"The Mercury Monarch was meticulously designed and made for the car-buyer, who under no circumstances, whatsoever in any possible conceivable scenario, that anyone would dare imagine in their wildest dreams, would just assume rather be caught dead in, even if they got for free, let alone pay for, a Ford Granada."

One of the most enduring, beautiful, and memorable designs of the 1970s. The Continental Mark IV outsold the Cadillac Eldorado in those years. The Mark IV offered so many more color selections in interior personalization way more than what the Eldorado could offer. The Mark IV could still be ordered with full dual exhausts for the standard 460cid V8 with more horsepower than the Eldorado's 500cid V8 But that said, give me any luxury car from the 1960s or 1970s over anything built today! These were truly the golden decades for true, unique American Luxury. My uncle's sold Lincoln-Mercury's in those days. The family drove many, many of these fabulous automobiles. For the pinnacle of comfort and travel, the cars to have were the fabulous Lincoln's, Cadillac's, Imperial's, Oldsmobile 98's, Toronado's, Riviera's, Marquis', etc. We will never be able to walk into a new dealer showroom anymore to buy beautiful automobiles like these ever again. We must preserve these gorgeous automotive icons of the past. I am forever blessed that I grew up around and had the pleasure of driving and owning these wonderful cars.

I think the Mercury version looked far better and more refined elegant than the Ford Granada. The Granada grille was just "too busy". The Monarch definitely had the better-designed hood ornament. No thought at all went into that Granada hood ornament. But on both, the rear end design fell well short of being stylish or memorable. The rear design of both cars looked old and dated even brand new. I wonder how many people realized that these cars were just reskinned Comets and Mavericks still being sold? EXACT 109" WB platform that actually came from the 1960 Ford Falcon. Which also gave us the original 1965 Mustang. Also brought us the 109" WB, $12,000.00 Lincoln Versailles. My great uncle's sold the Monarch and Versailles. They did not dare put a Monarch and Versailles together in the showroom. No one could justify the price of two Monarchs for the price of one Versailles I had the opportunity to drive both the Monarch and Versailles. They both drove and rode far better than any Comet they were based upon. However, the Versailles was far superior to the Monarch in engineering and build quality.

I am so blessed to have grown up and became an adult in the era when these fabulous luxury cruisers ruled the boulevards of America. My great uncle's sold Lincolns, Continental's, Oldsmobiles, and Cadillacs. Our entire family bought Town Cars, Marquis', Mark IV's, V's, VI's, 88's, 98's, Sedan de Villes, Eldorado's, etc. It was a dream come true growing up, driving, and owning these beautiful motoring machines. In spite of what you hear about the '70's "fuel crisis", it sure did not affect my uncle's ability to sell every last one of these large luxurious cars. Most of the time, they even ran out of demonstrators because they sold so many. This was TRUE AMERICAN LUXURY. Whether it be a Delta 88 Royale, or a Lincoln Mark V, nothing, NO car, gave you the ride, feel, or drive that these automobiles would. Cars you could curl up in back and sleep serenely on long turnpike trips cruising at 80mph in sheer silence and pillowed comfort. American car manufacturers have forgotten how to build truly luxurious cars that offer the size and ride these cars offered. If they can build large, heavier, 4-door pickups that achieve 25 mpg, they could still build true luxury cars.

I am ever so thankful that I was born in 1961 and came of driving age when these cars ruled the boulevards and freeways. Mercury Marquis' of this era are highly sought after. They are essentially a $11,000.00 Lincoln Continental platform of 124" wheelbase, at a very reasonable Mercury price of around $7,000.00, fully loaded, top-line, Grand Marquis. My uncle's sold them for years here in Dallas. They could not keep them on the lot long enough to usually have a demonstrator model available. They sold many Continental Mark IV's and many Marquis. Everyone in our family drove either Mercury's, Continental's, Oldsmobiles, or Cadillacs. Because that is what the family sold in the car business. I was blessed to be able to enjoy these wonderful, traditional, AMERICAN, luxury cars of this great era - 1972 through 1979. If you have never driven or owned one of these fabulous automobiles, I strongly urge you to seek them out and discover what true, AMERICAN, luxury motoring was all about. These cars will never be forgotten by those of us who drove and owned them. Today, these cars sell for more than their original price in the 1970s.
