Hi there! Those are are front vowels, which means that they are made with your tongue at the front of your mouth. Does that answer your question?

This merger is a sad sign of everything needing to be simplified. Proud to be from a country ignoring it. To qualify the wh sound as useless is pretty offensive by the way.
