I thank you Chris Hedges. I never knew Sheldon Wolin before today. I have heard you say his name many, many times. There is a level of enlightenment I gained from this talk. Maybe better to articulate my own arguments. I see that some of the founders fears have come to pass between the ruling class at the time of founding and the ruling class today. It’s what I often express as an anger that the descendants of power do not rule with the same respect and honor. It’s almost as though the people that were born without are more worthy of ruling and it’s the power of capital that permits the unworthy to continue ruling when they no longer have the virtues their ancestors had that allowed them to be the rulers of their time. They are abusive and cruel to their subjects. What’s very scary is I fell asleep and woke listening to this. But while I was sleeping it was Donald Trump that Sheldon, voice coming out of. Hardly close to reality.

Neil Gaiman is the greatest writer of our time. It's a shame we allow attention-starved liars to drag his reputation through the mud, but real ones believe Neil and know better than to trust petty nobodies with victim complexes.

To state a few facts: Capitalism and the United States WON the Cold War while the Soviet Union disintegrated under its own weight without a single shot being fired; Socialism is the obsolete ideology that failed miserably in Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Grenada, Vietnam, North Korea, East Germany, Yugoslavia, Libya, Sri Lanka, Chile, Hungary, Nicaragua, Poland, El Salvador, Mozambique, Romania, Honduras, Mongolia, Bolivia, Afghanistan, Angola, China (which has been Capitalist in everything but name since the economic reforms of 1964 by Deng Xiaoping), Russia (of course), and everywhere else it has been tried. Capitalism continues to be the best and only option while Socialism continues to be the worst, the most failed and most lethal after having caused at least 120 million deaths in less than 90 years which would translate in more than 1 million deaths per year. BTW, how come reds keep bitching about American "imperialism" but never mention Chinese imperialism in Vietnam or North Korea? Or Soviet imperialism in Afghanistan, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, East Germany or Yugoslavia? Or Cuban imperialism in Angola, Mozambique, Grenada, Nicaragua or Venezuela? Or Yugoslav imperialism in Albania? And let's finish with the Socialist prayer: If it's a Socialist atrocity, it never happened If it happened, it wasn't that bad If it was that bad, they deserved it If they didn't deserve it, mistakes might have been made If mistakes were made, that wasn't real socialism.

I think no one normal will argue that “socialism” a la Soviet Union or North Korea style is something worth emulating. However, the disgusting nature of their imperialism and millions of their victims, do not negate the significant failures of American foreign policy in places such as Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. But abstracting away from such comparisons, the point, I think, is that there are varying gradients of capitalism and the current one is a significant departure from the capitalism in the U.S. following WWII to a great detriment of large sections of the U.S. population.

That's been the glitch as humans, we think quite on the order of needing time to mull over those items that require minimum amounts of entertaining quite the challenging of the implications of reaching goals that indicate we aren't in the fields harvesting or physically participating in time consuming activities that are absolutely mandatory just after having gained such power. Powers that be, right now, are being shaped Imperially, for positive influence for a few minority members who having gained some black rights power, but as for women, also that they are deemed as a group in a black misleadership class of their own, by their own. Is it due to the nature of politics?? Or is it like Revisionists dilemma that comes to being seen as those who seek to more accurately retell facts to correct some of the inexact terms, but also deemed as a part of those now as seeking truth, but accused of being bought off by their 'now 'fellow'members??and seeing them more as more negatives, wow, 3rd rail is right. An excellent in depth interview with Sheldon Wolin, political philosopher at one of the elite US universities & author of ‘Inverted Totalitarianism’ - totalitarian control of governments & whole populations in the West via behemoth corporations ( whose majority shares are controlled & owned by a handful of plutocrats, although the media & academy have brainwashed the masses to believe that they are democratically owned via pension funds)

Thank you! I wish everyone arguing about the left and right in our governance would listen to this and gain an understanding of how we're getting manipulated, divided, played, and why. Politics are LOCAL, get to work on elevating a farm team of new, younger, uncorrupted candidates without ties to self-interested power brokers. Then, once elected, continue to keep an eye on how they vote on legislation, challenge them for explanations if it deviates from what they said they represented, and who funds their future re-election campaigns. D or R and trending buzzwords can not be the entirety of our reasons for supporting them.

Republics are not episodic unless it is interfered with by a democracy subverting law order and justice
@magoollaful
@magoollaful 2 ай бұрын
Name one republic that hasn't been "episodic". Maybe people should understand that capitalism is an economic system and democracy is a social system. The "republic" is simply the institutionalized social contract that forms the nation state. If wealth itself, as the source of power, overwhelms and dominates in its own interest over the needs of the majority of the people being governed, it will always result in the failure of that system. Once the dominated become exploited and belabored beyond tolerance, their agreement to participate in upholding an unbalanced and corrupted system becomes self destructive. The contract is broken by those in power long before revolution becomes the only solution to dealing with it. It's not the attempt of the more vulnerable (typically meaning poorer) to demand a rebalancing of the system. It's the self-serving hubris of those in their self-asserted entitlement to control and oppress the masses for their own interests alone.

@alexb9597
@alexb9597 2 ай бұрын
@ The point isn’t about reallocating wealth, not in Thai discussion, rather it’s the critique of capital changing the nature of government. Nothing clickbait about it, we don’t live in a democracy but a constitutional republic. So the question is about the ideal of democracy, which is representation and participation being coexistent in a neoliberal, but more broadly capital economy. There’s nothing clickbait in that question or in the title, it’s a real philosophical and political question to be asked.
@DeecentAnimal
@DeecentAnimal 2 ай бұрын
@ I never said anything about America not being a constitutional republic , i thought the video said democracy.. so are you saying capital changes constitutional republics? Things only change when goal posts are moved or new carve outs are given, so no capital doesn’t change democracy? How do you have a democracy without capital? What am I missing?
@alexb9597
@alexb9597 2 ай бұрын
@@DeecentAnimal I know you didn’t say anything about the United States I’m just saying that’s the question that was ushered in. But yes capital changes democracy because it hasn’t existed yet, at all. Every democracy has crumbled from its own hegemony. So the question here is applying to the US is can the ideal of democracy exist in a for profit, capital economy. Democracy as a ideal is the socialist proghtive, and in history capital has stood against workers rights and strikes. As a philosophy they do not go hand in hand because capital is against workers participation and representation. It’s a economic question and perhaps the closest we’ve been is Kaynesian economic period and FDRs green new deal which created jobs and stimulated the economy when the market wasn’t creating jobs

This guy warps so much history to fit his misguided view of government and society. Koch brothers bought the Republican Party or that there isn’t enough time for normal Americans to vote in elections. His admiration of Marx is equally concerning as if he observed any history he would have come to the only conclusion that pure communism will never exist and that it is a failed model.
@alexb9597
@alexb9597 2 ай бұрын
Marx was a socialist, his economic model is the best at predicting the market. You can appreciate Marx without being a marxist. You speak in the linguistic language of the red scare. And yes Koch lobbyists bought the Republican Party in the sense of lobby leverage, they’re a oligarchal power after all
@davidschock9952
@davidschock9952 2 ай бұрын
@ As normal when a liberal replies it contains insults. Koch brothers did not buy anything, Marx political theory was a complete failure, normal Americans can vote easily, and I speculate that our professor never had a position outside of academia. The professor either does not have much understanding of history or chooses to misinterpret much of it. It was painful at times watching it.
@alexb9597
@alexb9597 2 ай бұрын
@ No one insulted you, I’m not a liberal, thanks for that insult. Marx’s economic philosophy was not a failure as it’s used in the highest positions of wall street analysts. Koch brothers did buy the Republican Party via the lobby, as they control Super PACs. You can vote but we have a constitutional republic, or a representative “democracy” so your vote works as a strategic Vote, not a moral vote. That’s how it was envisioned by the writers of the federalist papers. This professor was a WWII veteran and clearly is politically fluent in the history of politics.
@davidschock9952
@davidschock9952 2 ай бұрын
@ You didn’t watch the video? His liberal interpretation of reality is laughable. While, he is obviously an intelligent man but is twisting reality to fit his model. As far as insults calling my comments as jingoistic is an insult that anyone can see. It is an attack on the source to discredit by false judgement. I am done with you and I am quite sure that we cancel each other’s votes.
@alexb9597
@alexb9597 2 ай бұрын
@ Well I’m glad of your surety, you called me a liberal, not the professor. Not once did I call you jingoistic, I said you speak in the language of the red scare. That’s not a attack, that’s just the words you used, Linguistics and pedigrees of nationalism are very different. Assuming you respond, we don’t cancel each other out, that’s exactly what this professor was talking about. This is a language of fractionalization. I understand why you voted the way you did, assuming by your previous comment that you think I vote blue. So I assume you vote red and I understand why. Anyways thanks for this discourse.

These two are tripping over themselves to avoid the elephant in the room! And that would be the consolidation of cash, especially by a specific group, enabled by the takeover of the Treasury Department by the unFederal Reserve. The consequences of this is a diversion between apparent power and actual power, which ends in a collapse caused by its own weight!
