A buddy of mine is a long time pro guitar tech and freely admits that he's happy to fit a PIO cap when it has the room in the guitar to do so and charge accordingly. He claims he has yet to see anyone really hear any difference and he has a selector board setup with a group of caps that he can switch back and forth to, if a difference is noticed it's due to the PIO cap value drifting due to age or manufacturing standards, and bear in mind that PIO caps have a finite life. He has challenged any number of pro guitarists to pick which cap is being used and is adamant that nobody has done so consistently. I have a box of various value Russian PIO caps and have yet to bother putting them in a guitar, but they look cool and evoke the vintage vibe! BTW I don't want to discourage anyone from fitting pio caps, just don't pay too much money for them!

All caps have a tolerance and that is what you hear the difference between the actual capacitance, no too caps even of the same manufacture and written value are exactly the same. These capacitor myths need to go away and people need to be educated.

Made the same testing with a vitamin q NOS 022 using alligator clips I was able A/B them very easily. Test last for maybe less than 2 minutes so obvious the supremacy of the Sprague was. It's like the difference between a toy and a real thing also easier to perceive in person rather than on a video. It's like having more frequencies response...more treble more bass...more of everything. also when your own hand is turning the knob you really have the feeling of how good a PIO is compared to an orange drop.

There seems a sound signature difference between the two types of caps. Hearing memory is short and not detail, so may be it is only my subjective opinion. Despite the price of different types, it is definitely not a pass or fail selection, only a taste and privilege of possessing some vintage. However, a leakage test shows some old caps are bad in figure, but still some people prefer them. So audio stuff is interesting.... just like having a relationship with your girlfriend/wife.... By the way, snake oil is everywhere..... someone still need to earn your hard earn money.

In the digital world of recording,you will find that there's something about walking away from a project that you think is done to find out that you can't seem to understand what you were thinking when you listen the next day. This is a different kind of problem. I'm outside my expertise as I don't repair amps but the cap trap conversation has it's merit! It's functionality is the quality of its filtering so you're looking at a scope and if gain is tight the Orange drop looks better but that may reduce the harmonic content. It seems that the mistakes sometimes make the amp. It is a meserabl thing but more likely to show up with a professional waterfall analysis than on a scope. Or just try and find out what week of 1966 fender ran out of .22if and .33uf instead. With a tolerance of 30% would it matter? Orange drops leak less also so pick a poison!

Had a few auto wah env filters and find the snow white very well behaved, slightly more compressed so easier to control in a mix. Qtron sounds great but lots of peaks and troughs with bass treble volume etc. Both dynamic but I found the snow white is easier to control with playing dynamics. I can set the snow white to trigger on bridge pick up and nit trigger on neck so I can almost turn it on and off using pickup selector ! Very underrated.

They sound so similar in tgis demo. Problem i have with the snow white is sometimes it sounds amazing and other times going through certain amps or volumes it has a very mild effect and I dont know wether or not I can use it at a gig/jam till i start pla. I have a autowah on my zoom multi effects pedal that sounds good but not as good as the snow white but the zoom never fails me. I haven’t tried your snow white settings. Maybe thats the answer. Im thinking of trading it for a qtron because i dont like how inconsistent the SW is.
@trenchy89062 жыл бұрын
From experience if you find a good setting on the snow white take a picture or mark it with tape. It can be hard to dial in. I found a few different usable settings with it but I forgot to mark them down so it was lost switching between the different tones

Also alway put the snowwhite first in the chain
@thisisme48582 жыл бұрын
@@trenchy8906 yea I do put it first in the chain. Yea I found a good setting that i took a photo of and it probably works 70% of the time on different amps but sometimes it sounds really mild. I want to set and forgot im not into messing around with all the different knobs all the time. If i got a qtron who knows I may have the same issue. I got into auto wahs because im a huge Jerry fan. Im not picky with my pedal sounds as long as they put me in the ballpark of what I want to hear then im satisfied but its strange how it seems to behave drastically different on different volume/amps. I may trade it in for the new qtron nano with the volume control and if it turns out iv made a mistake then no biggie il just get a snow white again. Still i think there’s something im doing drastically wrong as apposed to blaming the pedal.

Totally useless demo! The 50s wiring affects the operation of the volume pot! If you keep your volume pot at 10, modern and 50s wiring are electronically the same! You should do it again varying the volume pot setting, not the tone pot!
@s.millington15125 күн бұрын
Absolutely right. The change at the volume pot is where the difference happens. The demo fails to show this because he never changes the volume. Also,...the change made in the tone pot wiring is pointless, irrelevant and unnecessary.

Take a multimeter and measure the paper in oil. First of all there is a wopping 10 percent deficiency when it was brand new meaning it could have been anywhere between 0.019 and 0.024 and further more they don't retain that value for very long which is why nobody is using them anymore. So yeah, take a multimeter and check the real value of that paper in oil than get a ceramic equivalent of said value and redo the test.

The capacitance of a capacitor is what you measure with a good capacitance meter, not the numbers written on its body. The small tone differences are due to the tolerance of the capacitors compared. Do not fool yourself. Capacitors do not have tone and earth is no flat.
@josezakany78083 жыл бұрын
There is definitely more difference than the capacitance. Some tone caps are very muddy and dead and other allow the sound to morph into something wonderful. This has been seen for decades with the old Bumblebees. You can see this effect most strong at the setting of Zero. Good tone caps create a beautiful "woman tone" regular capacitors crate mud. Instead of denying because you believe it impossible realize the the difference can be heard and we should look to see why this is so. Perhaps the orange drops, being solid state filter a wide band of sound where the paper in oil allow certain frequencies through the oil liquid.
