Great insight. @Johnbunn: if you would be filming alone, would you mostly or completely film with a monopod or a gimbal or something else? And why? Thanks in advance.

Do you think videographers can cater to the content creator market? and how?
@tylershivesfilms

Absolutely not. You think I'm bringing $60,000 in camera equipment to be a content creator? We are filmmakers at heart. I want to create stories, not content. Two entirely separate clans.

Here is my honest opinion from Indianapolis. The wedding industry has changed vastly. Everything is a popularity contest in the high end space. The top 5-7 planners are all fighting over the same (2) wedding videographers (***and other services are seeing the same as well. It's crazy to see other vendors gravitating, commenting on other vendors posts who have the highest follower counts but ignoring other vendors who they could potentially build with***)- both have the highest follower count consecutively. The truth is, planners want their vendor teams to be the most sought out vendors to cast more light on their businesses. Ultimately, planners treat their companies as businesses over authentic relationship building that benefits brides on a price savings vs a planner building a wider net thrown with their vendor team. If you were a planner trying to scale, do you want to be seen with the vendors with the most followers in your area or the bottom feeders with 200 followers? That is the sad truth. So every single planner that is new, young, old, in the middle all are gravitating to the vendors with the highest follower count. It's all about the gram, follower count, etc. I think this is an unspoken truth that people will deny to their graves but the proof is in the pudding. Those top end relationships in the luxury market, they only want to be seen with the Jones' as well. So you're not going to take relationships and be referred by Ray Roman's planners, etc. Now the second part to this is videographers are all just ripping each other off at this point. Schools like this, that are cheap, accessible, and sky rocket people's capabilities so fast. that it's so hard to differentiate videographers now. I can give you my top 3-5 competitors here locally and I promise you, outside of color grades, you really aren't going to see some dramatic difference. We see videographers niche'ing down to Super 8mm, vintage, colorful, etc... there just isn't a lot none of us can't do. So the video industry is more competitive today than it's EVER been. We're all using MusicBed, we're all looking at who is getting engagement on their videos and just "running with the trend." I mean how many of you are going to use CINEMA on Musicbed in the next 2-3 months? It's going to be used like CHPTRS was in 2020-2022. We also have EVERYONE being an educator. The truth is, the wedding industry isn't dying at all. I'd say it's grown because of how good wedding films are now across the board. It's just WAY over-saturated and with a lot of people follower chasing and trying to seclude themselves to only working with vendors with the highest followers. So the problem is, there is no growth. Nobody wants to be stuck in the $2,500 range. But many MANY of us can't climb to the $5,000 range to make this worthwhile. Also Indianapolis has almost ZERO weddings from November to about May. It's just not the career choice people think it is. You mix everything he said in this video and it's a cocktail for disaster and bankruptcy.

Video is one of the first vendors, who will feel the pinch in the industry. A canary in the coal mine if you will. I think despite the election being over, the uncertainty is still extremely high with the new administration. Our economy is an overweight man trying to cross a high wire while eating a big mac. Last week's flash crash in the stock market was just a tiny slip of the mask. All Eyes on the Federal Reserve.

Great episode! I've started to see with the more you charge - the more you're using that money for travel fees or second shooters, etc. I've come to find out I really hate traveling very far and really found a sweet spot in shooting a 7-9 hour day within a 2 hour drive for me. I can still charge between $4k-$5k and keep a big chunk of that to pay myself/invest in my buisness. I live just about 1 hour from Atlanta, so I still feel like I could push a little more!

I feel as this comment is a downer in tone. Kidding. But to be honest, we have been going through a lot. I know it is hard to understand, but we are real people, pushing to grow as artists, business people, and friends. Nick and I are in a good spot, and we have been through the hardest year in our business. The market has shifted, it changed the tone of the wedding industry, and the only thing we know to do is to be completely transparent and honest. We went to record an episode together, and it didn't feel right. We didn't have anything that needed to be said together, so we decided to record separate episodes. Not sure what you'd want from us, but that is the truth.

2 weddings a year. How long does it take to edit each one and what do you do with the other 325 days of the year. How’s 2 weddings growth. I would assume less filming gives space and time to make elaborate films but… hmm. Understand your being open but it’s been a difficult one to understand.

Hi John and Nick! LOVING the podcasts lately, the transparent 'coffee house hangout' feel is amazing! I wanted to see if you guys could do a podcast / KZbin video on creating custom proposals. I have always had a package based system, but planners are recommending I change to custom proposals. That terrifies me but I am feeling motivated and ready to try it. Would love any and all advice on doing that! It could be really great to see you both take one or a couple of your students who do packages and show them (while showing us) how you would turn their packages into custom proposals? Any advice would be super helpful!

Didn't know you're a WWE guy, Nick! I watched the Mr. McMahon doc too. I've watched many others they've done on things that have happened on and off camera (Dark Side of the Ring, etc). ALSO, I'm working on a doc too!! I start filming next week! To coincide with the upcoming 20th Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I'm doing one on how it springboarded me to living the life that I have now. It's not going to be primarily about the storm, but I can't talk about my life without it playing a significant role. I was planning on just making this for my kids in case something happens to me while they're still young, but there seems to be interest from people that aren't even family. We shall see how this goes!!
