So when I canned mine I debugged, but a had a few little bubbles come up after I water bathed them, should I be concerned?
@TheBigBlueHouseHomesteadКүн бұрын
@@dorotheahamilton-john562 No need to be concerned. A few air bubbles probably escaped a tomato or two.

Can you use dried herbs instead of fresh? And did you mean using iodized salt will ruin your canning recipes? I used it in my canned tomatoes recently and want to be safe! Thanks!
@TheBigBlueHouseHomestead2 күн бұрын
@lindsayalessandroni392 You can use dried herbs. And yes, iodized salt will make your canning goods look murky, or darker. They are still edible, just not pretty. Your tomatoes may turn out a lighter darker, or brownish.

Great job. Vinegar is an acid and cuts thru the calcium build up, lime, crud etc. Just a note, glass is not porous. The bleach, if used, does not stay on the glass if washed and rinsed.

HEADS-UP. / CAUTION!! I just went to replace mine (soggy after a summer's use) and the moment I touched it, wasps came zooming out to attack me. What a surprise!! I got lucky and was able to come down the ladder and run into the house quickly enough, so no stings. But folks should know of the likelihood of real critters taking up residence in this homemade nest!

I watched another guys video that showed the bag attempt just like this and he said it not only did not work but even showed carpenter bees fling closely around it. So I just made some cheap and easy to construct bee traps using a block of wood and a jar.
@TheBigBlueHouseHomesteadАй бұрын
@gregatkinson7276 it takes a couple days for the bees to figure out what's going on. They leave a scent behind, and if they smell it, they try to go back to that area. They now sell paper nests at big box stores that look realistic. I just like this cheap method and it's always worked for me.

What about the skin in tomatoes? Does the skin soften up? Or do i have to use a blender afterwards?
@inhibited44Ай бұрын
I am no expert, but you might try growing a zucchini plant in self watering containers. I grow tomatoes , sweet potatoes and some squash in the containers. The plants love having a basin of water beneath them to feed off. my squash still get slaughtered by borers though.
@inhibited44Ай бұрын
I am 60+ years old and just learned the other day something that probably eliminates the bugs. I asked a few local farmers when I was buying eggs what they do. They said they have no problem with insects. I live a mile from them and get annihilated by insects in my garden. The farmers both rototill the soil. Tilling the soil must just beat the larvae in the ground to death. I am going to try tilling my soil next year. After conversing with the farmers I looked up tilling and squash borers. It should at least control the bugs
@TheBigBlueHouseHomesteadАй бұрын
@inhibited44 I till the soil twice a year. I till in the early spring, and late fall. The squash vine borers aren't a problem. It's the flying bugs that hatch from eggs. I wish you the best with your garden next year. Good luck 💜

Question. Wouldn’t rubbing them off just let them hatch somewhere else? I’ve always thought you have to remove the leaf and BURN THEM!!
@TheBigBlueHouseHomesteadАй бұрын
@926kissthis the way the eggs are layer, the bottoms are open. So when they are rubbed off, it kills them. Plus rubbing them off kinda smashes them too.
