Video from Sunny Angel #Wings #LoveStartsAtHome #BreakTheSilence #Survivor www.sunny-angel.com #endslavery Speech notes: Thursday 5th October 2017. Nazir Afzal's Guest Survivor Speaker Thank you for this Opportunity - My Name is Sunny Angel I was born in England and I’m British, I’m a Survivor of modern slavery, Grooming and much more. I was groomed, tortured and made into a slave 20 years ago as a teen. I asked for help 20 years ago but the authorities turned me away. The police said it was a 'no crime' as 'it was normal for my lot to abuse in the culture, if you all asked for help there would be chaos at the station' this then led to my failed suicide. The GP said an hour counselling was not enough so nothing was done until years later. My parents answer was a forced arranged marriage where I endured marital rape, abuse and further slavery. I was forced into silence due to culture. I now speak to the many who have felt betrayed, scared and even those who have considered suicide. I hope to reach out to others by sharing my own, true experience. It’s a story about finding the courage that comes with the realisation that you are not alone.. There is no shame in being a victim. Grooming is not just an online phenomenon. It can happen anywhere and at any time, even under the guise of friendship and love. Love must start at home. If children feel special at home then they won’t seek attention from strangers. Grooming can start young and vulnerable children are targets. My advice to parents is to be compassionate and give your children space to talk openly. Sometimes in life, it is hard to see through the fog. So dense, the future seems bleak. That is how victims of abuse and emotional degradation often feel. Breaking free of this feeling may seem impossible. Wings is written from the heart, with no holding back. There is a way out; there is someone who will listen; there is hope; there is no shame. The truth will prevail and there is a future. Wings has the power to enable one to break free of the chains of guilt … chains a victim should never be bound by. I now have butterfly wings tattooed on my back. I had it done to cover up the scars and cigarette burns of my past so that my young daughter would not see them. Now they serve as a symbol of my transformation from being a victim to being a survivor Readings from the book - From Chapter 2 He would ring me on my mobile phone, which Mum now knew about, although Dad still didn’t. Sometimes, I didn’t have it with me because it was hidden in my room. So, he would ring on the landline. If Mum or Dad answered, he would put the phone down. Or he would hang up after two rings and I would go and call him. ‘Why don’t they call the police? That’s what I would do if someone kept calling and putting the phone down. They obviously don’t care about you.’ From Chapter 5 My life descended, literally, into darkness when Khan placed flattened cardboard boxes in front of the bedroom windows and kept the curtains drawn shut. He would lock me in when he went out and turn the electricity off, so I couldn’t switch on the light. A full-size mirror was placed on the window sill, which Khan would take down from time to time to conduct full inspections of the damage he’d inflicted on my body. The bed was moved up against the wall, adding to my sense of imprisonment. I was cold, alone, locked in without heat or light and unable to use the bathroom. Embarrassing to admit, but I wet myself several times. Khan continued to beat me black and blue. He would ring my friends, whose details were in my mobile, and threaten and abuse them, often making me listen. He frightened them all away. He rang Mum, who told him she would do a funeral for me, which is an Indian way of saying I was dead to her. Dilip had a lovely Muslim girlfriend called Mubina, who’d met our family. Khan rang her family trying to stir up trouble for Dilip. He asked why she was going out with a Hindu. And he asked me, not unreasonably, why it was OK for Dilip to go out with a Muslim, but not me. He wondered, ‘What kind of man is your brother? He can’t even look after his sister.’ Dilip told Khan, ‘My sister is dead. I don’t care what you do to her.’ Another time, Khan pushed me to the floor, held me down and rang Dad. He put the phone on loudspeaker so I could hear the receptionist, and then Dad’s voice. Khan asked Dad, ‘Can you hear her? I’ve got your daughter here. I’ve just hit her. Can you hear her? There’s nothing you can do. I’m raping your daughter now. There’s nothing you can do.’ Dad pleaded with Khan, ‘Why don’t you just leave her alone? Please, leave her alone.’ I also begged Khan, ‘Please, please don’t let my dad listen to this, please. I’ll do whatever it is you want me to do. Please don’t hurt my family like this.’ Khan was a chameleon. A violent, sadistic bully. He could appear kind and caring, although this was usually done to suit his purposes, especially in the early days when he was grooming me. I can be contacted on www.sunny-angel.com Thank you for your time. Together we can save many x
