One note I would like to add on using this technique, and that is there is a sweet spot on how much slip (splashpan drippings) to use. Too much and the tar paper will slip and throw off your center, especially with the large items and not enough and it won't grab the paper. What I do is smooth out the paper on the bat with a wet sponge; and then I let it sit for about 10 minutes or so. This has worked great for me. The other thing is that, when the rim is leather hard, flip the piece upside down on another bat, and then peel the paper away from the edge of the bat with you one hand, while pulling up the bat with the other had. I do this on a banding wheel, as it allows me to work my way around the piece till finally the bat just pops off, there is no need to wire it off. And like you lauradavenport1645, I figured that the cost of a whole roll of tar felt was very cheap compared to to the price of bats, and with the uses that it offers. ;-)
