Amazingly sung with such feelings of anger, resentment and hurt (while reading the sheet music!). Just brilliant.

I've never seen anyone sing this song so effortless as Adam Pascal. He just belting and carrying those super hight notes like it's just another day at work, it's crazy!
You all heard daryl braithwaites version? Live on telly in Oz...years ago. A demanding song often brings out the best eh?

Do you know if Raul was the singer of the arbiter in the 2008 CD release, Chess The New Musical Cast?
@TimeandMonotony3 жыл бұрын
@@PatricktheRogue If you mean Chess in Concert with Josh Groban, Adam Pascal and Idina Menzel, no, Raul wasn't in that. Marti Pellow was the Arbiter (not one of my favorite Arbiters, personally.) Raul played Freddie in the 2018 Kennedy Center production, though.

@chinweajalla53284 жыл бұрын
The original London version in 1986 had the "35 years on" part. They had a slightly different version the Chess in Concert (2008). The London production was set in present day (circa 1985). The Chess in Concert was set in 1979/1980. Remember Florence was only 5 when the Soviets invaded in 1956. So with an earlier timeline, it makes sense with 25 years on.

In one of the performances Idina Menzel flubbed and sang “35 years” instead.

So much fun to revisit this, can't believe it's been 15 years since a 22 year old Josh Groban sang this role. He was just starting out, but that voice, even then, was so powerful. Thrilled to have been at this performance and to have been a Grobanite from Day 1. Also got to see him again in CHESS at Royal Albert Hall in 2008 for both shows.

hmm "Chess in Concert" with Groban happened in 2008. I kinda doubt the dating of this clip to 2003.

There was a rehearsal for the "one night only" benefit performance at The New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. The Chess concert took place on September 22nd 2003.

Raul and the director have hit on a winning combination here. By eliminating the need for the arbiter to dance, all he has to do is interpret the rapid-fire lyrics, which he now actually has the chance to do. I also like the way Raul knows when to tap into the rhythm and when to throw it away and move at his own pace. It gives it a more natural feeling.

Because in this version it wouldn’t have made sense for Freddie to sing it since he’s the opponent/playing against Anatoly in Endgame.

I don't care for Murray Head (though his One Night in Bangkok remains unsurpassed), but Philip Casnoff's Pity the Child is excellent, though Adam's is better.
