Thank you for sharing this. It shows humility and pay no attention to the peanut gallery tossing inappropriately harsh comment. The rest of us benefit greatly from seeing this. Beginner question: would it not make sense to "toss" your bow to starboard a bit more while you're still moving forward just before engaging hard reverse and let prop walk continue the rotation into the slip?
@sailingin-tuitionwithchuck19 күн бұрын
It would have and I do, sometimes. The moral of this story is pay attention before you get into a situation. I did not do that in this video. Bad situational awareness. I wasn't paying attention to wind and current. Both were off my starboard and push me too far to port. Thanks for watching and your encouraging commitment!

Nice video. I just moved my Cal 33 to the Chesapeake from NJ, but not getting out much. Your video reminds me that I need to make up for it the 2nd half of the season! Read your summary... funny how we parallel. I started with a Snark Sunflower 40 years ago. Then no sailing for about 15 years while having kids and going back to school, then got a Buccaneer. (really learned to sail then!) but yeah it scared the family too much! Raced that for several years then slowly moved up in boats, now the Cal. -Jim (sailing out of Rock Hall)

I think your wind speed indicator needs a check. Roughly 40 knots app wind minus the 5 knots boat speed is 35 knots. Here in NW Europe, 35 knots on open water looks and feels different!. White tops on the water, waves lifting the yacht up. Breaking waves even. And even without a sail, more inclination: the wind pushes the hull of the boat. This current reading on your NavTech(?) screen gives you more worries than it should!
@sailingin-tuitionwithchuckАй бұрын
This was a 5 hour trip and I had a few minutes of video. The chart plotter was showing apparent wind and I was making about 4 knots. The wind I think was off the starboard bow. So back out 3 or 3.5 knots. At the time of this video I think wind was bouncing around 28 to 30 knots, as I said in the video. The chart plotter pic was taken much later. I showed the plotter Pic just to show that I was mistaken about the storm subsiding.

My previous boat was a catalina 27 with hanked on jib and no lazy Jack's for main. In mast furling is such an improvement. And infinite reefING points. I typically furl mainsail to keep boat at about 15 degrees of heel. Such a convenience and saftey feature
@mennovanrij9334Ай бұрын
Nice and easy does it! I love to see that you walk around to the other side of the wheel when you're in reverse. So many people 'forget' that. This is textbook (well, in my book...) This walk-around move makes it all so much easier. I guess I would use the clamp on the dock (near the neighbouring boat) as a marker: "When the stern is aligned with the clamp, I have xxxxxft before I need to switch the throttle/gear forward."

I remember my first encounter with the Atlantic very well. Coming off the French coast, crossing the North Sea above the English Channel to England and then following the shoreline until you come 'around the corner'... It was in July and the weather had been great for weeks. Despite that, I was overwhelmed by the size of the waves! It took me a while to realize that a yacht is lifted by the waves, like swans on the waves of a lake.
