"TP the three wire !" ... I was on that cruise. The Magic was my first ship and my first cat and trap on a C-2. In the Pac I served as a Russian Linguist aboard USS Midway CV-41(2x), USS Reeves CG-24, USS OldenDorf DD-978 (2x), USS Vincennes CG-49, USS Arkansas CGN-41, and USS Francis Hammond FF-1067.

Scott try this video. Great F-16 dogfight at Nellis red flag. Starting at 3:07 he has great timing on when to go vertical to merge with his target and does a great vertical separation roll (high yo-yo) to decrease angle of tail and keep from overshooting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYTPn3SeiN2Djbssi=80_Newt62AYrwcAA

If Iraq actually had competent airforce and AA batteries, the US would have lost the war. Countless times the US got bogged down by Iraqi forces and had to call in airstrikes. Vietnam was a nightmare for the US Airforce when they actually had to fight properly trained farmers in high tech Soviet jets .

I'm reality the first SA2 wasn't launched at Stroke 3, it was fired at another flight leaving the target area above stroke flight. It's on the Fighter Pilots Podcast channel where the Emit Tulias flight lead talks about the ordeal, after ET got back to base the intel ppl went through the tapes and concluded the 20 surface to air missiles where launched that day. On the way out ETs flight lead was hit by frag from a missile and later ejected and was captured. Their target was an oil refinery

The thing that always amazed me about this flight was that it was never rehearsed. Gonzo briefed it and we flew it. During the briefing someone asked about "lost wingman" procedures. Gonzo replied as only Gonzo could, "There are none. We won't be in the weather." Within two minutes of getting the formation together, we entered the clouds and didn't come out until we were at the east end of the airfield boundary. "Gunner" Heltsley was the tower SOF (Supervisor of Flying) when Gonzo checked in for the airfield flyby. Gunner advised Gonzo to make the pass "North to West" to stay out of the clouds. Gonzo advised him "that was too late". The two outriggers were RF-4s from the recce squadron that maintained a detachment at Osan from Kadena AB. Just as the video ends, the RF-4s broke formation when Gonzo asked if we wanted to do it again. I was just behind "lead" with an F-4 on each wing. All I wanted to hear from my WSO was if he had lost sight of my wingmen. That meant they had lost sight of me and things were going to get ugly if that happened in the weather. I have no idea what the final contribution this had on the morale of the base personnel, but when we landed any one of us would have taken on Godzilla and whipped his ass.

Curious, why would they never climb out in this situation? I was surprised to see they stayed under 15k the entire scenario and I would’ve assumed climbing as high as possible to give more time to dodge the Sam is step 1 so just wondering.
@iagree4686
@iagree4686 Ай бұрын
climbing makes the plane lose speed and become less maneuverable and at higher altitudes air is thinner which is better for the missile since it experiences less air resistance

Hearing his voice break “Stroke four STATUS!” gets me every time. Especially when you hear Stroke four’s transmission cut off right before and then hear the observers say “Stroke four hit. NO CHUTE.” Hits me in the gut every time. Stroke four survived by the way. But he didn’t know that. I tear up every time I watch it.

he was too high, guess was dropping some laser guided for buddy lase in CCIP above IR sam range. thing is at that high he cant dodge much. sa2s are intended for bombers so he outmanouvered them in thin air with 6.4G max which wasn't that hard prob cos CAT3 G limit was on so he wasnt even on CAT1 for max G at 9+. I feel most of them sht their pants. in any case being at A16 with CAT3 is very bad idea.
