36:36 Judy’s actress was a teenager. That’s pretty rude. But yeah, I don’t know if it is clear enough to say it’s transphobic or not, and I don’t think it’s homophobic at all. But whatever. Although, I feel it is a bit more complicated than “just let people who they want to be” but I completely agree if that makes sense.

Fun Podcast and nicely done! I agree with most of your takes and it was a lot of fun listening to you guys while I wrapped up my work day this afternoon. A few friendly disagreements: 1. I like the pie scene because it shows how cocky and ridiculous the bikers were. They had been surviving out there for so long, and presumably have fought off so many zombies that they don't even take them seriously anymore. They're just having fun with them. In other words it shows that A) their attitude to the whole situation that these things aren't even that dangerous and B) that their capability actually matches their attitude - they have such a handle on the zombies that they can treat them as clownish punching bags to beat on. It primes us to realize these people are a serious threat to our protagonists. (Now things do go awry for them once they start getting shot at, but that's another story...) 2. I don't think the housing project raid scene shows that the police should be categorized as bad guys all killing people mercilessly. I think it's showing that A) the cities are total chaos and B) even the police - perhaps the authorities in general - are not holding it together and are starting to lose control over the situation. Just the one single guy out of many - Wooley - was outright racist and murderous, though. He is one of a few indicators that the police were losing control, along with the fact that someone else had to put him down, the officer who committed suicide, and Peter and Roger who obviously said F this and took off. What I DON'T like in the movie is when the tide of the biker battle turned, and the zombies were eviscerating the bikers one by one, one of those bikers decided to take his blood pressure. I just could never figure that one out, hah. I know that Romero said somebody (I forget who - perhaps the blood-pressure-guy actor himself, Tony Buba) thought it would be a fun idea to see the blood pressure go down to 0 as the arm was torn off. But it's like they forgot to even attempt to integrate that stunt into the overall scene in any sensible manner. :) So I'm always just left scratching my head at that one. I'm also not to keen on how so much of the zombie makeup is often so rough; such as the blue/gray makeup being on their face but you can tell it has come off around their eyes, nose, lips, and on their hands. And in some of the bites/gore scenes you see flesh colored latex chunks, or intestines, without even any blood for a moment, heh. I'm happy to overlook these things for such an overall awesome movie though. 4.9 for me. 😁

Absolutely love your insights! We love your input! 1) Totally agree that, while at first glance the pie scene is totally ridiculous and feels to come out of nowhere, it does give a great indication of the bikers attitudes toward the situation they/the rest of the world is in. And who doesn't love pie! 2) Wooley is definitely a bad guy (or at least taking advantage of the state of the world) to mercilessly kill anything that moves in the building. The other cops do stop him eventually and as you said, Roger and the cop that kills himself abandon their posts. We probably shouldn't have called them all bad guys, just people put in an unearthly situation reacting in a no so good way. 3) Really wish they could have executed that blood pressure bit! That would have made the randomness of the guy check it totally worth it! Thanks again for you thoughts and keep em coming! We love to hear from you! Note: I actually do recall Stephen King saying that he had a nightmare about this character -- 'I'm your number one fan' bit. It might have been the one where he was at an airport and wrote a lot of it down there and then, but that might have been something else. Cannot keep all the stories straight in my head with him, since he wrote so many books, haha. Either way, I know for a fact this was a kind of 'open letter' to crazy fans, and clearly his own struggle at the time in terms of his mega-fame. Being artistic (possibly on drugs at the time (?)), his waking mind is much more in-tune to his subconscious than most of us, and he had the hard work to pay attention to it. Clearly, that fear came knocking, and he ran with it. As I said on Reddit, thank God he got a doctor to help him with the actual psychology of it all, though. If he had done this all by himself, it would have been a bit of a mess, I think. But, that fundamental idea of a fan being over your bed as you wake up, saying, 'I'm your number one fan' is the genius part. (Interestingly, Kathy played this part so well, and was fairly unknown at the time, that she got abused on the streets, because people sort of identified her with her character. That is horrible, and I hate to see it happen, but you can understand how people might see things that way. She did a perfect bloody job!) And, I'll just leave some other possible podcast/movie ideas for you here... (1) Shutter Island (2010) (2) A.I. (2001) *Not really a horror movie, so not sure if you can include it onto your podcast or not, but it's a thriller sci-fi piece, and I think highly underrated and deep. It was started by Kubrick himself before he died, and handed over to Steven. (3) The Crow (1994) *I had to include this. Almost perfect, frame-by-frame, for me. May or may not be what you like, though. I'd say it's a 'technical horror', since it's not actually scary. (4) Aliens (1986) *Might give you something to talk about. Everybody focuses on the first one, but I actually think this is a bit better. Very interesting setting, and plays nicely to her in a motherly role looking after the girl, as opposed to being some kind of (masculine) hero. I rate this one above the first, as a result (though the first is shot better). (5) Slender Man (2018) *Only rated 3.2/10 on IMDb, which makes it very underrated for me. Painfully average movie, yes -- but interesting concept, and gives you something to tap into around the whole 'slender man' thing with teenage girls. I remember some reports of girls killing each other out of fear from the video game of this. And, it taps into the deeper realm of a teenage girl wanting a 'strong man to take her away'. There are better examples of it than this (also on TV not just movies), but might as well go direct to Slender Man, in this case. The movie itself was decently made. But, you might want to do some research before putting 1 hour on-air for this, because it requires some serious thinking about the teenage girl and modernity. Something to keep in mind, I guess. (6) The Omen (1976) *Following that, thought it be interesting to add something about the teenage boy. Only can go in a few directions here. I'll stick with the classic, 'evil boy'. A slightly overrated movie, I think -- but still good, and deep theme. (7) The Boy (2016) *And, just to add a different note to that, and a film I actually think is really good. I think this is seriously underrated for modern horror, honestly. I also just love these sorts of movies at the level of concept and execution. (8) Annabelle (2014) *Why not give you a female doll, then. Everybody hates this one, but I actually really like it. I thought it was shot and filmed well, and has solid archetypes/themes going on with the family/mother. Honestly, the fact everybody hates this and thinks the mother was too 'scream-y and weak' speaks volumes to how hopeless the modern viewer has become. Only in your dreams is there a woman who would be ready to fight a ghost-demon like it's no problem. That's just not how the world works, and it's much better horror if the woman is actually helpless and scared. If she's strong and ready to fight, then there is no tension, and it's boring. For these reasons, I actually highly rate this movie! (9) Magic (1978) *Really classic doll type horror movie here. This one needs more love, I feel like. Not sure if it's the original of this type or not, but it's a pretty early one. I guess this is more thriller than horror (not seen it for many years, so I cannot remember the genre really). (10) Hide and Seek (2005) *I found this gem not long ago. Great cast choice, and awesome story/plot. Well-made, overall -- and it even offers like 4 different endings, which give slightly different feelings/viewpoints to the whole narrative. (11) Dead Silence (2007) *Honestly, this is just a good bloody movie, at all levels. (12) Dog Soldiers (2002) *Let's see what you think about this chestnut, of a fairly small budget (2 million). It's quite unknown in America. (13) Sunshine (2007) *Another British gem. Very interesting concept. Well-made. (14) Stranded (2013) *Very underrated recent horror movie, I'd say. Not perfect, but interesting concept, decent cast, and well-made for just 2 million! I won't spoil it. You just have to watch it if you have not already. (If I may try and lend some extra insight, this also has the common motif of the woman giving birth to the evil male. Notably seen in Elm Street series, but also Friday the 13th. No accident that the bad guy in this is snake-like and a shape-shifter, either. Very common tropes, as seen in Aliens itself -- big female snake-like monster. Symbolically and psychologically, this is known as the 'female dragon of chaos', seen in old Middle Eastern mythology, but also clearly Garden of Eden with the Serpent. Connections here also the strange beauty about it, and its ability to turn you to stone/paralyse you, like certain monsters can. Female snake in Harry Potter 2 has this going for it, and the same is true for White Witch in Narnia, and Medusa from Greek mythos, etc. Common view here is 'harshly beautiful, judgemental female turns the world to stone through supreme judgement'. Basic psychology here, as every male knows: beautiful women do turn men to stone. We struggle to even go near them. Most women struggle to understand this sexual power they have, as men are the targets of it, naturally. Tying into the wider archetype of the 'great mother' says Neumann, along with being the negative side of the classic 'mother nature' notion: both creator and destroyer. Not unrelated to the likes of the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland and Ursula from The Little Mermaid. I know, I referenced quite a few things here, but that's how the deeper understanding of film works -- it's a vast, multi-layered web, annoyingly. But, make no mistake, J.K. Rowling knew what she was doing when she made those snakes. She understood the symbolism and psychology perfectly from her deep study of history and mythology. Horror is no different. Actually, horror is where you tend to find such on full display. Twilight is a painfully clear example, for certain archetypes and motifs: it's literally about an average girl winning the love of two, opposing, ideal males -- vampire and werewolf. Of course, that story is not made for me and I don't rate the books much, but the movies are decent, and she really got her story down; hence, it's massively popular with younger women. But, I digress.)

Came here for answers, got laughs. I thought the movie had a lot of promise. I , like you guys, loved that shot in the beginning of him on the phone. I'd love to see that in a better movie. I also thought hm and avery had amazing chemistry, just insanely great. If this was a romantic comedy about them i'd watch it. But then the house thing happened and like everyone i have no idea what was going on. The dragged on ending just hurt the movie even more. If he burns the house down and it ends, it could be salvaged and decent, but the pushed out runtime was horrendous.

Great summary and commentary guys. A little more context for the phone conversation that the dad had with the analyst on the phone. They were involved in a stock pump-n-dump scheme with the bio-tech company that was responsible for the chemical spill at the beginning of the movie. The company was about to go bankrupt and the dad came up with a scheme to buy the company's stock and drive up the price only to dump it later for a fortune. Because they bought the stock, it saved the company from going under and they could continue to develop whatever it was that caused all of this. Neither the analyst nor the dad knew what the company was doing, and they certainly didn't expect the zombie breakout to happen of course. That's why the scene of him losing it in the train bathroom was important because that is when he put the pieces together of his involvement and the washing the "blood on his hands" scene.

@@thedeadlightspod Yes, there were many unnecessary things that only confuse the viewer, like at the end the shout of "Cut!". Also in my opinion Avery and his brother already had everything planned from the beginning because Phillip was waiting for them by the bar. How did Phillip know they would be there? I think that Avery fell in love with Max, something that was not in the plan of Avery and Phillip, but that didn't matter because they continued with their plan anyway. Still I enjoyed the movie. That's a great point and in the end, they were planning to feed the house people and children no matter who it was (so fuck them). But thank you for watching and commenting. We love to hear your thoughts!

9:50 What is the name of the dad's doomed friend that died on the way to the prom? Frank! Frankie Feedler. In the movie theater, Donnie ask the Bunny Frank what kind of name is Frank? Frank says "It is the name of my father and his father before him".

I'm a little behind. I haven't seen every movie you've covered this month, but there's a long run of movies I have seen. A few years ago, there was this trend of people saying the tremors movies were undeniable classics. I watched this to see how much of this was irony and how much was sincere. Honestly I think it's a pretty solid movie. Kevin Bacon's very watchable. Like you guys said, good puzzle solving.

"Undeniable classic" seems a little strong, but hey, I'm sure it is for many...we had such a great time watching it though. I think we can safely say it's undeniably fun!

It's a condemnation of humanity's relationship with nature. Especially when done in the name of so called "entertainment." Animal abuse is no joke. It took me a second watch for the Gordy subplot to fully tie together with the alien stuff. Striving to get the "perfect shot" of the alien is no different from putting together a shlockley sitcom around a chimpanzee. Something primal is triggered in Gordy when those balloons appear. Some evolutionary instinct? Funny that the alien somewhat resembles a balloon. Jupe has processed this traumatic childhood experience through entertainment. When recounting the story, he tells the SNL version of events. Can't blame him. It's probably too traumatic to remember the real version of the story. So he's using the comedic skit as a coping technic and rewritten history. There's something tragic about the moment the alien dies. It's just a wild, beautiful creature that shouldn't have gotten mixed up in human affairs. We never get to know it's whole story. Where did it come from? Its design leaves it intentionally ambiguous as to whether it's a living creature, or if it's man-made. Angel rattles off several theories early in the movie. One I like is that humans from the future send back an A.I. to stop present humans from destroying the planet. I think it's intentional that this character is named "Angel." Peele wants us to keep in mind Old Testament depictions of angels, which are very different from the winged babies renaissance painted created. Actual angels were far more horrifying, and had way more eyes. Older civilizations would have no other language to describe a creature from outer space. The fully unfurled alien is beautiful and angelic. Holst the cinematographer is one who has respect for this creature. He sees film-making as an artform, and knows humanity doesn't deserve something this great. In his reel of nature photography, included is a shot of an octopus fighting another creature. Check out the Indonesian mimic octopus, something that may have inspired the alien in this movie. It's easily a 5/5 from me too. Such a great film that just gets better the more you think about it. - Ken C
