This seems less about common-core curriculum (or the lack thereof), then it is an indictment of depending on basic scaffolding teaching techniques for an *entire teaching strategy* instead of just using scaffolding for introducing NEW concepts or challenging new skill sets. Scaffolding was mean't to be like "training wheels" ---- An introductory step which is intended to just get students started on some new challenge, and not to be used as a lifelong technique to depend on in normal functioning.

I initially loved this video because it demonstrates what I dislike about the aspect of our current education system that creates what I call the "multiple choice student". That is to say I often encounter students at the college age and beyond who are unable to integrate what they have learned to answer a question-they can only use the process of elimination to rule out unlikely answers in a multiple choice format. But, and this is a HUGE but, the common core does NOT fix this problem. I thought it did when I first saw this video but now that the curriculum is beginning to be adopted, I see it merely levels the playing field. There are definitely some improvements in the approach to learning, that will be implemented with common core, but at the expense of advanced curricula for gifted students in many schools throughout the country. So, now I am going to have to say this video is entertaining but misleading.

This is brilliant, and pretty darn close to the literal truth. Privatization, standardization and test-mania have been having their corrosive effect for over a decade now. And the whole mess is still going strong.

Unfortunately, this video is much too accurate. That's why it's funny. Funny as in OMG. No, it's not the teacher's fault. No, it's not the kid's fault. No, it's not the parent's fault. It's the fault of a ruthlessly subversive Education Establishment. They love mediocrity and educational decline. That's why we have so much of them.

Common Core is not a curriculum. It is a set of standards to live up to. The Hippocratic Oath is also a standard- but it doesn't dictate specifically how doctors should treat.

I understand setting goals encourages achievement but standardization eliminates competition if all teachers have the same courses are kids in Connecticut in need of the same course as kids in Maine? As common core becomes the law of the land will the federal government be responsible for our education on top of everything else we've shirked?

The Common Core was created to address the issues highlighted in the video (a point that seems to have been missed many). Once you screen out the rhetoric from the conspiracy theorists, you will see that the Common Core concept is a vast improvement over previous system.

Hopefully she's going for a job at Pearson, because they're the only ones who will value the non-education kids like her will be getting with the Corporate Core.

Why have we gone from the number one educational system in the world to amongst the bottom of the list? That is the question we should be asking My guess is it has a lot to do with the breakdown of the nuclear family and the changing demographics of this country.

I'm looking for a "like button" for your reply to donjack. You are completely correct! As someone who teaches these kids in college and beyond, I completely support the common core concept. I can also say that this video is sadly representative of what I see on a daily basis.

Common Core is terrible. Sorry, that's just how it is. The less steps there are, the less mistakes you'll make. That's a FACT. Especially when you're talking things like second or third grade. That's the time where you've just got to memorize facts. 1+1, multiplication times tables... You can't possibly try to understand WHY 1+1 is 2, you likely never will. So why bother trying? You've just got to memorize it.

Citation? Public schools have progressively improved (in the US at least). Don't believe all the scare-tactics thrown out by political spin doctors. Read the actual statistics. Standards have steadily risen since the early 70s and our students are steadily rising to meet them. Home schooling is sometimes effective and sometimes not; it varies too much to make a blanket statement about it, and the statistics are unreliable because it hasn't been tracked as fully as public schools.

If i may so boldly assert that the solution to education is simply free-market competition (not regulated in any way, shape, or form). Let the consumer decide: Do they truly value better education ? Or do they require more economical, cheaper alternatives ? Competition is going to increase the quality of the product or service and lower the price!

The thing is, we aren't living decades ago. Our technology and knowledge has changed. We now know more about the brain and how it works. Also, what's wrong with behavior modification, if it can be used to help students better understand how they think and thus become self motivated to learn. Will Common Core fix all of our problems? Probably not, but its a step in the right direction.

Amen Laura! It does kill creative thinking. I drive a 12 passenger van full of kids back and forth from 6th grade through 12th. These kids know that the "Testing"" doesn't affect their grades in any way. I actually heard a conversation between the kids stating that they don't even try! Some of the kids bubble in geometric designs or the like and don't even read the questions on the test. They don't care one darn bit about those tests! the only tests they care about are the 1's that effect them!

You think Common Core is going to cure these ills? It's just allowing the publishers to make gazillions more because they will now have to create NEW tests, NEW test prep materials, NEW "professional development" to get us to teach to the Common Core! I've always maintained that 'Mandated professional development is neither professional nor likely to result in development'. It holds true here, too.
