Killer chat. Been working on the book the last few weeks and this has really helped me understand some things. Those points about practicing basics is key. Melodic minor scales in 3rds is an absolute killer... Going through the "hard" keys in particular has already had a big impact on my playing.

Super interesting talk guys, thank you so much for all the effort and dedication in putting this book together! I'm sure this will be on tons of people's stands, it surely will be on mine. It's as interesting to see what he practiced - the logged lines - as the system he used to practice, like what you all discussed and was neatly explained by Rick. It provides an extra insight into looking at solo transcription of Mike as well. Thanks again!

pretty much the same sound on all mouthpieces. As Dave Liebman aptly puts it, when out of your throat, the sound is already 80% shaped...then reed mouthpiece, neck and sax make up for the difference.

@@benbrittonjazz I should add that the audio via you tube flattens quite a bit the sound spectrum. I use an app : Ntrack that gives the actual spectrum of a musical instrument with all harmoni components. A physical measure rather than a qualitative/descriptive one. As an example my late Buescher 400 has evident harmonics in the lower range and this is not only a sensartion when listening: it has a warmer/darker sound than other vintage instruments I own.

Thanks, Ben. I got mine with the rolled tone holes, described by the sales guy as "a demo model from a recent show". It was grossly defective, with some kind of glue or lacquer on the pads, to the extent that I could not pull the pads off of the tone holes...and some of the pads actually tore from the pressure. However, I sent it back, and Randy ended up by replacing the entire sax minus the neck. I then had some mild g sharp and bis key sticking problems, but they resolved with constant playing and care. After playing it for about three months, I began to realize that it is a really great horn...and I play it now in the big band at Tenor I. I use a Vandoren 7 mp and a #3 Fibracell reed. I do not play at your level, but I do realize that the sound I get is very similar to yours, which is excellent. Randy also restored my 12 year old Yanagisawa T991, and he did such a great job that the Yanni plays better than it did out of the box, and it played remarkably well out of the box. In order to justify having purchased the TM, I asked Randy to put the metal resonators on the Yanni, and I am glad I did, because the Yanni is a great "funk, rock, modern jazz, etc. horn, and it projects well. So, I now have two non Selmer horns that I am completely ecstatic to own and play. You are so right about the intonation and how it plays. If I were in your area, I would be enrolling in your classes, man.

@@benbrittonjazz Hi Ben- enjoy your videos and interesting to read that you are now playing the TM session tenor. I am really intrigued by this sax especially as there are no reviews or sound samples online that I can find! Clearly you enjoy it though. @@jamesadams8022 Hey James, thanks. :) The TM Session is great. It's got some pop/focus to the sound and a really comfortable resistance. I think there are some clips of Simon at TM playing the session someplace. There's a little bit of me playing it on a quick preview of my group, Sound Expression. I've been thinking about doing a review of the session tenor. I'm actually headed to TM this summer, so maybe I'll do a comparison video with some horns while I'm there. Anyways, the horn is great, and I'd definitely recommend it.

These all sound "stuffy" to my ear, and I don't really enjoy the sound nearly as much as the warm musical tones of the vintage open-chamber mouthpieces. Presently, my favorite contemporary remake is the tenor Caravan. I have original Martin "no-names" which I find to be exceptionally pleasant.
