Should there be any play/slop in the center shaft piece that rotor sits on? Side to side or up and down slop?

An old post, but it is easier to put the washer and nut on, and then put the points and condenser wire.

Howdy. that is pretty much it. Clean Everything. I would recommend new springs and new metal balls. The rust makes them pitted even after you clean them so there is still some sticking when you use the old ones. Good luck and take your time.

I have to do both this and the PTO seal on my Farmall 400. Need to get it up and running before winter arrives here in North Dakota. Did your new seals leak at all? How did it go?

The new seal for the PTO lever did great. No leaks. The seal on the PTO shaft still leaks unfortunately

@@hardygarage4658 Thanks for the follow-up! Great video. Good job. I'm still currently looking for a good source for the new seal parts. Hopefully I'll get some good ones and they all seal up!

Why do you use 5 sentences when ONE will suffice? Too much talk!!!!!!!

The short bolt is in line with my draw bar bracket. If you try using wrong bolt you need to remove draw bar bracket.

I use spray graphite on mine. The big difference made was milling the outer case edge to return close to spec the distance from the outer face to the inner face. 656s had shims that could be removed to reduce the active movement

Yes indeed spend money on the disk brakes. Put all new parts in them. and when you are done there not even half as good a the older band brakes. We have a 350 farmall and Ive been there & done that. We have a U tube video about our 350.

What was the issue with the right brake locking up? My super M is doing the same thing on the left. Thanks for the video!
@hardygarage4658
@hardygarage4658 2 жыл бұрын
it was locking up with just a "relatively" light press of the brake. It looks to be caused by old/rusty steel balls inside the breaks. once I bought new ones and really cleaned the chambers that they sat in. it helped out quite a bit. So it was just old, rust that caused the issue.

I intend to see if the disk brakes can be converted to the older and much better band brakes.

Assemble the springs without the balls in place. Then pry the plates apart and slip the balls in from the side.

An old IHC mechanic told me to take brakes off of a 403 combine, they will bolt on to my SMTA. The 403 original brakes were built heavier than the SMTA brakes. When I found a parts 403, bought them for my tractor. Yes! They are a much heavier duty brake. I noticed a much shorter stopping distance.

I rebuilt the distributor because the tractor was backfiring and had no power when engaging the throttle. When I first took it apart, I found about a teaspoon worth of dust, rust inside, basically not letting the weights move and also the gap for the point was nonexistent. Not sure how the old tractor was even starting up....
