Brilliant…. I used to play a stripped down version of Ask when I was last in a band…. I think I’ll explore further with you…. Also getting a 360 this month to go with my JM Jag! 🎉

@@neilyoung5029 that’s great yes please check out my Smiths and other videos. I don’t have a Jag, I’d be tempted if I was a bit younger and played more. You’ll love the Ricky, they are a bit different, they can be a challenge to play for some parts, but they are worth it especially as you have another guitar to pair with it. Thanks for supporting my channel and enjoy your new guitar 🙏🎸🤓

Brilliant stuff Gary. As a suggestion maybe do a full play through at the start? Can't really complain here though excellent tutorial.
@GuitarGary.2 күн бұрын
@@timaddison707 I’ll bear that in mind thanks, I have done play throughs at the start of some videos in the past. The reason I don’t always is because it makes the video longer and because I don’t usually play along with the track or a backing track, so it’s a lot of lone guitar if that makes sense. But I probably could have done it on this one, because I did play through a section of it later in the video. Thanks for your feedback. 👍🤓🎸

It’s a good point you make though. People might want to see what’s in store. It tends to be mainly regular viewers now and hopefully they know they can expect something pretty accurate and what the song is. I look at some channels where it’s just someone playing through a track and I try to make it clear it’s a tutorial rather than a cover, as on all KZbin videos a lot of people swipe away early on. Thanks for following my channel and I’ll bear it in mind 🙏🎸🤓

Great job Gary! Just one question where you play the chorus "but that joke isn't funny anymore". Do you repeat that part for "it was dark as I drove the point home" Sorry if this sounds dumb. I think it's repeated but I could be wrong. Cheers brother, for taking the time and effort to post this for everyone. Tough tune but a magnificent one.
@GuitarGary.4 күн бұрын
Thanks. No it’s not the same as the part for “It was dark as I drove the point home”. I agree that in this song it’s not always easy to relate the guitar part to where the lyrics are up to but the answer to your question is around the 16 minute mark - watch a few minutes either side of that to get it all. Good luck hope you nail it and thanks for following my channel 🤓🎸

Coolness you did cover it around the 19 or 20 minute mark. I think it's the same as what I had posted earlier but all good. Had to re-watch a few times but you explained it pretty darn well. Great lesson. Thanks very much fpr your lesson. The very final bit on the outro here is, to me, the very essence of early Smiths. Beautiful, other-worldly, with a tinge of longing and sadness. Marr was such a composer. Can't believe he was a teenager when he wrote this stuff.

Thanks so much for this Gary - another great lesson which again you nailed. You always manage to capture the spirit of the Smiths songs which I think is pretty difficult given that often there are several over-laid guitar parts on the records. Like you I saw The Smiths on the Queen is Dead tour in 1986 (who were incredible) and it still amazes me that after all this time the music still sounds fresh and relevant. All good. I’m sure you get lots of requests but if you do want to add one to your list, Hand in Glove would be a great addition. There doesn’t seem to be a good tutorial on KZbin and I know you’d do it justice. Only if you feel like it. Happy Christmas to you and yours. Cheers.

@GuitarGary.25 күн бұрын
@@blindpew69 it is but mine’s a J-40 🤣 Yes they’re not cheap but I love Martins. But I guess you have to pick one up and see if it’s right for you. If you’re going about playing live neither might be the right choice as they don’t come with pickups and it’s a lot of guitar to risk in small venues. If you’re playing at home and just want great acoustic tone I don’t think you can beat Martin, any of the better end ones including D28, D35. 🤓🎸

@@GuitarGary. The problem for me is that I don’t know which notes you’re playing. There’s no tab to check which notes you play, it’s hard to figure it all out without them being shown on the screen
@GuitarGary.27 күн бұрын
@Sxl3zzy ok I’m sorry if your having difficulty following it. I guess it depends on each player. There are tabs available online so maybe check those out too which might help. When I do these videos I usually listen to the track, look at what else has been published with videos and tabs, see if JM has any videos of him doing it, plus look at old Smiths footage. Then I boil it all down to what I think is going on. I still think it’s best to approach JMs playing from chords rather than tab myself, as tab sometimes loses it in the translation in my opinion and can present as a load of separate notes, when it’s mainly chords, sometimes played in different shapes, and picking out notes within those chords. Good luck with your playing and hope you suss these songs out 🤓🙏🎸👍

Gary , Directly after the DGAC sus 4ths 2nd middle sec -2:38 on the track - what are the chords being played I suppose over the start of the mad hammering start to solo ?
@GuitarGary.27 күн бұрын
It’s a while since I did this, I’ve just listened to the track and it sounds like the chords are a repeat of the D Sus part again to me, not got my guitar with me as we speak, listening in a coffee shop! Sounds like most of it is the D / D sus part, but it doesn’t go up to G A And C, try B! But that’s a guess without my guitar 🤣🤓🎸

hey Gary, brilliant and subscribed , question: I looking to buy a 52RI i just would like to know the finish /colour on your tele ? is this the Butterscotch I should be looking for ? I see other 52s with grain ect and i might be wrong however, yours does not appear to the grain showing which is what I am searching for ? thanks in advance
@GuitarGary.28 күн бұрын
Thanks so much. Mine is a 51 Nocaster, it’s called a closet classic because the finish is aged with some lacquer checking but not as beat up as a relic. I don’t know what finishes they do on it these days as mine is from 2006 so they may have changed things. You can definitely see the grain on mine in real life, I think it’s an ash or swamp ash body, very resonant and light. 🤓👍🙏🎸
@paulscaife-m9m28 күн бұрын
@@GuitarGary. Cheers Gary, yes i agree looking again i can see the grain in yours. Think its best for me to pick this next one up by hand and in person 👍👍

@paulscaife-m9m I think the 52 Ris are great, the Nocaster is a bigger price tag. That said the 52s now feel heavy to me because I’m used to mine, you’d expect some difference and I think you have to pick them up. I like the grain actually and I guess some would say a very thin coat makes it more resonant etc. that said when your banging out Born to run through a good valve amp who cares it’s gonna sound great 🤣🎸🤓
