“That (the size of the circuit) was an illustration of what the problems were at the Nurburgring- it took a long time! As opposed to where we are now, where it is mandatory that you have services within a minute of any incident, this was 5, 6 minutes!” Now, 5 or 6 minutes may not seem like a long time- but in racing and in terms of a response to a racing accident, especially a fiery one like Lauda’s- that amount of time is centuries. 5 to 6 minutes or longer is more than enough time to determine the difference between life and death for a driver who is badly injured in an accident. It’s just really hard to run a series like F1 with such thorough safety criteria at a circuit as huge as the Nurburgring. They needed 5 to 6 times the amount of safety personnel and equipment there for a Grand Prix than you would at any other circuit. They did not have the financial or supplemental means to meet those demands- most of the spectators way out in the rural parts got in for free anyway.

Niki was my hero when I was 11 tears old. I cried at the wheel of my car when I heard on the BBC world service that James had died. These two were true gladiators. F1 has had some greats, but these two rank with the very best and their relationship was deep. About 7 years ago I lived in Sri Lanka opposite the airport hotel and I had a colleague who had his breakfast there everyday. He called me up afterwards and said “thy guy you like was at breakfast”, he didn’t know Niki’s name but said “the guy in the jeans, sweater and red hat”. Turns Niki and a couple of traveling companions overnighted there on the way to Malaysia. Had I got the heads up earlier I could have shot over to at least see him, if not disturb him at all. Would have loved to see him. Hero’s both.

Whether the marshals were "willing" to help in the Purley accident is immaterial. Without proper protection from the fire, there was not a thing they could do. But sure, cast aspersions on their character.

Even though this tv show was the most controversial tv programme in british history because of human's death during a challenge, it had got very catchy intro song.

Yes pre 1983 The caption show all the transmitters in service including 405 line, which included Anglia's very first mast Mendlesham which today is still a regional FM mast for Kiss FM and some DAB stuff. At the time as recorded in the 1962 Gunniss Book of Records Europe's tallest mast at 1003ft. and in 1965 it's relay Belmont became even taller at about 1265ft of the top of my head, it got shortened in about 2011 for digital switchover. Anglia did big. This was a second generation caption as in 1974 the Belmont Transmitter was switched from Anglia to Yorkshire, and to "fill" the gap in North Norfolk new relays were installed at King's Lynn (actually on the Queen's estate at Sandringham), South Creake, Wells and East Runcton near Cromer. So a revised caption was introduced. Ironically most people just kept their aerials pointed at Belmont, or would have two so if you didn't like the film on Yorkshire you could switch to Anglia instead.

Everyday life for the man on the street is probably better now, certainly in terms of living healthier, longer and more prosperous but sport was much better back then. We had characters that would say what they thought and acted like we wanted them to. Like we would if we were in their position. If you're earning millions, have pretty women all over you and would do anything to meet you and have thousands of fans all chanting for you, you're not going to go to bed at 10pm with a cup of horlicks are you?? Ok you probably would on the days of a race weekend if you were an F1 driver, but otherwise you wouldn't.

Heck I only recently watched 'Rush' and honestly I didn't think the incident would be that horrible and what we got on-screen was exaggerated by Hollywood magic but man was it accurate. Gotta commend Niki for still being able to even get in an F1 again after a traumatizing experience like that mad respect

Same colour as mine though mine was a year later. Loved it! Really neat cars - they pulled like a train in direct top and you hardly ever needed third to overtake. Very precise steering though they had handling problems at the limit.
