One thing I still dont get though, is that when making the replacement spurs, wont they get higher and higher each year? It's always coming from new growths so at some point wont they be too high and you have to get rid of the vine?
@TheAWRI
@TheAWRI 16 күн бұрын
Hi @pastpianist where possible, choosing the lowest spur as your replacement spur will help delay the height increase - though with cane pruning in Nick’s video, it’s natural the vine may grow a little bit taller each year, however, it would take a long time for the vine to grow so much in height it becomes unmanageable. Nevertheless, in saying this, it’s likely that water shoots (shoots arising from dormant buds on wood that’s older than 1 year) will push out from other areas of the vine (including the crown) in years when the vines have excess capacity. The pruner will be aware of the value of these water shoots and will use these canes to create new spur positions and prevent the vine from going too high. Generally, these shoots are less fruitful and are removed at pruning unless required to provide replacement fruiting wood.

So then how do you fix the spur height getting to high and the vine losing its structure? Nick mentioned this at 11:49 but did not explain the solution. Seems to me since last year's canes become this year's spurs, the spur height gradually climbs every year. Then what?
@patrickkuffour
@patrickkuffour Ай бұрын
im still learning myself but you have to find or leave a new growth at the bottom of the spur, then you can cut the one thats high and keep the one at the bottom, this becomes your new spur, always cut the lowest cane or new growth. not sure if this makes any sense, i was having the same issue at first.

Hi @jeffmeyers3837 - As Nick mentions at 11.38, where possible, you want to select the lowest positioned cane out of the two canes that grew from last year’s spur (provided the cane isn’t weak or damaged) as this will help delay the height increase. Though in saying this, it’s natural the vine may grow a little bit taller each year, however, it would take a long time for the vine to grow so much in height it becomes unmanageable. Additionally, the pruner will have the option in some circumstances to use water shoots as new spur positions. Water shoots arise from dormant buds on wood that’s older than 1 year and can push out from other areas of the cordon that aren’t already established spurs. Generally, these shoots are less fruitful and are removed at pruning unless required to provide replacement fruiting wood. You’ll just need to be a bit opportunistic when this occurs

Great detail and easy to follow. This is what I was doing, but sometimes have little ladders as the vine is now 7 years old and felt better to confirm. Thanks!

I use mono ammonium phosphate in my vineyard for my nitrogen and the phosphorous, I needed it and it isnt likely to leach out fast. For potassium the only option is K-MAG(Langbeinite) or Sulfate of Potash.

Question: Seems with this technique you'll run into the issue of the vine continuing to gain height year after year - how do you compensate for that?

Hello Michael and Nick, I've started growing grapes 3 years ago and tried to run as goos as possible.Last year I had a good yield of grapes. this year I have even more grapes but what do I do to get te biggest and ripest grapes. shoots are being removed and the canes are Topped off. But I've read somewhere that I have to trim of the lower leaves to let the sun shine in and leave the upper half with all of it's leaves because they provide the sugar for the grapes. I would sincerely appreciate your view on this to minimize mistakes. Thanks a lot and congratulations with this great video!!! Is there any specific kind of air used? Only regular compressed air or pure air?
@TheAWRI
@TheAWRI 11 ай бұрын
Air for the aspiration can be done by using a simple air pump, similar to those used in aquariums. Compressed or pure air is not needed. This technique applies a positive pressure through the system. An alternative is to use an electric or water vacuum pump connected to the two-necked flask. This generates a negative pressure through the system which draws air in through the aspiration tube into the wine in the round bottom flask.

This was an awesome tutorial! 5 years ago my dear friend, Jerry, whom is now departed this realm, came and rototilled my parents property, which I’ve inherited. He hit an old root system, which my husband was going to throw on the burn pile. But suddenly, I said “WAIT!, This is where Dad had his wine grapes, and that might be a root!” My husband scoffed at the idea, but my friend Jerry, gushed out ‘well gawlee’ (Just like Gomer Pile!) I planted that piece of root/ wood, even though my hubby said it was just a piece of junk. Well, that piece of junk grew roots, and then sprouted out one scrawny vine, about mid summer. After that I just let it grow, without much trimming. The 2nd summer I got a couple of cups of grapes! Then each year, more & more! Last year I harvested 33lbs of delicious blush colored wine grapes (2-4 seeds per grape). I’ve made Grape Juice, Jelly & Leather out of both the (de-seeded) pulp and the juice. My issue was how do I prune them “this year”, so they will remain abundant producer… Thank you for such a detailed, visual, tutorial!

Why would one want lower yield at home?
@TheAWRI
@TheAWRI Жыл бұрын
It is not necessarily about maximising yield, because quality suffers if the vines don’t have the capacity to ripen the fruit. Pruning is used to regulate the yield on a vine. All buds contain bunch primordia which become inflorescences and ultimately the bunches we harvest. The more buds we remove, the lower the potential yield, but the greater the potential quality of the fruit.
