up on it. Wireless mics had only just started coming in then so wasn't a common sight. Later on he was so proficient, he bought his own set of wireless mics. Even experts have to learn new things sometimes. Now he confidently works the digital desks. It was a learning experience for me when he was sending the wireless system signal to the prefader, and to the VU's on said desk. I've only learnt from watching others and picking their brains. You can read so much info in the manuals but until you tackle the desk or bricks, you don't learn anything at all.

Why would you want to set all your EQ's at zero as a starting point? We usually use all our setting where we set them in rehearsal so we have starting point. Is that wrong? What happens if you do, or if you don't? If you have a 7 or 9 band EQ on your mixer board what happens if you don't have it straight across? My group wants me to leave the EQ band like a V in order to take out the middle while boosting the bass and a little highs and then adjust the individual vocal's EQ setting as we go from place to place. This is a Quartet that sings Southern Gospel, do you have any suggestion of what we might be doing right/wrong? Our bass singing wants more bass support in his voice. We have the support in the music.

Great video! I use an iPhone into a mixer for backing tracks. I have heard source/phone should be at 100%. I back it off one click to 95%. You said 80% who is right? I PFL until red clipping and back it off until red disappears. Is this correct? I called Souncraft tech support and this was their suggestion.

Sorry for the late response. I can add a bit more nuance for plugging in phones, tablets, and other devices. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions since every phone and headphone jack is different. I have a Galaxy S9. It's not very loud, and the headphone jack doesn't distort at max volume, so I turn it up to 100% when I plug it into a board. Figuring out what works with your phone and board is a matter of trial and error. You want to eliminate noise and distortion as much as possible, and you don't want to run out of headroom and peak during the performance. Most quality phones will still give you accurate sound at max volume, so you might be good to turn it up the whole way. The method you used with the PFL is correct, as long as you're playing a loud song on your phone when you're setting up. If you set your preamp to a soft song, you might accidentally blast everyone when a loud song comes along. (I've done that.)

Well, In regards to the +48V, most DI boxes does need phantom power to run, which isn't an uncommon thing to see in a live setting. At my church we are using 4 DI boxes, which all need phantom power.

@tekasza
@tekasza 3 жыл бұрын
Technically it might work, but I must recommend against it. It could cause a number of problems. You might even get a short and fry something. It would also be difficult to control whatever you're plugging in. The XLR would be routed through the preamp, but a line input might not be depending on the board. It could do some weird things. But will it work? Maybe. I might even have done it when I was a noob. If I had a trash board sitting around, I would enjoy experimenting with it. But to keep my good name, I have to say don't do it.

The first piece of equipment you buy is a DBX drive rack. Did you hear me? Add a period and end of story to that. Then you can buy the rest. Remember quality matters a ton when it comes to a sound system. With great equipment u can do miricals. With junk equipment it's more like mission impossible so you do the best you can do with what you got but you can't make great sound with crappy equipment. At some point your hands are tied and you have to settle for the best sound you can produce with what you have to work with.

Learn how to properly turn your system on and off. This is done so there are no unwanted pops that can lead to damaged equipment. With all volume levels off, turn everything on then the power amps. To shut down, once the amps cool down a bit turn the volumes off and the amps off first then the board. Anytime you plug anything in or out of the system while it's running make sure the volume is off this is to help eliminate those loud pops that can damage your equipment. The power amp volumes get set first usually maxed or near maximum. Normally you set them then forget them. This is as loud as you can get. Then the gains and the faders and lastly the main outs. I've seen a lot of mistakes people wondering why it's not loud enough only to discover the amp is at half volume. The performers often cause most if not all of the feedback. Guitarist like to turn thier guitars up. Once you have them set for max volume without feedback and then they turn up, boom you got feedback. That's just one of a million feedback examples. The point is you can set that equipment and mix perfectly and it will feedback. You get the blame even though it's most likely not your fault. So have big shoulders and be ready for this. Don't just kick back and enjoy the show. The next thing you know is the singer turns into Axle Rose, starts swinging the mic. The mic gets to close to the monitor and feedback. Know where your max volume is so you can go there if you need to or want to but start out as conservatively as you can so things don't get out of control. Before you know it the club owner is mad because this ears are bleeding. The room can change. It can only have a few people at first by the end of the night it's packed. All this can effect your sound.

A few things that can help is to make sure any unused channels are muted and both gain and faders are off. This can help keep the board quiet especially with a cheap noisy board. Also cover your board to help prevent someone from changing a setting and having liquids splashed or even spilled on your board. No drinks near the equipment! Lastly, everyone thinks they can drive like Richard Petty. Just like everyone thinks they know how to run a board. Don't be afraid to learn. Ask questions from more experienced operators just be sure that they know what there doing. I like to set the faders to maximum then adjust the gain to the maximum regardless of the VU or LED meters say. This basically means run it up until it feedback and back them off slightly. Now your gains are set and no matter what level you set the faders to you should have a lot less feedback issues and still have all the volume your equipment can handle available without feedback. The clip light helps allot with this. Having said that, you can still have lots of feedback issues with wireless mics and the performer moving about the stage and room. You will need to learn how to deal with that. This method gives you a great no feedback base to start with. Setting gain with the PFL LED method often leaves you no headroom when you need it. It's not a good method for setting gains. It's also not good for much except maybe recording. That's because all you are hearing is the sound threw the board into head phones. This is live sound, you need to hear what's coming out of your mains, monitors and side fills if any. PFL is a tool for your use at best it's not to be relied on as it's not a true representation of the end product. Hope that helps, happy mixing!

My very first job was running the sound board at my church. It was such a pain to get right. The booth was way up in the rafters and to the far left back of house so as to hide it from the attendees. We had no headphones for monitoring up there and I had to use hand signals while leaning half way over the rail of the cramped booth to check with the speakers and performers to make sure everyone could hear what they needed to, and due to the distance to the doors (had to take stairs and a ladder), the interruption it would cause, and the short segments before having to switch mutes on and off; I never had a chance to do a walk to make sure it all sounded good. I was about 16 and had never even used a mixer before that job, but I held it for about a year. A video like this then would have been super helpful but KZbin was not around then. Oh and I had to make a master recording on tape for each sermon that copies could be made of so they could be taken to people that could not get out of their house or were in hospital.
