Hi there, I tend to use Bonsai jack conifer mix (pumice/pine bark/baked clay/charcoal) at around 75% plus a 25% of pure pine bark - I find they like the extra moisture it provides.

Great video, thanks. You're not the first person who I've heard mention dieback on Amur maples. I haven't experienced dieback, but I've found that after I do that first early summer prune, I usually don't get a second flush. Also, I've got fungal infections on my Amur leaves the last couple growing seasons. So yeah, I have mixed feelings about amurs.
@GreatLakesBonsai5 ай бұрын
Totally on the same page with your pruning experience. They are cool little trees but kinda goes to your point on your native trees video :)

@@GreatLakesBonsai absolutely. I’m still working on my bonsai patience. Better to reduce it in stages. 👍🏻

I personally would have done some initial material removal with the bit then pulled some fibers to keep a more naturalistic look but I get what you were looking to achieve with adding some curvature. Finding the tree in the tree is exactly how I describe bonsai. I’m a shohin nut. The tree has some great potential and it sounds like you have a solid plan for it going forward.
@GreatLakesBonsai5 ай бұрын
Appreciate the feedback, you’re right that it’s a bit crude! I will be pulling some of those fibers this weekend and likely sanding the top to smooth out the tool marks, didn’t have time for it on the video… yes, tree within the tree had got to be where your eye is in reducing material over time for sure. Have you done any shohin displays yet? Mark Fields is one of the best around here regionally, always has great shohin. Thanks for taking the time to watch/comment
@wreagin15 ай бұрын

Your videos are just amazing, so much information. thank you. how do you root graft?
@GreatLakesBonsai10 ай бұрын
Thanks much Gordon - I kinda showed it in the Dawn redwood video. I need to document the process step by step. Basically you position a seedling with its root system alongside the base of the tree you’re trying to graft to, cut a slit in the main tree trunk, and wedge the seedling in. Then once merged, chop the trunk off the seedling and you have its root system connected to the main tree.
