Such a beautifully simple production and it really helped me to understand this aria better. I love how the scene focuses on the love of art. The love she sings about is the love of creating music not romantic love. I love how Hoffman resists because he’s not ready to give up on romantic love yet. I love that Nicklaus wears a wreath to remind the audience that they are the muse. A lot of directors don’t quite know what to do with this aria and what kind of love is being addressed. It’s refreshing to see a production where everyone knows exactly what the message and focus of the aria. It really clarified this aria for me and made it my new favorite. Thank you for posting this and bringing attention to great performances that refresh old classics.

I love Kate Lindsey! This production in particular, I really felt the emotional complexities. The unrequited love (both romantic and artistic), the fear, the pain. This production really captured how a love of art and a love of a person can overlap and conflict. Hoffman was distracted from the music by Octavia but when Nicklaus put on her robe it was a reminder that Octavia also inspired Hoffman’s music. The muse feels abandoned but also takes on the part of the lover and Hoffman comes back because ultimately art is his only true love.

They’re all talented singers but only Nadine Sierra and Elza Van Den Heever can act at all. Matthew Polenzani and Alice Coote weren’t awful in this particular scene because it fits their slightly mopey acting but there was no nuance. No sense that Idomeno is hurt about sending Idamante away, no feeling that Idamante is torn between wanting his father’s approval and staying with Illia. I would have greatly preferred that the Met record the production with Kate Lindsey and Frederica Lombardi, because they are incredible actors in addition to incredible singers. I see new things in the characters they play and they bring the relationships to life.

Pay attention to this fragment at 4:02. It is almost identical to the beginning of "Tutto e tranquillo e placido". Is Mozart telling us that something has happened between Susanna and Cherubino?

The most lesbian version I have seen (nothing wrong with that), Lea is so active whilst singing, only dropped voice when she fell, very Charlie Chaplin inspired movement, fun to watch.

Of the many renditions of this aria that I've watched, this is,for me, definitely above all the rest. Great vocal agility and perception of the role and the score. Many who perform this have fantastic voices but it just isn't the same. My opinion, of course!

Très belle interprétation de Kate Lindsey. Peu de vibrato, une très belle voix de mezzo soprano. Tout pour faire un beau chérubin pour ce mariage de Figaro de notre grand Mozart.

Can anyone help me find video of other times Kate Lindsey has played Cherubino? There was a video of Non So Piu from a Royal Opera performance, but it's not on KZbin now (or at least I can't find it). I know she's performed it often. Any tips on where to find any clips I'd appreciate.

Marvelous singing. Figaro was correct when he called Cherubino, un farfallo amoresso - an amorous butterfly. He does flit from woman to woman - even Marcellina!

She is amazing and adorable!!! But the stage direction is downright creepy and weird. Just let her sing it and act it without the weird activity like dumping the laundry on head or trying to accost Susanna... Let Ms. Crebassa sing!
