Magari solo uno slow, tutto qui, musicato dal grande Mantovani che amava il nostro Paese: anni in cui l'Italia, modestamente, brillava non solo per il turismo. Bel tempo andato che speriamo torni almeno un po'.

An Italian source, perhaps incorrect (or partially incorrect), indicates Mantovani and Carlo Alberto Rossi as co-authors of the Italian text, and Mantovani as the sole composer of the music. On some labels of FONIT 15104, and FONIT 15749 (song sung by Umberto Da Preda e la sua chitarra ), Manilla - Mantovani - Pittari are listed as authors of “Good-bye Venezia”. * * * Recorded in Milano, c. The most famous song by Eugenio Mignone. At the time of its release it had great popularity and was recorded by some of the most famous interpreters: three times by Daniele Serra, then Gabrè, Miscel, Enzo Fusco, Piero Cluberti and Guido Agnoletti. We also have several instrumental versions. This one is by Lorenzo’s Orchestra a Columbia studio orchestra conducted by Lorenzo Molajoli (1868-1939), well konown in the field of opera. The name “Naja” derives from “Naga” which designated the seven-headed serpent of Hindu mythology. The song’s lyrics, written by Peppino Mendes (Catania, 1892 - Napoli, 1978), tell the dramatic story of a planter who is abandoned by his woman, the mysterious Naja, but is unable to resign himself and meditates revenge... Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, novels (of varying quality) with exotic settings were very widespread in Italy, in particular those by the famous Emilio Salgàri. These novels later inspired many songwriters. * * *

The cover of the nice original score, issued by Mignone’s publishing house, shows a naked woman entwined by a snake. The song was later reissued with a less interesting (and less bold...) cover.

Giuseppe Lagorio, music teacher in Milan, was the author of several fairly successful compositions. In particular, one of his tangos from 1927 “Notturnino veneziano” had considerable popularity also through several recordings not only in Italy, but also abroad. This other tango, “Rose e violette” (1928), did not achieve the same popularity. However, it is documented by some 78 rpm recordings, in both instrumental and sung versions (Grande Orchestra da Ballo dir. by Raffaele Stocchetti, Ines Talamo, Daniele Serra and Aldo Toscanini). * * * Lorenzo’s Orchestra (dir. by Lorenzo Molajoili) * * * “Rose e violette” * * * Music by Giuseppe Lagorio Text by Tomaso De Filippis * * * Recorded in Milano, 1928 * * * mx.

“Il giovanotto matto” : one of the best known and nicest little songs composed by the equally nice pianist (and conductor, presenter, actor, etc.) Lelio Luttazzi, from Trieste. It came out in 1943 and is still widely performed today. After the First World War, as with some other Italian songs of the time, an English version was created, particularly aimed at the large number of American, Canadian and British soldiers present in Italy. * * * Orchestra Cosimo Di Ceglie refrain by Peppino Sacchi * * * “My Bella Signorina” * * * original title : “Il giovanotto matto” * * * Music & original Italian text by Lelio Luttazzi (1923-2010) English text by Deani (pseudonym of Piero Leonardi) (1897-1959) * * * Recorded in Milano, c.
