Soldering tips ( from someone who's more recent jobs should disqualify him from giving tips ) :: 1) Even high quality helping hands aren't great, especially for holding the wires still and together. Your wires appeared to be single-core, so twist them together ( ends opposing each other ), they should be semi-firmly locked into each other, so that the helping hands have little more to do than hold them up. If you try this with multi-core wire, this is even better, you can fan out the multiple strands and interleave them before giving them a twist to hold in place. 2) Solder, when it turns to liquid, obeys three rules. It will move towards heat, and it will move towards gravity. It also has a little surface tension. So, bring your soldering iron tip up to the wires from beneath them, and hold it there for half a second, or a second, to get the wire hot first. Then introduce your strand of solder, and as it begins to melt, confidently pull away both the solder and the iron. The idea is that you pull them away before enough solder melts that it overcomes surface tension and becomes a falling blob, its surface tension will then hold it together as it cools along the heat source (the wires). This does take practice to become proficient at, so consider just buying a small spool of wire and doing a few tests runs to get the knack. One you have it, you have it for life... or as I recently discovered, until your eyes start to fail and deceive you, but that's a problem for later. 🙂
