To identify the the bad connection, the current must be unbalanced between leg 1 and leg 2. The greater the imbalance, the further apart the voltages can become. Your DMM cannot see a bad connector causing the distorted voltage, downline from the DMM. The bad connector must be on the source side of the point where you can measure the voltage spread. Does your meter have a way to measure amps? I will be happy to help you troubleshoot this.

I'd love to see you use a length of coax (with or without a messenger attached to it) and have it carry the return to the transformer, so we could see if the whole thing goes up, or just the ends. I don't think any company I've contracted for have ever placed much importance on detecting unsafe conditions. They don't supply amp clamps, and I've never owned one in 18 years, just a FVD.

Haven't watched the video, but in my 18 years as a cable guy, I'm always on the lookout for videos on open neutrals and how it can create hazardous conditions for us. I've seen a handful of melted coax cables and connectors, usually within a few inches of our ground blocks in the house, or at the taps outside. My most recent one last month had an aerial coax drop that was melted nearly the entire length! The customer said it was smoking the night before. I didn't touch anything, assuming it was still dangerous. Called the power company and described the melted line. Lineman came out, proved it was safe to the meter, and didn't seem too concerned. I felt kind of dumb and was convinced it was a serious concern. Anyway, I replaced it and told the guy to call an electrician if it happened again. Well, I just checked the history and another tech was out and replaced the drop again. He had cable maintenance come out and replace the tap and said it could've been feeding voltage down the messenger of the drop. I'm not well versed on the outside plant, but I'm still wondering if it's an intermittent open neutral on the customers side.

Unbalanced load is using the cable Cable wire to return back to bonded tap on pole to system neutral. Always use an amp clamp before removing cable wires as you don’t want to become the path back to transformer. I’ve absolutely seen intermittent open neutrals, heavy corrosion on neutral connections can cause this, in the meter can, weatherhead, mid span or transformer. Also it could be on the neutral lug in the customers panel/ bad section of service entrance wire as well.

We used to carry a hair drier to put load on the service at the meter base if the customer wasn't home. An amp meter can also be used by checking amperage on each side of the connectors of the neutral. If the neutral connections are all OK, you will read the difference between the two hot legs. 10 amps on one hot leg, 12 amps on the other, you should read 2 amps on the neutral with good connections. With bad neutral connection, it will be a real squirrelly reading that can fluctuate.

@@charlesbrakeville5825 The heat gun is just a hair dryer on steroids. Sometimes the smaller current unbalance wasn’t enough to show the problem quickly. I had one that took 15 minutes with the heat gun before detectable with a DMM. Add a thermal camera and the baby ones will show up.

@linema22n I know what the heat gun is. I own one. I also know some neutral issues take time showing up & to find. I had to use recording volt meters in many cases to determine if the issue was on the company's side of the meter or the customer's side to determine if they need an electrician. Also, in many cases, a 220v load will not make it show up. Then you need the 120v loads to cause the unbalance of load to cause it to show. Still, some take longer to troubleshoot. I worked on many of these in my 38 years in the trade.

So does the FCC require yall to fix these issues since it interferes with radio communications, also would not fixing this issue lead to power issues later on?
@linema22n
@linema22n 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your question. Yes, The FCC makes the electric utility responsible for correcting only that noise generated by the equipment and hardware that it actually owns. It is the utility's responsibility to locate a source of noise emanating from their equipment. There are many causes of RFI. A percentage of RFI can be caused by utility owned hardware and a small percentage of those power-line noise emitters will evolve to power issues for the utility customers. I see the higher the primary voltage and the older the line, the higher the percentage of utility owned equipment causing RFI. I patrol line with a RFI detector to help locate issues before they can become a problem for our customers.

hey my cb radio audio is coming out the heater vent on the ceiling of one of the rooms in my house. its a old metal type forced air type register. ever heard of that before? its like loud and clear in that bedroom
@linema22n
@linema22n 8 ай бұрын
I have seen this recently in an experiment. In my case, I would not have described the audio as loud and clear. This Reddit user does a good job describing the phenomenon; Many metal objects around the house can pick up radio signals. Everything from the coils in your bed frame to tin foil can receive them. Though the signals are going through them, however, it's not often that they are amplified enough to be audible. But if you are close enough to an antenna the electromagnetic field can be strong enough to oscillate at the frequency of the transmitter. If it vibrates strongly enough, as metal parts within the base of the fan appear to have, it can make a noise loud enough for you to hear. During WWII, Allied troops were known to use similar methods (intentionally) in order to listen to the radio whilst in Italy. German forces could detect local oscillators (a part within a radio used to select frequencies), so they made their own radios using metals such as razor blades, nails, and pencil lead as detectors.

Why didn't the recloser with thinner oil, after heating it to 140 degrees lockout 1st?
@linema22n
@linema22n Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question. For 40 years I have thought thick and thin oil should operate the OCR differently. The way we think, the thinner oil should have flowed faster through the weep hole and the device should have operated faster. A curve timing tester should have been used but was not available. Two things I think about, 1, timing difference is probably in milliseconds and we can't see/hear that. Second, the oil temperatures may not have been drastically different enough to change the viscosity of the mineral oil. The fault current delivered was less than three hundred amps and the curve reacts to fault magnitude. If I could have pushed a one- or two-thousand-amp fault, the results may have been different.

I am an amateur radio operator who recently tracked some RFI down to a pole. The power company didn't have skills or equipment. I tracked it down using a variety of methods (it was about a mile from the receive site), but mainly proved a particular pole using a 440Mhz high gain yagi. We had access to a Radar Engineers Model 251, but what is interesting is, the Model 251 did not at indicate any issues on the pole, despite where it was aimed. The pole had a cutout and lightning arrestor inline. The power company jumpered over the cutout and lightning arrestor, and we found the noise stopped. So the cutout and arrestor were replaced (this hardware was actually recently installed). Technically I don't know if it was the cutout, connections or arrestor, however, I have a guess it was the arrestor, and perhaps the dish couldn't pick up the internal arcing - or maybe there wasn't any. Your videos are excellent, showing great information. But it is important to note that this stuff can be very hard to find and there isn't always a "smoking gun".
