I’ve got an oldie that was my grandfathers, I’m 60 now. Can’t remember the brand but, it must have taken a bad side hit at some point in its life. But the V notch it is broken towards the front. After watching this hafting or re-hafting I’m inspired to cut it down and create a shinglers ax/hammer. Its height should be at least 2.5-3”, perfect to nip of stray small young shoots and limbs in the summer and then do kindling duty in the fall and winter. I’d probably polish the head a bit more just to make it slip through the kindling better. Like you, I wouldn’t clean the eye too much as some rust left will help grip the new haft too. I might use a contrasting wedge wood color for kicks. But, I WILL certainly use the Shou Shugi Bon torch work on the haft to give it some contrast and protection. Maybe go darker and sand back a bit before I hit it with some polymerizing oil like the linseed oil. thanks for the content. I enjoyed it a lot. You got out of it.

I restored an old Plumb hewing hatchet recently, that someone in the past had the bright idea to try and file a double bevel in it and stopped about halfway through there process. Bought it at a yard sale, saw the potential, flattened it back out a bit, polished it up, and hung a new handle, took off the varnish on the handle of course and three coats of boiled linseed oil, along with a light coat of paste wax, and it's a completely restored heirloom that is absolutely something I restored with my own two hands.

You madw this a bit more complicated than it needs to be. Jewelers rouge is red. It is iron oxide. Rouge is the french word for the color red. The green paste is chromium oxide. It is about twice as coarse as iron oxide. Iron oxide is used after chromium oxide. A buffing wheel with a compound will make a knife sharp. It will not leave as good of an edge as can be had. It will heat the fine part of the edge excessively and round it. Use a bench stone to set the bevel. When a bevel is set it will shave hair and paper. The coarse side of a norton india will acheive this. A stone that coarse is only needed for repairing a damaged edge. A good medium stone such as the fine side of the norton india or an arkansas hard is a good place to start on a dull knife. After making sure it will slice paper or shave hairs move to a smooth finishing stone. Microbevel it on the fine stone and be done. If you want a rounded edge strop on a pasted strop.

all-time most memorable movie scene is the waitress from hell or highwater saying. WHAT DONT YA WANT. some things are just to astonishingly simple and will last several lifetimes has more pins & heavier build and lock back that other sodbusters don't have, and many people have case like me, but a carl is less common so it's interesting and c75 is likely to stay sharp longer to?
@bustinout8 күн бұрын
Thats one of the best movies put out in the last 10 years. The Carl Schlieper is built way better in my opinion than the cases and it has a lock. as far as the steel goes the C75 (which I'm assuming is German 1075) has great edge retention and is super sharp. I've used this knife exclusively for almost 3 weeks and it hasn't lost its edge yet.
@Ozarks_Boy-s6d9 күн бұрын
That knife’s way over priced. I can buy a Case sodbuster yellow delrin in carbon steel for $39.
@bustinout8 күн бұрын
Maybe. but the construction and ability to lock the carl schlieper sets it apart from the case.
@Gunners_Mate_Guns9 күн бұрын
I just can't get a consistent angle freehanding it, mostly due to my clumsiness, so I just use a clamp-on Gatco sharpener with diamond stones. I get the edge as good as anyone could ever hope to have that way.
