I get your frustrations with Straub. I started with IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW. It felt like the book was made of lead and I was reading it through lead glasses. He's one of those writers, like Robert Aickman, who can alienate people forever. You have to figure out how to read them, and most people don't want to do that. I didn't. Who wants to sit there, blinking and shaking their head? I eventually made my way back to them because they spoke to me on a level I didn't understand. It was like that jolt of fear when you realize you're capable of something awful, or the bitter shock of having a secret pain exposed. People don't like that, either. I don't blame them. We all read for different reasons. That's the beauty of it. Thanks for this review. I appreciate your honesty.

I think you hit the nail on the head in what you said. It pretty much encapsulates what I was feeling when I read this book. I will probably come back to Straub in a later day. I'm currently really into Brian Evenson's work.

Hot Take, The Sicilian is my favourite book of all time! The Giuliano side of the story was really entertaining and if you could, can you recommend me some books similar to the anti-hero Giuliano story in The Sicilian?
@ChorizoBros21016 күн бұрын
I'm not sure of any more "Robin Hood" types, but there are some stories with our heroes that ride the line of not always being the good guys. Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae come to mind from Lonesome Dove. Llewelyn Moss from No Country for Old Men. Arguably Paul Atreides from Dune.

Unpopular opinion: I don't care what OSC's opinions are. If I only bought books by authors whose opinions aligned with my own, my options would be extremely limited. You can call him a bigot, but it's still just his opinion or belief system. It's not like he SAed a minor or unalived someone.

We all have our opinions and draw our lines for ourselves. The point is to be a free thinker. Unpopular opinions are welcomed here!

Upon reflection, the xenomorph behaves like an animal. It isn’t evil. It doesn’t have an agenda. BUT Ash on the other hand, is a tool of the corporate overlords. That makes him so much scarier!
