Thank you for your kind answers! But I can’t still understand that ‘wash over’ works as singular verb because I have known ‘washes over’ as a singular form. I need more explanation about it🙏
@ListenSpeakAcademy64 күн бұрын
Great question! Let’s break it down. In the sentence: 👉 "I feel a sense of accomplishment wash over me." Why is it "wash over" and not "washes over"? "Feel" + Bare Infinitive (Base Verb Form) The verb "feel" is a perception verb (like see, hear, notice, watch, etc.). When we use perception verbs, we can follow them with a bare infinitive (base form of the verb) or -ing form. ✅ I feel something wash over me. (Bare infinitive) ✅ I feel something washing over me. (-ing form, continuous action) 🚫 I feel something washes over me. ❌ (Incorrect) 👉 So, "wash over" is not acting as a normal present simple verb (which would be "washes over"), but as part of a verb structure following "feel." What about "a sense of ~"? "A sense of accomplishment" is singular because "sense" is countable and is modified by "a." Even though "accomplishment" is an uncountable noun, the phrase "a sense of [something]" is singular. Examples: ✅ A sense of pride fills me. (Singular verb because "a sense" is singular.) ✅ I feel a sense of joy wash over me. ("Wash" is in bare infinitive form because of "feel.") Summary "Wash over" is in the bare infinitive because it follows "feel." "A sense of ~" is singular, but it doesn’t affect the verb "wash" in this structure. Hope this clears it up! Let me know if you need more examples. 😊🙏

Question! In this sentence [I feel a sense of accomplishment wash over me] Waht is correct thing? - wash over - washes over And I want to know about ‘a sense of ~’ Is it singluar or multiple?
@ListenSpeakAcademy65 күн бұрын
Great question! "Wash over" vs. "Washes over": "Wash over" is correct here because "a sense of accomplishment" is singular, and in this case, it works as a singular subject. The verb agrees with the subject. "Wash over" works because you're talking about the feeling of accomplishment in a singular form. So, you don’t need to add an extra "s" to the verb in this context. "A sense of ~": "A sense of ~" is singular. "Sense" is singular, so even if it’s followed by something plural (like "accomplishments" or "feelings"), the phrase still remains singular. For example: "A sense of joy," "A sense of wonder," etc., all use "a sense" as a singular subject. So, the correct sentence is: "I feel a sense of accomplishment wash over me."
