These essays and statements of purpose, intent, etc, are a legal tool that universities can use to protect themselves in the event if a lawsuit. "But she BEGGED US to let her matriculation! WE DID NOTHING WRONG!" FYI, from KZbin videos where admissions committee members tell us what they look for, they admit they merely glance at the statement of purpose, that it's not a big deal.

Transcript: To motivate the speech team, our coach says your state tournament may not happen in Peoria. How is that possible? Isn't the state always in Peoria? From the moment I was assigned the event, Radio Speaking, as a freshman, to the final round at sectionals three years later, I had learned to explore my voice-fitting its every element to a multitude of roles, from presidential election reporter to sports broadcaster. Entering the sectional final, I cleansed my mind of any frustration because I knew the past two years of missing state had only strengthened my resolve. At the beep of my stopwatch, adrenaline pumped through my veins, and my words created a unique array of storytelling. The week's news came alive as the timer clicked down to the perfect five minutes. I channeled the euphoria I felt since my very first tournament and applied every element of tone, diction, and vitality I had polished. Then the news came: I had missed state by one place. As I reflected on the previous year's near misses, my mind slipped out of reality, and a familiar yet foreign sensation of numbness loomed over me. Critiques snaked through my mind. Surely, I'd had one too many stumbles or breathed too heavily. The reality was worse: the microphone hadn't fully picked up my voice. A technical issue had left my vibrant performance confined to the broadcast room-not projected to the people who mattered. My mind was trapped in a carnival house of mirrors, and everywhere I searched for meaning, my distorted reflections stared back. As I struggled to peel my baggy eyes from the critique sheets, my dad shared a lesson from his meditation journey, a journey I had previously disregarded because I wasn't some 50-year-old experiencing a midlife crisis. He said, "Emily, when you're disappointed in an outcome from something you're passionate about, don't detach from the activity-only from the result that is out of your control." Suddenly, my coach's insight and dad's advice began to make sense. Isn't it stupid to let one missed opportunity strip away the reward of performing? After all, I had succeeded in final rounds throughout my junior speech season and felt my energy radiate through my words and spirit. I stood at a crossroads. Should I wallow in a singular defeat or appreciate the many successes achieved through my involvement in speech? I had previously visualized success as linear, but in this moment of reflection, that line transformed into a scatter plot of experiences. Memories flashed before my eyes-standing in front of a judge and six competitors hundreds of times had enabled me to calm my heart rate when playing a cello solo for an entire arena. Preparing my radio scripts under time limitations had translated to words flowing effortlessly during a grueling economic question session at the New York Fed Nationals. Performing my speeches passionately had inspired me to represent our community law firm in a presentation to donors. Treasuring the love of my teammates who nicknamed me "Radio Rebel" has filled me with empathy and compassion to patiently teach my young cello students. These moments in time, made possible by my participation in speech, have formed my core essence. I had been programmed to believe that hard work mattered only when it led directly to success, so I needed to search outside the typical sequence for closure. My journey can be a story without having a beginning, middle, and desirable ending. Meaning is in every moment, and cherishing the glow from within is its own reward in an ever-evolving story. As I enter my senior year, I've come to accept my state tournament may not happen in Peoria. Competing at state isn't necessary to appreciate the multitude of experiences speech has prepared me for in life. That said, I do hope the saying is actually, "Fourth time's the charm."

Hello! I recently got admitted into UChicago with a full ride! Ive been watching your videos and have loved your content, however i do have a question regarding the dorms! Im not sure which dorms to chose as an incoming freshman. As of now my top choices are north and max p. I really love the way south is set up however im not sure how far it would be to commute to classes as an incoming neuroscience major. If you can find the time to aid my curiosity that would be greatly appreciated!

@@leylacampos2162 Hi! May I ask how does your application process goes? From the stats, extracurriculars, to your essays?
@lcc__
@lcc__ Жыл бұрын
@@memaacc This year there were two essays both roughly about 500 words about yourself, but of course those prompts are the hardest to answer. Theres a whole bunch of short answers ranging from 200-300 words to one sentence. I cant remember exactly how many there were, probably around 9-12. Then theres a financial aid page that you fill out based on your parents income. Ummm theres a coursework page as well as a requirement for letters of rec. if you get to the finalist stage they will ask you to rank up to 15 universities from a select pool of ≈40 partnership universities and that in itself requires an application made to that specific school. Not as lengthy as the common app, depending the school you choose to apply. However they do require their own essays and short answers separate from the questbridge application. Think of the university application as a supplemental and the questbridge application as its version of the common app. I would say the questbridge app took me around 2 months to complete. After i was chosen for the finalist stage in November i was given three weeks to complete individual apps to the schools i ranked (which were 8) this took me almost all three weeks but I didn’t rank all 15 schools. Some people had it real hard because they themselves ranked 15 schools but did not manage their time so make sure not to make that mistake. Feel free to comment more questions!~~

As long as it fits on 2 pgs (single-spaced) it should be good!! The recommended word count is less than that though (500 words), so don't feel like you need to add more if it isn't necessary for your essay :)

@EmilyDow
@EmilyDow 2 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from, but to be honest it makes a very unsubstantial difference in how colleges assess applicants and is fair to offer if it helps people even marginally, as it may have in my case
@ttown918
@ttown918 2 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyDow I recognize that GPA and test scores are primarily threshold (or gating) criteria for consideration at top 20 colleges. Nevertheless, in general, without a top notch GPA and test score, most applicants will be discarded right off the bat. So, it is important. As to superscoring, the best measure is what a test taker can do in one sitting; preferably, taking the test one time. Regardless, let's be real. Superscoring is used by these elite schools pimarily as a way to boost the reported range of applicant (and admittee) scores reported (to the world) in order to keep up with other like schools in rankings. When the first school started doing this (whoever that was) it put pressure on others to follow suit. Heaven forbid Yale's median 50% of scores has a range 30 SAT points lower than Princeton, etc.
