Mes Chères Amies: C'est moi, René: I had enjoyed participating in and taking in the deeply insightful, resolutely detailed, and often poignant analysis by you both and many of the Teapot's contributors regarding New Amsterdam in particular. In truth, I found the production team's inability to convince Freema to stay in some capacity, even if in guest-starring roles, the death-knell for the series. I did not even bother watching the final season, except for the last few minutes of the series finale. It did not help that the show's production team knew in the penultimate season that Freema would leave after completing it. The reasons are manifest and too numerous to list here at this time, save for these points: 1. Freema and Ryan, Helen and Max, were the dramatic and allegorical core of the entire show. As good as the ensemble cast was, they reacted to and evolved within the New Amsterdam World that emanated from Helen's dazzling intellectual mastery and cultural brilliance and Max's idealism and aspirational ambition and the incandescent love between Helen and Max 2. The chemistry -- erotic, intellectual, spiritual, all of it-- between Helen and Max, Freema and Ryan resonated from an entirely unique space, and the allegorical power of it in the face of such Right-wing, anti-democratic, and deeply racist phenomena as Trumpism or Brexit elevated the entire show from a mere worldwide hit to a work of popular art as a cultural, social phenomenon. 3. Freema. She's the heart of it all. The show producers meant to create a run-of-the-mill "White Savoir" vehicle centered on Max/Ryan, but it was and will always be Freema/Helen who is the absolute centre of the show: it is SHE, Helen, who transform's Max's perspectives from "savior" to partner, from "ally" to follower; and it is SHE, Freema, who not so much as dragged Ryan from the very good actor he is into something better but rather inspired the dependable, charismatic Ryan into excellence, giving us a Max who was brave, absurd, inspiring, heedless, resolute, comical, poignant, powerful. We could laugh at Max's Million-Idea march straight into Helen's office, always Helen's office, but at the same time, we can absolutely understand it: OF COURSE, he was deeply and utterly in love with her, and she was the Source, the Light, the Way for bringing about the New Amsterdam of allegory and reality. I will not comment on Helen and Max's adventure in Britain, other than to repeat that however "older" lower Manhattan appears to American eyes, this former Manhattanite who spent his childhood growing up in Britain resolutely states the irrefutable fact: Lower Manhattan simply exits within and as another architectural universe than that of London, let alone of the wholly separate universe of history, politics, cultures, and society. It goes without saying that the producers' ending of the penultimate season with Helen jilting Max is as utterly ridiculous as their substituting Lower Manhattan for London location shooting: a woman who loves a man so deeply as Helen loves (present tense) Max to the point of not just risking her life but of her giving of her body and soul to saving, indeed resurrecting his, Max's body and soul, that woman would NEVER, EVER jilt that man on the day of their impending wedding. It is an artistic and series production failure so staggering that it literally killed the series: no Helen, no New Amsterdam. My final comments on the matter come to this: had the show's writers remained true to who and what Freema had so brilliantly unleashed and that to which Ryan so intuitively responded, they would, I argue, have made the "surprise ending" thus: the young woman doctor who turns out to be the adult Luna, taking up her father's legacy, would, in her series-ending speech before the assembled doctors, have then introduced two young women doctors as her co-leaders of New Amsterdam. These young women would turn out to be her two half-sisters by Helen and Max: such a denouement would allude to how Helen resolved her crisis of choice when running the London clinic: instead of the traditional, patriarchal dictatorship model of one sole director, Helen chose all of her leading candidates as a body of leaders, each representing some part of London's diverse society. Therefore, in Luna and her two half sisters running the New Amsterdam, we would see that Helen's transformational, democratic vision of London as a "family" would live on through her own daughters and adopted daughters: New Amsterdam's legacy of reconciliation, transformation, and community/family would be that of both Helen and Max in blood, culture, and ideals. I argue that such a denouement would have delivered more of the "surprise" while restoring the singularity of Helen and Max to the New Amsterdam world: 1. It would confirm that Helen and Max became, after all that is said and done, only who could be for each other: intimate, world-changing life partners. 2. It would confirm that the "New" Amsterdam legacy as it really is: an allegorical universe transformed by Helen's and Max's vision for a better world and love for each other. 3. It would embody what the allegorical power of Helen in that legacy has always been: Helen Sharpe, Transformer, Redeemer, and Uniter. 4. It would logically, morally, and artistically restore to the New Amsterdam show's own legacy "Les Trois Unités" of drama -- unity of action, unity of place, and unity of time -- upon which all enduring world drama, the European, African, Asian dramatic traditions, for example --all strikingly adhere to and embody. 5. It would evoke what Helen and Max/Freema and Ryan achieved for and during their partnership throughout the show's run: the power of transformation, The Crossing, as it were. So, in making my after-the-flood arguments, I conclude by sending you both -- and the entire Purple Teapot ( how I LOVE that riff and spliff!) fam -- my warmest regards, greetings, and well wishes. And I look forward to following you, the Purple fam, and following up, as it always is both a pleasure and moments of illumination participating in, listening to, and taking in the Purple Teapot's "moveable feast."

As always, your reviews are onpoint. Sorry, but i never liked the character of Iggy. I found him to be the worst kind of therapist. He is very manipulative on so many levels. The therapist who clearly needs a therapist. Many times he tried to include his issues with his own father onto some of his patients. When Lauren tried to call him on his eating disorder, he lashed back at her by calling her a drug addict. What kind of therapist lashes back at his patients? He does more talking than listening. Most patients clearly have mental health or emotional issues, and after one stalker who couldn't let go; it became apparently clear that Iggy's method of treatment of getting too emotionally involved was problematic to some of the more severe cases...detrimental even. Yet, when one of his own resident psychologist was able to process the death of one of her patients in a less emotional way, Iggy probed her to the point of causing her to break down and cry. She was in the right frame of mind in how she processed her patient's and her own feelings. Iggy manipulates; he will even lie to a patient if he thinks the means justifies the end...right down to his own emotional infidelity. Martin is by far much more mentally and emotionally stable. If i had a child, i would not let Iggy come near my child with a 10ft pole. There were so many scenes with Iggy that i had to simply fast forward. Children should not be exposed.

I agree, I’m not sure if he changed during the end but I’m guessing not he always deflected. His character is of someone who became a therapist to escape their own problems and then started using it to deflect when people ask him about himself. Martin and the kids deserved better

It does make perfect sense when Helen said, " I should have never let you in". Firstly, it must have been very disappointing when he confessed that his whole day was out of sorts as was hers. Helen had good reason, she had spent the early part of the day, getting Mina off, and the remaining day in a cancer center with her mom, both anticipating the worse. Secondly, she spent hours on the plane between two pasengers in a seat that did not recline. Thirdly, she unexpectedly bumps into Max near the elevator, clearly excited to see him, sharing their trying and stressful day; thinking something terrible happened on both ends, only to find out, Max's stressful day was due to the fact that he lost his wedding ring. If someone had said that Max would screw it up, i would have said, how could he possibly screw it up? They already confessed that they have been fantasizing about the next step in their friendship. Wow, leave it to Max to admit that he was frantic all day because he lost his wedding ring, and to show such relief when he finally found it. Then, to babble on like a babbling idiot about her Mum. Seriously, Sharpe's facial expression said it all, and she vocalized it, "maybe too much has been said already", and she did the right thing; she turned around and walked away. Did Max expect to share her bed with the memory of his dead wife; clearly, he was not ready to move on, so she thought. No doubt, knowing Helen, she prepared for this encounter with him. Probably bought some new lingerie; had her legs waxed, etc...figured they would go to dinner, and afterwards holding hands while going for a moonlit walk as they head back to her place for some wine, etc. BUT, Max ruined the moment when he brought his ring into the mix. THEN, he asked if he could walk with her; we don't have to talk...good thing too! While walking with him, she gave him every opportunity to take hold of her hand, apologize for acting like an idiot; hold her in his arms, anything! She even stops along the way. Then, he walks her straight up to her door expecting her to invite him in. Not a chance! The next move is on you Max Goodwin. Helen wasn't about to at this point. In fact, she's probably thinking to herself, holding back the tears; Max's is still not ready, and I (Helen) won't have Georgia's ghost sleeping in bed with her and Max. At this point, she's thinking, London is looking pretty good right about now. She's probably hurt and quite frustrated, after spending the entire day fantasizing about her and Max. Helen was right to have doubts at this point. Although, Max redeems himself a little by almost banging her door down, and breathlessly pushing his way in to her home, standing in front of her, drinking in her beauty, and her lips, feeling her desire as well as his own. Lastly, this is the moment they both have been waiting for, and yet no doubt Helen is probably conflicted, but those baby blues have captured her heart. BUT, after they consummate their relationship, reality sets in, and she's remembering what transpired earlier. H: "I should have never let you in". She knows she loves him, but she's not sure he love her in the same way. Is it simply physical? What question is she really asking? Should she have let him in her heart in the first place? Or, should she have let him in her place? They have now crossed the line of friends to lovers. Things have just become a lot more complicated, scarey and exciting! These two powerhouses are in deep.

Iggy gets on my nerves. He is the most troubled therapist. He has more problems than his patients. He gets offended easily especially when someone calls him on something. He has a way of using his knowledge to impose his own viewpoint on crucial matters, especially if someone has an opposing viewpoint. He certainly is not an impartial therapist. Martin, on the other hand, is a good person, who has to put up with Iggy's narcissisim. I will comment on Sharpwin later.

Yeess babe. Exactly. Freema's always exceptional. It's the same navigating US white centrist locations. Trish and Mel are opposites in so many ways. What I liked is each character has its own dilemma. Without that depth it's soapy and subliminal.

Your assesment's on the NA episodes and storylines are always on point! This whole New Amsterdam series was so off-base at times, because it cared more about promoting a political liberal left agenda to promote socialism. They didn't care about giving the audience the intricate details of certain segments of the show; not a priority. They were not interested in filling in the gaps. Their cliffhangers were ridiculous!. New Amsterdam was bound to be CANCELLED. I don't blame Freema Agyeman for wanting to leave at the end of Season 4. Isn't interesting how her character went from being confident and fearless, to being scared and unsure. Firstly, in terms of the engagement, I can tell you right now, if I had dreamed all my life to have a fairytale wedding, and the time finally arrives when the man I have fallen in love with proposes to me, and I begin to make wedding preparations for my fairytale wedding in a castle, (STOP, bring in the "woke" writers who think they can write about the black experience) and they decide to include my mean-spirited mother to go along with me to share in this experience, hoping she will finally be happy for me (Helen), only to be utterly discouraged; simply because the writers believe that my mean-spirited mother's is still HUNG UP on SLAVERY! Her inability to let go of the past, would NOT spoil my day, nor discourage me from pursuing my dream wedding. I would drive her home, and continue with the preparations by myself or with a close friend. A country where Helen has a history, yet we never see her with ONE close friend in London. Further, my mother would be invited to my special day, with these words: please come if you want to come and share in our joy or don't come if you can't muster up a smile, or, at least pretend to be happy for us. Do they really believe that we black people have to stay chained to a past (slavery), that most of us did not experience; (Wokeness seems to think so) or are we free to let go of the past (that MOST of us living today did not experience the harsh realities), FORGIVE our enemies (as the WORD of GOD says we must do), and move on to live more fruitful and productive lives. If I want a fairytale wedding in a castle (yes, built by slaves), then so be it. The fact that the slaves built the castles, and yes, the churches too, shall we not get married in churches either? How ridiculous! The writers made Helen's mother out to be this angry, bitter, mean-spirited, woman, who didn't own a pretty dress, or a decent bright colored sweater, but they kept her impoverished looking, like she didn't own a tube of lipstick in this present day and age, (Give us a 'DAM' break! Pun intended) and never went to a hair salon in her life. A mother who could not be happy for her only daughter's incredible achievements, and amazing success as Chair of Hematology and Oncology, and later the Deputy Medical Director at New Amsterdam Medical Center, top tv personality (Dr. Helen) at New Amsterdam, who lived in a huge posh flat in New York. (Loved her apartment!). All they focused on was this angry black woman bitterly discouraging her successful daughter/doctor (who worked hard to get to this level of success) vexing her spirit so much that she literally had to tell her mother to SHUT UP. FINALLY! Family or not, toxic people need to be told to simply shut up. Then, to have Max come back (after Helen walked out of the restaurant) and defend this woman to Helen who knows all too well how this woman feels about white people, muslims, Mina, etc... Dr. Helen Sharpe was a perfect example of how things have changed for the better. Success is achievable if you are willing to work hard, and make a conscious effort to press forward despite the setbacks, racial, economic or otherwise. Stop thinking the world owes us something; you'll end up like Helen's mother: bitter and alone. No one ever said LIFE is fair. You owe yourself something. Make it happen through hard work, FAITH, and dedication. They should have called it New AmsterDAMN! DAMN that "Woe is me" mentality. It didn't surprise me that they never once showed a positive thing about Helen's mother. It would not fit the narrative they promoted throughout the series. Further, a parent who was as negative and bitter would have certainly vexed a child's spirit growing up, YET, Helen was the total opposite; she was full of life, laughter and love; still trying to receive her mother's approval, but never receiving it. Why? Because 'Woke Culture' believe that we black people, like Helen's mother should remain with a 'slave mentality'; still impoverished, who didn't own a single pretty dress (as did her successful daughter) in her closet, or a chic purse and shoes, despite her own daughter's success. The Liberal Left ideology was all over this show. Then, they wanted us to believe that it was wrong of Helen to marry Max in a castle, so instead let's have her get married on the rooftop of of the DAM(n), where they would escape to get away from all the chaos. CLEARLY NOT the dream wedding for a woman who has worked so hard, and finally gets to SHARE her life with the man she has fallen in love with, only to be told that she has to settle for a rooftop hospital wedding. Are you freaking KIDDING ME? I would have said no too, even if I changed my my mind on the castle. I'm sorry, but I would not have married on that rooftop, no matter how romantic the writers made it appear. I'm okay with marrying my sweet love in a small ceremony at a smaller venue, with close friends, but no way am I allowing what should be our special wedding day, to just be thrown together, and me rushing to and from the airport to a rooftop wedding at the DAM. Am I sad how the Helen and Max love story ended? YES, because there were so many endings that could have made this lovestory go down in tvland history as one of the greatest lovestories in a medical drama, how they weathered the storms of life, persevered, and ended with their LOVE surviving and Helen giving birth to a baby girl. To quote Max when he said, I want to have a baby with you", not to mention she would be a mini you, friggin adorable (smile). Instead the DAM(n) ended with alot of unanswered questions that THEY never intended to answer because it wasn't relevant to what they were promoting. The last tragic social injustice (and there were many) was what they did to the character of the beautiful, caring, compassionate, articulate, intelligent, successful (and completely in love with Max), Dr. Helen Sharpe. Therefore, because Freema Agyeman/Helen decided to call it quits at the end of Season 4; I made a conscious decision to never watch Season 5. If it is as BAD as many people have stated, it does NOT surprise me at all. Sad on so many levels. Thank you Purple Tea Pot for your thoughts; you are right on point. This series was good in the beginning, but at times was all over the place, ultimately going nowhere. 👩🏽‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏼

I think you call it wrong when said Eve is going to save Bode because she, is not a diver. someone has jumped into the water and that`s Gabby. A few things about your review .1 I disagree there are many friendships but they need to develop and it cannot magical but gradually. develop with time. 2. I agree with Gabriela and Jake they lack chemistry, and connection and are just plain boring in my opinion I rather see her single than with Jake. 3. The character I dislike is Jake because Jordan is playing a character that doesn't suit him and 4. I think from the first ep 1x01 Gabby and Bode form a connection and fans draw in by the instant chemistry between both characters and see they can eventually be something based on friendship and attraction to each other.

Casey was mugged. He mumbled that to Lauren when she found him. The rest of it was a bit confusing for sure. Also, why the hell didn’t Floyd and Lynn discuss Claude declining the job and not moving to Denver. Either Floyd quits and moves with them, Claude and Lynn move with Floyd’s child or Lynn gets an abortion? Give me a damn break. I really wonder if they straight up planned this because they wanted a baby and Claude was impotent.
