Merry Christmas Tony, yeah, model railroading seems to require a real life back shop. I see you have a extensive locomotive servicing facility there in your workshop, almost wonder if N scale requires more cleaning and de hairing than HO to maintain acceptable performance. If you have a moment how to you clean wheels, the paper towel / IPA trick doesn't seem to be enough for me Thanks Mario

Solid update, Not sure, but after having some minor issue in my helix... I will be adding the rule only 4 axle units, but it gives me a reason to run 3 and 4 consist trains sets. Helix is mostly used for running a display with the trains looping etc. around the layout.

Wow! Amazing layout. Can't wait to see more. 💯 P.S. I recently upgraded all of my rolling stock with Intermountain metal wheels and most of them with body mounted MTL couplers. I also added weight to cars that were well below NMRA weight recommendations, bringing them up to proper weight. It's made a huge difference. Out of over 440 wheels I did not get a single bad one, and every car I've checked so far has been in perfect gauge. They roll smoother and replacing the lighter plastic wheels slightly lowers the COG, allowing me to run longer trains. I literally have to try to get a derailment, even when pushing 20+ cars. I bought some Athearn metal wheels a year or so ago and one of the wheels fell apart just installing it into the truck, and 2 more were out of gauge. Maybe it was just a bad run from the factory, or perhaps they got smashed in shipping or handling (I bought them new from a local hobby shop, so I have no idea).

I have a mixture of 50 / 50. I was thinking of staying with plastic so I can just toss them out and replace with new ones when they get dirty but like the look and sound of metal obviously. Tony, are you going to plastic?

I remember when N-Gauge train-sets were first available in North America. They were very affordable, compact and it was the first time I saw bendable track. The electronics of the locomotives would usually short-out after continued use, and the tracks had trouble maintaining a constant electrical connection as the trains passed over them. N-Gauge was more delicate than Lionel and probably not the best option for my 8 year old self. Your layout is beyond impressive. Thanks for the video.

Hu. Very nice but I don’t understand why. I’m into desert racing. Most people don’t get it as well. I wish my expensive hobby was cheaper than yours. That being said. How much do you think you have tiered up in this? Money/time?

Hard to say on time. I think I started the layout in 2015 or 2016. Really started cranking in 2018 with the yard. However, I’ve been back into nscale since 98 and did a lot of work on custom locomotives and rolling stock. As far as cost? I’ve probably put the owner of nscale supplies kid through college.

I've thought about doing 2 levels? But the second level for me would be all just scenic running. And then the bottom level would have my industries on it. The height between levels would need to be at least 36", making the bottom level at 28" or below. I would rather be comfortable sitting in a chair, switching the lower level and standing and walking while running the scenic run on the top level. hlHO versus N scale! Have fun building!

I can't believe KZbin waited this long to recommend your videos. Your scenes are dead on, went on google and looked up your lift bride prototype. Quick question; you mentioned that you use both Fast Tracks jigs and paper templates, mind if I ask how much more worth is it to invest in the jigs as far as quality and time? I have a made a dozen or so paper template ones with code 40 with pretty good results.
@tonyhammes5848

Thanks. The jigs definitely speed things up. I bought a #5 and #6 but have a lot of turnouts. I use the templates for all curved, wyes and #8s
