I haven't seen the entire film in several years, but isn't there at least one (very short) scene near the start of the movie in which jet aircraft of the Honneamise airforce are shown? They do have them, it's just that their space program doesn't get a decent defensive capability - against the hostile forces they know will be coming. Still, the propellor fighters are able to ward off the enemy jet planes long enough until the rocket is successfully launched.
@cammando20575 ай бұрын
Yeah, their navy has jets. Shiro watches one take off as a teenager and even specifies in his narration that only the navy has access to them.
@Specsp4213 ай бұрын
The higher ups in his nation weren't particularly interested in the space program to begin with. So even though they had jets in the form of their navy, they couldn't be bothered to deploy them to the border where the launch is taking place. Hence why the launch was being defended by the propeller crafts that were stationed there.

Probably my favourite piece of music in the film. It's so alien-sounding, underlining how different the fictional cultures of the film are, but there are still elements that are familiar to us, similar to our past and present music. Ryuichi Sakamoto did wonderful work on the film's soundtrack.

Reminds of the track "illusion" in the Akira soundtrack. The inspiration is Kabuki. RIP to the sensei Ryuichi Sakamoto... His contribution will always be remembered, by good people like you who come and listen.

@@ctrl_altesc The actual inspiration is Gagaku, Imperial Court Music. Just look it up and you will see what Sakamoto Ryuichi was using as the basis.

@Mashlegs For me too, this is one of the songs of my lifetime. I’m listening through lots of his music at this very moment after hearing the incredibly sad news, but yes, from the moment I first heard this song oh so many years ago, it was permanently engraved in my heart and mind and there was no way I wouldn’t seek it out at this time. May he Rest In Peace, the same kind of peace his music cultivated in the hearts and minds of so many around the globe. He was truly a treasure✨.
In my opinion, the single most underrated anime film ever made

Well it all depends, rocket planes back when they were "brand new" in our world were faster than propellers but far less maneuverable. So honestly piting that world's state of the art propeller aircraft against brand new rocket planes might still be a somewhat balanced match. But that's my opinion anyway.
