lol at capping of the ground with a wire nut. It's bare copper; what purpose could that possibly serve?
@asciilogic3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Out of all the instructional videos - this one made sense and worked 3-way setup. On the old light switch base - the word “common” is stamped into the plastic base next to the screw. This is how i was able to identify which wire was common wire. Connected common wire to one of the black Caseta dimmer wires and capped with wire cap. The other two wires from my wall, I connected to other dimmer black wire - capping all three with a wire cap. I have no ground wire in my wall - so I capped the ground on dimmer. Following instructions after that was a breeze.

Is that Ellen DeGeneres narrating?

Agreed. The way the narrator pronounces "er" sounds like Ellen. Super annoying.

I have 4 wires in my box - two black, one vare and one red. When the power is on, only ONE black wire shows current. the other black wire has no current and the red wire has no current. So...... what;s up with that?
@AlonCunningham3 жыл бұрын
you could have a short in those other wires, check those wires at your other 3-wy switch to see if they have a current going through them. When was your house built?

Do you need to use the pico remote at the other location or can I use the caseta in wall switch? The documentation says you can use a normal mechanical switch but it makes no mention of the caseta in wall switch. I would rather use the switch so all my switches look the same (which they would not if I left the old one) and there is no need to worry about an eventual battery change (which I would with the remote). I honestly don’t see why it would be a problem and I can’t find anything that says one way or the other.

I wish they would have responded. I wired my with one smart switch and left the other the same. I actually put the traveler and load on the same wire in doing this. Works fine for me.

I did exactly as the video instructed and my living room lights work perfectly with the Pico and the in wall dimmer switch. House was wired by a reputable electrician in my area and the house was built 4 years ago in 2013. I think being wired right and labeled correctly by the electrician made a huge difference for me.

Is this a "Touch" off/on type dimmer?

This just doesn't work. Same problem as posted here forums.lutron.com/showthread.php/1208-Caseta-dimmer-intall-problem but it looks like the community/forum isn't strong. With the breaker in the basement and the 3 way switches on 3rd floor, got over 1 hr and 45 flights of stairs in this failed install. Lights stay on, and there are no green led's on switch and buttons do nothing. Grrrrrrrrr

I wired up 2 of these in my house and whenever I use the common/traveller wire the light stays on all of the time. I ended up capping off the that wire on both ends and it worked like a champ. I have an old house from the 1920's so that may be part of the issue.
@stevenburnett29786 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue in a house built in 2000. The tell tale sign that I had run into the issue was that after bundling all of the wires as instructed here, the remaining switch was on in both positions. If I could have gone back in time I would have saved myself a bit of time by knowing this.

Must I mount a companion remote at the second switch location or can I leave it? Also, capping both the common and hot wires together at that location seems questionable to me, but I'm no electrician!

kristine isabelle what did you find out? I have the same question.

I did as the instructions indicated as follows. Installed the Dimmer at the room entry switch and a companion remote at the far end (with leads coupled in that switchbox and no surprises) - where two more rooms are accessed. I simply disabled the third switch location altogether since it's at the slider door entryway and never used. I Created a holder for my dimmer remote right in my home theater dual chaise and set the dimming preset for perfect theater viewing conditions! The only surprise I had was with my LED bulbs, when turned off they evidently still burn ever so slightly, hardly noticeable but just enough to see in total darkness. I've since found out this is not unusual with dimmable LED bulbs and a dimmer setup. A very affordable solution, I purchased everything at my local Home Depot.

Hello, the reason for capping the wires together is because by doing this, we are making the caseta switch act as a single pole switch. Think of it this way, in the first switch box on the video, they cap travelers and load(black wire for light fixture) wires together for them to act as one same conductor. In the second switch box on the video the travelers are cap together and connected to the switch, then the other conductor (black/hot wire) coming from your panel connects separately to the switch as well. Hope this helps

After capping the ground wire and capping off the three wires for the first switch in the video - can you mount the wireless unit a few feet away from te original switch box instead of putting it back in the same box?
@tawpruitt7 жыл бұрын
Yes. You can take the pico with you in your car if you wanted and use it when you pull up to the house. You can literally put it ANYWHERE! :)
