Can you recommend someone to make a penny farthing tire?

I can't. Just made all the stuff myself. but if it's just the tire you need, maybe off of an old wheelchair? I wish I thought of that when I was building my penny farthing wheel!

Sure, I'll make a video on it soon. But the top is hinged and anchored into the wall, the posts on the side have pins holding them which are easily removed, and there are anchors at the bottom that bolt the awning to the wall. Thanks for asking

A Richard of all TRADES, glad to see you! I have a creative experimental idea for you, why don't you create a penny-farthing, but so that the front wheel is only the leading one, and the steering wheel is made small by using cables, as is done on modern cargo bicycles. The front wheel will be the leading one, but it is fixed with the help of additional horizontal feathers, completing a full-fledged dropout. Moreover, I suggest that instead of a simple bushing, put a 3-step planetary one so that you can at least rest and not pedal all the time. And that in the dry balance, we will get a comfortable, safe bike, but at the same time with the advantage and feeling of a penny-farthing, a sense of flight and freedom.

@arichardofalltrades6770

I don't know, but would suggest trying a little paint on a piece of scrap. Also, I would suggest lightly sanding the surface to remove any film. The paint will most certainly stick better to a scuffed surface.

Does anyone know, If its possible for you to use conventional fiberglass on top of pmf, or fmf? Say you wanted to upgrade without completely having to rebuild the piece.
@arichardofalltrades6770
@arichardofalltrades6770 5 ай бұрын
I couldn't say for sure, but if you did, you would probably need to use epoxy for the first few layers just to get good adhesion. In my experience, conventional fiberglass isn't an upgrade if you are just looking for a barrier layer. Thanks for the comment!

I got the paint for free! Also, I did a pair of standup paddle boards. One was with the poor man's fiberglass - paint on fabric, and the other was epoxy on fiberglass. The paint on fabric is holding up great, and the fiberglass is trash. I think that the epoxy isn't going to do well in sunlight without some sort of UV protection, but additionally, as just a protective barrier, the epoxy doesn't seem to work out too well. If I put on enough to make a hard shell, it may have worked out ok. Or maybe the cheap epoxy isn't great for boats. Not sure, but the paint works surprisingly good. Thanks for the comment

@@arichardofalltrades6770 If you have any further interest in epoxy , you could use aluminum paint over the eopxy. Aircraft builders use this on fabric covered planes for UV protection. the aluminum flakes are a much more effective UV barrier than pigmented paints. If you have an interest in a taut covering, aircraft dacron can be heat shrunk after application for a smooth tight cover. The last time I looked, you could buy dacron that is OK for experimental aircraft much cheaper than dacron for certified aircraft . It can also be purchased in different weights. I did build a kayak where I used a fabric skin saturated with epoxy. Then I fiber glassed the fabric and finished it off with latex house paint. That combo worked great. Messing around with small boat building is lots of fun where you can experiment without breaking the bank.

What kind of cloth do you use for your poor man's fiberglass? Is it a polyester or plastic cloth or is it a cotton type water absorbent cloth? And also do you have to use latex paint or could you have used say an external house enamel paint for your poor man's fiberglass and would that have made it better or worse and would it have affected the foam underneath?

I used painter's tarp on the PMF, but on the skin on frame kayak, I used polyester, which worked fine as well. I think you can use just about any cloth. Same with the paint. I would expect an exterior paint to work better than the interior latex I used. Thanks for the question

Original PMF boats did not use titebond glue because it didn’t exist. There are some examples of original pmf boats that have lasted decades. Titebond works great but most people use it because it’s cheaper than most paint by the gallon.

The poor mans fiberglass is best done on the bear wood. Put a good coat of glue directly on the wood so it soaks in, and lay your fabric of choice directly on the wet glue, and squeegy or roll all the bubbles out so it adheres well. Then add another good coat of glue on the fabric. Let it dry and sand it. Repeat with another coat and sand again. You will get a finish much like fiberglass, nice and smooth. THEN you're ready for paint. It works well for the topside of a boat, but will not last long on the hull. It will eventually abosrb water and will not be water proof if left under water all day. It even says on the container that it is not good for below water level continously.
