Rancatore est incontestablement supérieure à Dessay mais on pourrait dire qu’à vaincre sans péril on triomphe sans gloire. Car, vraiment, la divette made in France fait étalage de tous ses défauts dans un répertoire comme celui-ci. Les couleurs vocales n’y sont pas, non plus que les graves, l’italien est effroyable. Qu’on ne cherche pas dans cette interprétation qui frôle la vulgarité la moindre touche de romantisme, de mystère, de poésie. Dessay a été durant sa brève carrière une fausse valeur qui a séduit les journalistes par son caractère frondeur et décalé. C’est ainsi qu’elle a acquis sa notoriété. Elle n’aura au bout du compte donné le meilleur, ou le moins mauvais, d’elle même que dans quelques opérettes d’Offenbach.

Difficult to judge the interpret through a little piece of the aria and one note. Callas was the best artist of them, even if not the softest timbre.

A lack of elegance is a common theme with weird movements and wriggling for breath support. Sutherland and even Callas at the end tossed off high notes without any seeming physical histrionics.

Y ..hay que agradecerle a María Callas por sacarla del olvido y modernizarla y lograr expresar el genio de Bellini, y gracias al gran Visconti por actualizarla escenicamente. ❤❤❤

Very nice video. Only one is embarrassing the other Lucias are from good to legendary. Personally I crown Natalie Dessay for voice and drama which perfectly fit to this my favorite moment of opera.

Para empezar hay que agradecerle a María Callas el haber resucitado este rol. Sinceramente la Lucia es mucho más que notas altas. Se necesita una voz que caracterize el proceso mental de una mujer que va camino a la locura. Es un personaje que agoniza de principio a fin. All fantastic. I’ve always loved Joan Sutherland but er acting does not compare to Natalie Dessay and Diana Damrau. Different era though. This death scene never fails to take my breath away!…This aria appears at the end of the opera! Where do they get the staying power? I’m sure the collapse at the end in most cases is from sheer vocal and physical exhaustion.

Interessantissimo confronto di grandissime e meno grandi. Devo dire però, che di tutte le edizioni di Lucia con la Callas , credo sia stata scelta quella del 1959 che non è certo la migliore. Comunque grazie sempre e buon lavoro.

For my ears Devia is great for technic but I am not sure how big her voice. Sutherland,I like everything of her in early years is great BUT when she was matured I think her last high note is too short and less power .It is like you have to push a lot to do that note( I never heard her in live performance then I don't know how big of voice she has and I don't like her diction. I really want Caballe sing this song in the right and proper way. I am surely she has Eb in her prime BUT she never done in public,at least in recording. May be she dare not to risk and too less for attempt. Maria Callas..oh ,she might have big voice and did great in many roles but not all roles and not all her longevity career.I think she is not real coloratura and last not is....coarse.(I feel like this ,I don't know why do people always vote her as the best or superhuman). How about Alexandra pendatchanska ?? Is she real dramatic coloratura? Big voice as Sutherland?? And the last one I think she can sing this role quite completely is Edda Moser,but why is so less for her records?
