His Head lamp was based on a Sealed Beam Unit made by General Electric in America Called the GE 4547. It was powered by a 4.75 volt battery. John Darling Used to be a professional Rabbit Shooter and would shoot up to 1000 rabbits in a season, until he broke his leg. He used a Feinwerkbau 127 in .22 also a Weihrauch HW 35 / Weihrauch HW80 in .22. Thank you so much for posting/making these video's. Mr Steve Cowper. I'm in my 60's now. I still have some of my Air Gun World Magazines.

Well said. When I was in my final training as a paramedic, I had a lesson on gunshot wounds from a Thoracic Surgeon who had treated over 300 of them in Iran. A few days later I got the practical... a child who had been accidentally shot with an Air Rifle by his best friend. Five surgeons worked on the boy in the next 48 hours. He then spent three weeks in ITU, his parents never leaving his side. His life couldn't be saved. A boy, his family, his friend and his family, all destroyed because a pellet had just been forgotten and left in the rifle.

In the basic briefing, that gentleman said a lot of sensible things about that technology. But he also left out the absolute most important thing: NEVER fire a piston airgun without a pellet !! (NEVER Dry Shoot).

@DrAgan_tortojed Absolutely! I am 46 years old now, and I can remember reading the articles by John Darling,Terry Doe,Jack Stanton, and James Marchington, among others,as if it were yesterday. I remember one by Mr Stanton in particular, it was titled, "Copse and robbers",where he was hunting for magpies! It is truly unbelievable how quickly over 30 years have passed. My kindest regards, and best wishes to you.

I still have his book which I first read over 30 years ago. As a retired Game Ranger and author of 3 books on wildlife conservation in South Africa, I must say that listening to John in these videos, confirms my initial opinion. He was an ethical hunter with a deep empathy, knowledge and respect for the quarry. His understanding of the environment and its conservation was beyond reproach and he was an excellent marksman. Airguns have progressed in leaps and bounds since his hey day. However, IMO the ethics of airgun hunting per se has retrogressed. Seems it's more about power, slugs the "pop" and exploding feathers and flesh at nonsensical ranges, where wounding or maiming inevitably occurs. So, coming from someone who spent everyday of his working life with a .416 Rigby or .458 Win mag in the Land Cruiser or over my shoulder, I have this to say... Good on you Brits with your sub 12fpe limit. Its taught you to place your shots carefully at sensible ranges. Something l'm sure John would've been proud of. RIP

Thank you so much for uploading and sharing this footage, I found it by accident. I was early teens when these two genius gentlemen were producing these fantastic air rifles. I absolutely longed to own, use, look after, and adore either a Theoben Rapid or one of Theoben's gas ram air rifles. Having a magazine and cocking lever I saw as so much better than the fumble of locating and loading each pellet. However, I didn't have a hope. The closest I came was to look at pictures in my dad's Airgun World when he was at work, replacing it exactly as I found it. Even back then, as a youngster, I just adored the quality of their deep blueing and the gorgeous contours of their Arican Hyedua gunstocks. It's so nice to see who these gentlemen were and place a face to the absolute genius they produced. Being an eighties child, we had to be seen and not heard. I hadn't a hope of owning my own air rifle and owning my woodworking tools, something I also so much wanted to do. Now, obviously much older, my loved father passed, I have air rifles and tools. I've made a couple of air rifle gunstocks to replace the purchased ones, as I humbly thought they weren't worthy of the actions they carried. My brief was to make them with hand tools to prove it could be done. They obviously aren't Minelli, made with precision lazer cutting machinery, but I spent a lot of time on them and mean so much to me and part of my shooting journey that eventually began. Thank you again. Ps. There is an example on Utube of a Theoben SLR98 in a Gin B gunstock. SLR meaning self loading rifle. It's an underlever and on cocking, indexes each of the pellets from the seven shot magazine. It is an absolutely beautiful, beautiful air rifle.

Thanks for the comments Ian. I figured rather than just leaving these programmes to be lost in the mists of time, the airgunning community might welcome reliving past memories. @CowperMediaTV Hi Steve, Thank you very much for your reply and for giving people like me the opportunity to see these videos. It certainly turns the clock back. I think of those times as being the day before yesterday. However, when reckoned up, obviously much more. I know my dad liked John Darling from the odd conversation and Terry Doe, too. It's nice to know, though, that many of those air rifles are used and loved today as they were back then. Their quality and craftsmanship has stood the test of time. It also brought back other memories, too, that weren't particularly great. I'm just glad I am where I am now and enjoying shooting air rifles I once dreamed of, though I thought I wasn't worthy or sensible enough to own what I always longed and wished for. Thank you again, Steve, and best wishes. This was a really nice find today.
