Don't bother watching this video. It has no idea what a GUARD DOG is.

Somehow dogs less than 15 lbs don't cut it as guard dogs. Watch dogs? Possibly.

I don’t want a puppy that is in all likelihood going to outlive me. It’s not fair to the puppy. I’ll find an older dog when I’m ready to have another dog in my life.

Older people will be protected by their fierce dogs and older dogs are excellent companions. Adopt a good mutt with a big heart. : )

😅Bassenjs are a catlike dog willi g to lay next to you and let you pet him/her for a while. They like to have another like themselve for company. The Bas likes exercise in hot weather as the breed comes from the Congo area of Africa and started out as a hunting dog. The breed, if receives good coat care has no odor. It is very catlike in its behavior and cleaning itself. The Bas is not a barking dog. If excited they "chortle", a yodel like sound. Bassenjis need a strongwilled owner. I had 2 of them and are susceptible to diabetes, extended bellybuttons, and skin infections. It has been reported that the blood disorders have been eliminated. Life span when I had mine was 7 to twelve years. Persepone died at 7 years and her sister Andromeda died at 13 years.

My own realistic list for seniors looking for a good guard dog. 1: Rottweiler 2: German Shepherd 3: Doberman 4: Jack Russell terrier 5: Great Dane 6: Amstaff/ Pitbull 7: Boxer 8: Border Collie/Collies 9: Standard Schnauzer 10: Cane Corso. Obviously these dogs need proper training and socialization to bring out their best abilities but naturally inherited into their DNA is a deep desire to protect their loved ones with all their being and to be loyal and loving while being extremely obedient and protective. There are so many great guard dog breeds and this list is my humble opinion on the top 10 Guard Dog for seniors. Smaller dogs are normally not included but the Jack Russell and Standard Schnauzer are a formidable exception. Please note these are guard dogs for seniors and not just therapy pets. The Labrador or Golden Retriever are examples. Not every dog is inherently a good guardian especially when it's not originally breed to be so. Poodles and English Bulldogs don't make the list. Also the Amstaff/Pitbull and Rottweilers get a very unjust reputation for being super aggressive and they are mainly that way due to poor breeding and training techniques used by mainly criminal minded and wilfully obtuse owners. These dogs are naturally very lovable, protective, patient and loyal. Please stop discriminating these fantastic dog breeds. As always do your own due diligence and get properly educated about the dog that best fits your needs and the needs of the dog ✌🏽♥️

I agree about the Rottweiler, they are lovable dogs their only downside bc of their biuld they are so strong that sometimes expressing their affection they can be brute in force, but the dun do it intentionally, and they are very protective and caring. GSD are excellent too!!

@mojorisin7371 …. Absolutely not. Seems like some chatGPT copy paste. 90% of the breeds FOR SENIORS “you” suggested are the some of the HIGHEST energy & exercise *required* on earth 🤨 I’m not a senior and they’re out of MY league of energy, training requirements, SIZE, and ability to keep their brain engaged. Did I say SIZE? One jump or solid knock from a Cane Corso or Rottie, and poor Nana will be getting that hip replacement she never wanted. And a Jack Russell?? It’s a terrier. I think literally the highest energy terrier on earth. I’d dislike your comment so many more times than once if I could.

English Mastiffs are great also if you can't tolerate a high energy Cane Corso. I have rescued 3 and they are amazing watch/guard dogs.

My mom always had poodles. When my mom got older , she got a new young poodle puppy . The poodle must have known my mom would not have enough energy to play with the poodle So when my mom and her poodle went outside for their daily walk, the poodle would pick out a toy and take it outside, too The poodle would drop the toy at my mom's feet. My mom would pick up the toy and throw it. The poodle would run to retrieve it then come back to my mom and run circles around my mom. Then drop it again at my mom's feet and the play cycle would get repeated until the poodle got tired and just sit with toy on the ground and wait for my mom to catch up to the poodle. When my mom walked up to the poodle, my mom would pick up the poodle and carry the dog back to the house since both my mom and the poodle knew that play time was over. Peace.

I would worry that I am getting an older dog with problems, medical or emtional issues. A dog someone has already abused and put out to pasture? High vet bills and way more trouble than I can handle, doesnt that happen? And once my kids get used to him then he dies? I just would not want to see that happen. They had two dogs once before they both died from abuse. Someone cruel had placed cameras on the inside of them for the purpose of spying on me? Cruel and unusual to treat a dog or any animal that way! Its been a long time ago we have healed, but I would not want to see my family hurt again! But hey thanks, we will consider adopting now and decide if that is a good fit for us as a family!
