That was great. Appreciated the sense of humour that these guys worked with.

I know this is old, and no one has responded, and very well this may never be seen. I’m a graduate of the school of hard knocks on zero input, zero till farming. But don’t feel sorry for me, because it’s turning out great. I got rid of my drum style roller, and went to by the row, pneumatic downforce crimpers. Once I’ve snapped a Bauer Bar twice, I convert it in to a roller crimper. They are great equipment, but 3-4 yrs with us is equivalent to 20-30 yrs of use on a typical 1500-2500 acre operation. Factor in the hard pulling of planting in to standing cover crop, they snap on you. You would be shocked how many pounds of resistance a smooth flowing cover crop adds. It’s measurable.

For me, the best results come from planting, then roller crimping later. The crop gets planted earlier.

The best pre emergent cultivation tool might be a Phillips harrow in my opinion.

I've wondered about using a Philips rolling harrow. It doesn't dig too deep for post planting, pre-emerge?

I did a four row test strip of buckwheat and tiller radishes (that flowered) all next to my corn 2022 and the number of predator insects from ladybugs to thumb sized garden spiders and praying mantis was astounding -- japanese beetles and grasshoppers appeared but quickly vanished. I had not expected that effectiveness.

How difficult is it to remove perennial Kernza if you want to rotate into a different crop? Out of curiosity to test a small amount of Kernza I checked the Kernza website and they seem quite ... fussy about supplying seed. Suggest they make a quick and easy way to order a half to a pound of seed for testing.

Hi Léa, Very interesting. It's something I plan on trying a little this year. You seem to have the best weed control when you have three "stale seed beds" (11:50 in the video), meaning three cultivation passes prior to planting (I think). Is that correct, and if so, how did you time the three passes. Where they all immediately before planting/drilling, or were they spread out over several weeks in the spring ahead of planting/drilling? Thanks for the presentation, Bruce
@patathontruk4 жыл бұрын
Hi, when I said "3 flushes of weeds" I actually meant 4 tillages passes prior to planting. Pass 1 stimulates the 1st flush of weeds, pass 2 gets rid of the 1st flush and stimulates a second one etc. In that specific case, the ground was tilled on May 12, 23, 31 and June 5 . It is best to space the tillage passes to give enough time for most weeds to germinated but not too much time so the weeds are easily controlled with light tillage (7-10 days, depending on weather).
