I visit a tourist area on a lake where I grew up whenever I can. I hope someday to play well enough to go up there and play and not be asked to politely leave, at least for a while. My area is in weirs beach new Hampshire in the USA. It just recharges my soul. When I go it's like leaving home.

Sounds beautfiul! I find for me performance has a lot to do with my own psychology, maybe more so than how much I practice... Maybe a mix.. Playing with Confidence is the goal for me... some confidence comes from practice, some confidence can only come from mindset and psychology... Many fantastic musicians, don't practice, and don't perform (sometimes this happens to me to, but I am more aware of it now) from things like; perfectionism, imposter syndrome, and fixed mindset... I'd love to hear you play!

I've seen your videos, nice graphics. Can I ask a dumb question. What does Fret is Lava mean and what is the game?
@makemusichere
@makemusichere 18 күн бұрын
Thanks for your question Frank! The Lava Game is a way to categorize notes that harmonize and also how notes tend to want to move from tension (less in harmony) to resolved sounds (more in harmony). It's a metaphor or analogy to symbolize and simplify, make more practical, the use of advanced music theory. Color coding helps us conceptualize the patterns and classify a spectrum of the in to out of harmony sounds. I call the red and orange LAVA 🔥notes tense, sometimes known as passing notes or avoid notes sometimes. The green color tones are the neighbor tones that tend to sound more in harmony, often 2 frets away from a chord tone/note. The Blue colors are the frets/note/tones that are found in a chord.

It's been helpful for me and my students to compose, improvise, make guitar solos, and understand advanced music theory concepts in ways that are practical and useful, moving theory into applicable real world music making scenarios. I've been surprised at how quickly it helps map out the fretboard in a musically applicable way. It becomes less of theory, for theory sake, and more theory that really help musicians write songs for songwriting, improvising, analysis, jamming, making solos, and a lot... It's helped make pattern recognition much more accessible, in my experience anyways. I am really excited to share it, as I've seen it being incredibly helpful to musicians! 🙏

I am planning on purchasing my son his firat guitar for his birthday, am having flashbacks to when my mom did her best and got me the cheapest guitar she could find at the ponshop because i showed interest, love you mom... anyway it sucked so bad and at the time i though it was me that sucked and left the hobby for a long time until I met my Gibson J-15, now I know, quality really is the difference, problem is im not a rich man and my son is showing interest only at the Gibson Les Pauls.. and its only my fault 🤦‍♂️ whats a dad to do?

Then I’d tell him I’ll only get him a Gibson when he can play me Snow by the chilli peppers😂 when I was young I learned on a cheap hand me down that I was grateful to have, didn’t expect my parents to drop a lot of money on something I didn’t need. I’ve seen too many beginners get a 500$+ guitar as their first one and never actually learn it.

If he’s really stuck on a Les Paul then I’d look around for a used Epiphone Les Paul for sale, same thing as the Gibson but 200$ new instead of 1000$👍 The guitar doesn’t make the guitarist, the guitarist makes the guitar.

There's a lot of guitars now that are more affordable, I'd invest more in a good guitar tech person to set up the instrument, or try changing to lower strings. Definitely agree there's some great resources on learning to adjust comfort on a guitar. Every guitar is a different shape and size, so I find it best to experiment to find one that feels and fits best, and then have a guitar tech adjust strings with a good set up. Some people like lighter gauge strings, detuning and/or using a capo. One strategy is having a good guitar tech who sets string height as low as can go without buzzing. It takes some experimenting to find a setup that feels best.

I had a beautiful pair of Yamaha Acoustic guitars in the early 80s (6and12 string) that were nearly impossible to "note" on due to pathetic frets and the strings being to high off the fret board. They were beautiful, and the acoustics were ephemeral but i traded them to real guitarist who rebuilt them.
