Friend of Howland's since pre- and during college. Used to mix his band Chuck Taylor and the Allstars, and he'd put me up during NAMM shows back pre Chicago/Rick Springfield, etc. Nice Job on this track! Not too many singers wanna touch this one! My most recent band was a cover band of primarily prog-rock stuff as I love YES and bands of that ilk: kzbin.info/aero/PLTlypR8pmUnPw-LuMWVBbhjBaTUZuA_UX

After listening to this song once again this morning I came here just to see what the drummer would look like playing this live, as I think this is one of Phil Collins more underrated drum tracks, and I wasn't disappointed, this was a kick ass performance, and I can now see why Genesis probably never performed this song live, and thats because it would probably be too hard for Phil Collins to do all of that kick ass drumming and sing this song at the same time, and although he does that on other songs, apparently they never did this one live. I saw the "Mama Tour" as they called it in 1984 in Norman, OK, and I was 14 at the time, my one and only time to ever see Genesis, and luckily it was in their heyday, but I don't remember if they did this song, but it was obviously a great show and I still have my tour program 40 years later. I am sad that they are done with music due to Phil Collins poor health and he is just a shadow of his former self, but he gave the world so much great music in the 80's, so he is entitled to a long rest now and to be able to look back on a great career. I can see that there is lots of Hi-Hat work in this song and thats what gives this song that quick energy feeling. Also the fills are kick ass too because that pace never seems to diminish during the fills, I would imagine that the drummer has to be very good to do this song and has his hands very full the whole time.

JC: what makes this work is the balance between respecting the original material without being a slave to it. Or, on the other hand, the remaking (and, supposedly improving and outsinging!) the original. In it all winds up crashing down. Here, there is a lot that is distinct and fresh...just by virtue of the fact that you, specifically, are singing it and in full heart. Agree? Fair assessment? It's the right balance. And that's all you need. To me, this is a technically, creatively, and sonically successful cover. Not an easy thing to do. And a great post-Chicago reintroduction of your solo work.
