I remember Mancini had very surprisingly won Monte Carlo and Rome on the run up to the French that year. Remember being quite surprised that Stefan won this so comfortably

When Edberg was on, he was virtually unstoppable. One of the most focused athletes I've ever had the privilege of watching.

Connors is prof positive that the "old guys really could hit the ball !when Connors switched over to a modern racqett in the late 80s it gave his game some new life , he hamdles Edburg here with it ! And this was before his great US OPEN run in 91! 😮

Sampras said some time latere that this loss had devastated him and it really motivated him to get into gear. When he was still in his prime, Edberg was often a tough opponent for Sampras. Able to kick his serve up high on Sampras's backhand and rush him. Edberg won their only two grand slam meetings - here in 4 sets and the 1993 Australian Open in straight sets.

i think edberg liked playing muster where as most players didnt, not many could hang with muster from the baseline, another player edberg liked playing i think was brad gilbert.

muster had played all baseliners in previous rounds, including destroying alexander volkov 6-3,6-3,6-2 in the 4th round. oh and an incredible get by muster at 6.42, tells you how hard he was working to get every ball back

Privilege 2 see both. 1992 Edberg Newhaven, CT. Washington, M. Danbury, CT. To support grass roots program. I still currently use Stefan's service grip till this day.! Love this match up.

I well recall watching this match live, and as much as I really liked Stefan Edberg, I was rooting for the underdog, Michael Chang. (Stefan certainly carved out a most tremendous tennis career for himself as well). Cheers (also!) to that grand NBC commentating team of Dick Enberg and Bud Collins. Their French Open and Wimbledon coverage was especially top-notch - I think it was during the very early 1980's when I first became a fan of theirs, and that lasted for decades. May those two bright souls RIP. As Bob Hope used to sing, "Thanks for the Memory."

Pete simply did not have it this day. Groundstrokes going everywhere. Serve not cooperating. That, plus Edberg was on! Love both these players.

As Jimmy put it at the time (sorry for the poor rephrasing), he made the kind of match you dream of for a handful of times in a career, while Edberg made the kind of match you hope won't happen than a handful of times in a career. The net result was that: a slaughter.
