@@just.a.dutchguy awhile back I had a serious look at the Oxi and Torso, and then also the Moog Labyrinth. Very interesting all, but I couldn't see from the demos if the workflow would agree with me. In the 80s I worked quite a bit with the then current kinds of AI in music (and with a couple of the leading people in that time) . Funny thing is a huge amount of sweat and programming back then would get you about to the point where these new generative machines start. In the end I hit the arbitrariness wall and stopped doing that kind of work- I hear some of that quality in these current devices, and can't tell if I'd get beyond that now.

Thanks for listening, and for your comment. I'm thinking about doing a couple of videos about this new Ableton microtonal feature. It is so well implemented. Of course when you're writing music you need to throw away the theory book- what's great about the Ableton feature is that it works very intuitively (to me at least) and especially if you're using Push for writing the melodies. Much more so than any other microtonal environment I've worked in.

The tuning feature is a very welcome addition to the Push 3/Live 12. It gives so much extra options to shape the sounds. Are all sounds coming from the Push 3 Standalone itself or did you use external samples?
@peterhz553 ай бұрын
The tuning feature is so well implemented-- I've used micro tuning at different times over the past 30 years, but this is by far the best implementation I've seen. All the sounds are from Ableton Push. For the noisy percussion sounds, they in with Ableton, but then I took them out to Metasynth (the Spectrum synth module) for processing, then brought back into Ableton. Thanks for you interest....

This sounds really good! Can you explain some more about the setup, and workflow?
@peterhz554 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I've spent the past year focused on learning the Push standalone. I own many synths, but as you know, Push standalone is kind of a closed system, so it took some time to get used to working exclusively in this environment. I started by trying to do everything limiting myself to the sounds that are available in Ableton. Ableton has a very large collection of great sounding and capable synths and sound devices. I'm now starting to add instruments that are outside the Ableton system , as I have here - one of the main synth voices here comes from the Iridium Core taking advantage of the Push external instrument capability, and the string sounds come from a VST- the VSL dimension strings - since Ableton provides somewhat limited string sounds. But with Live 12, the biggest thing for me has been the addition of the scales and chord functions- a leap forward for the program in my opinion. It is set up in a very intuitive way that helps hugely with any kind of harmonic writing. I'm about to start on a piece that uses the further extension of this that also came in Live12- the tuning systems.
@just.a.dutchguy4 ай бұрын
@@peterhz55 Thanks for the reply, appreciate it! I also own a Push 3 Standalone with Ableton Live 12 Suite. I'm a big fan of ambient soundscapes and the Push 3 can offer that, but not at a very high level. I'm interested in the Iridium Core and I believe that it can add so much more. I listened to some Kevin Schroeder ambient patches/soundscapes he made on the Waldorf Iridium/Core and it sounds fantastic. Is the Iridium Core a valuable addition to the Push 3? I'm a old guy(66 years) and making music is a big part of my life for a very long time, but some professional advice is very welcome. Kind regards, Peter, The Nethelands
@peterhz554 ай бұрын
@@just.a.dutchguy OK- interesting.... I'm 71, so to me you're a youngster. The past few years my attitude to gear has been- if something comes along that you really want to work with, go for it- because who knows how long.....When the Push3 came out, I was not contemplating that kind of expense at that moment, but I made it happen very soon after it was announced. I'm very glad I did - it has been a fantastic new way to work, and it keeps getting better. It has been a challenge doing everything inside the box- only using Ableton instruments etc. But I'm now ready to expand, and the Iridium Core is excellent in that role. I bought the original Iridium when it came out a few years ago- I liked it very much, but as many people also thought it is a bit unwieldy and heavy. I never found a good way to incorporate it into my setup. So again, when the Core came out a few months ago , I bought one as soon as I could (also not ideal timing $ wide) . The form factor is so improved, I now use it all the time. It's the same synth as the OG Iridium , but has 12 voice polyphony instead of 16, and has fewer knobs. The knob issue they've dealt with in genius fashion, and the 12 voice thing may be a kind of limitation, but... The addition of the Iridium to the Push setup is great because you have some sounds that just have the extra sound quality and buzz. And it is such a satisfying synth to work with - all the synthesis types make it a synth unlike others I know about. The Push is very well set up to accommodate outboard synths, so all is good for now....

@@peterhz55Hi Peter, thanks! I bought a Elektron Analog Rytm MK2 a few monts ago, but after all I came to the conclusion that the Elektron workflow isn't mine. I can't get used to it. So I decided to sell it and go for the Iridium Core. The way you use the Core gives me inspiration. Can you use the Push 3 MPE padsfor use on the Iridium Core? btw....I owned a Iridium desktop a few years ago but I had to return it 3 times due to hardware problems, so I was done with it as you can maybe understand. I don't read any (hardware) problems with the Core so I would like to try it again.
@peterhz554 ай бұрын
@@just.a.dutchguy Yes, push completely integrates with outboard synths, and works great with core that way. I also had to return and replace my first Iridium desktop - it would simply crash some minutes after startup- every time. But I also had to return and replace the Moog Matriarch to do with tuning problems, so my two best synths had serious growing pains. Don't know what's with that. I haven't heard of any problems with the Core, and I hope it stays that way. I do think that synths are not really finished when they're sent out these days. I had a DX7II from 1987 to about 2007 when it died. Never any problems. And there was never any kind of firmware update in all that time presumably because they knew it was ready for prime time when they first released it. Fantastic synth. Because they both sound better than all my other synths, I have stuck with both the Iridium and Matriarch , and they both behave now. I also own the Hydrasynth, that has been 100% solid. Look forward to hearing what you do with the Iridium Core and Push
