Very good performance indeed. But I trust all Americans reading this will check out on KZbin the two Sealey brothers (the late Al, and the surviving brother Dave) from whom they got this little masterpiece of a 1926 classic from the English Music Hall. The brothers - absolutely consummate performers - went under the stage name of Cosmotheka, and were simply nonpareil. They existed as a duo from 1972 until Al’s death in 1999, and left a legacy of vocal perfection… especially when it came to tongue-twister patter songs. And here are the lyrics… A PROPER CUP OF COFFEE (R.P. Weston and Bert Lee) The Shah he sat on his oriental mat, In his harem, High Street, Persia, He took a sip from his coffee, just a drip, And he says to his slave, "Here, Gersha! Gersha! Gersha! Curse yer! This is the 'orriblest cup of coffee in Persia!" Cho: What I want is a proper cup of coffee, Made in a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot, But I want a cup of coffee from a proper coffee pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, They're no use to me, so If I can't have a proper cup of coffee From a proper copper coffee pot, I'll have a cup of tea!" In days of old when nights were cold, And coffee was much cheaper Dick Turpin rode to a coffeehouse in Stroud Showed his pistols to the coffeehouse keeper. He said, "Stand and deliver, For I am all a-quiver." Cho: King Solomon would carry on According the ancient scandals. He made him lots of silver coffee pots With diamond spouts and 'andles. One day he says to the Queen of Sheba, "We might as well be in any old tea-bar, 'cause... Cho: (twice)… [from Geoff Parker, who learned it in London in 1968.] Hope this background helps…

Wow I have been on a crazy rabbit hole tonight of nostalgia songs that somehow ended up here. I remember seeing them performing in a Zany Brainy store in like…1998 or 99 maybe?? I really thought that was something I made up until I just searched it and saw that they did indeed do a tour of zany brainy throughout the country. What a weird time the 90s were.

I happened to see Trout in the early 90s somewhere in east Texas. I did not know who they were and only came in to the bar(?) to have a beer. It was very much fun and enjoyable. I later saw them in Dallas. I still like listening to them.

I raised my son on this video we had on VHS. He called me about it tonight. Some little girl had stolen it and as luck would have it we found it again. Now he has a son. So I'm sure he will raise my grandson on this. Most wonderful craftmanship and showmanship for two awesome guys I had the pleasure of meeting. I took my son to a show in Fort Worth but it was a grown up show but he was so excited. I think that's when he thought I knew all musicians. hahaha

Lyrics for those who can't' understand them all: A Sultan sat on his oriental mat In his harem in downtown Persia. He took a sip of coffee, just a drip, And he said to his servant Kersia, "Aw curse ya', curse ya', curse ya', That's the worst cup of coffee in Persia!" 'cause All I want is a proper cup of coffee Made in a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot, But I want a proper coffee in a proper copper pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they are no use to me. If I can't have a proper cup of coffee In a proper copper coffee pot, I'll have a cup of tea. In days of old, when knights and men were bold, And whiskey was much cheaper. Ben Turpin rode to a coffee shop And showed his pistols to the keeper He said, "Stand and deliver! Can't you see that I'm all a quiver?" 'cause All I want is a proper cup of coffee Made in a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot, But I want a proper coffee in a proper copper pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they are no use to me. If I can't have a proper cup of coffee In a proper copper coffee pot, I'll have a cup of tea. When Bonaparte found that he was in the cart And he lost that Waterloo fight. He gave his sword to Wellington, my Lord, and he said, "Those British can't half fight. Now you've had your Waterloo, sir, tell me what Am I having with you, sir?" 'cause All I want is a proper cup of coffee Made in a proper copper coffee pot. I may be off my dot, But I want a proper coffee in a proper copper pot. Iron coffee pots and tin coffee pots, they are no use to me. If I can't have a proper cup of coffee In a proper copper coffee pot, I'll have a cup of tea. Now King Solomon and his queen would carry on, So we heard in the ancient scandals. He bought her lots of silver coffee pots With diamond legs and handles. And said the queen of Sheeba, "I'd rather have any old tea bag, " 'cause

Because they were performing it before they recorded the album. That's what many musicians do: hone a song through live performances so that when you get to the studio, you can knock it out. Also, this is an older song, so it may have simply been part of their live repertoire for a while before they decided to record it. Or they had recorded it before in a small release (or it wasn't released) or something, and wanted to record it again. Or the recording had been made, but the album wasn't finished or released for a couple of years. All are options.
