Hallo lieber Stefan. Am Samstag den 20. Juli findet das 1. Special der Old Town Devils statt.

Stepan, beautitful place! smiling faces, nice dance area! wish such as available here in our part of the USA! We noticed that a great many of the songs used by the callers in your videos are American based. Any reasons for that? it is not a problem for us, were just curious, when you're dancing in Germany is all. We fell in love with the song Hulapalu when we heard it for our very first time in your video! it is beautiful to dance to!

Stefan, we want to make two more requests, 1) that would be to ask you to visit the food area and show us what foods are provided at these dances and tell us what each item you film is, because we want the entire experience that is happening at these dances, because we love trying different foods, and because we are infatuated with the excitement at these dances your attending! makes us want to jump into the TV screen and join you all! Lol! 2nd) how far are you and some others traveling to attend theses dances? are dancers finding that they have to travel great distances in order to attend a dance? because here in our part of eastern USA, after the covid 19 pandemic, finding a dance to attend is now much more difficult, and often we have to travel an hour or more away from home to attend a dance and then that time back to home .. makes for a long day and perhaps an expensive one! before covid, we could attend a dance 3 times a week and not travel more than 20 or 30 minutes. We are wondering if might be somewhat similar in Germany? danke schön David and Pam

Hello David and Pam, thanks for your comments. I saw them 2 weeks ago, now we are in Vacation in the Netherlands and I’m taking some time to respond. Not sure if you will ever see my response. If so, you can also reply to my e-mail at: [email protected]. It seems we have quite some things in common; I’m also in my early 60s, I love Square Dance and to make new friends during the dances. We have about 600 Square Dance clubs in Germany, at least before Covid19, not all clubs survived so it’s less now. There is the “European Association of American Square Dancing Clubs e.V.“ where every club is part of. Here is a link where you can find a lot of information, every club is listed and also most of the events that are happening: eaasdc.eu/ I’m fortunate to live in Heidelberg where I can be a member of two Square dance Clubs, the Heidelberg Hoedowners (Mainstream Club) and the Swinging Stars (Plus Club). Most of the clubs host one special per year. That is typically on Saturdays from 2 pm to 10pm. There are 80 to 600 dancers. Almost every Saturday I could go to a special if I travel up to 150 miles. Most of the young dancers are 2nd generation square dances that helps to get them in. We have several good callers that also can attract young people. So luckily, we have some young dancers that will (hopefully) keep the tradition. Several of the young dances are organized in the German wide “Lions Club”. You can be an active part of that club only until you are 30 years old. I’m certainly not the expert for the women cloth’s but yes, its quite expensive even higher here in Germany than in the States. Several of the ladies sew the skirts on their own that helps the budget. There is the dress code for the Specials and also for the club nights but its handled rather liberal … and it better be liberal to keep the young people. I’ve never paid attention if the ladies or girls were socks but sometimes they dance even bare foot. Sometimes young guys shop up in shorts. Once an elderly guy asked me: “It that right that these guys come and dance in shorts” I said, “sure it is, I don’t care if they come in long or short pants, I’m just happy that the young guys are there and Square Dance”. In regard to the special moves, you can reduce the speed of the KZbin videos to watch them in slow motion. One hint to the square through and holding hands over the head: don’t cross arms when approaching the partner, its RH to LH hand and LH to RH hand… and then turn, kind of like a California twirl. There are also a couple of great videos from Students that do square dance at the MIT, it’s great to watch and you see young Americans doing square dance and having a lot of fun. Link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJS6fqNnqcihZ5osi=yFA8lLApfwBAKM7s In general, the food in Germany and all over Europe is so divers and tasty. During square dance club nights and specials there are good chances to find all kinds of delicious homemade stuff, in the afternoon with homemade cakes. There is one special club night coming with two American Callers Tod Lizotte and Tony Qxendyne, I know them just from KZbin videos but looking forward very much to dance on their calls Link: www.rodenbacher-square-dancers.de/images/TripleFlyer.pdf Yes, square dance is great, my wife says that I’m addicted to it …. and I guess she is right. It would be great to see you at some time in a square … Stefan

Stefan, my wife and I enjoyed this video and the others from this event! We are square dancers in the USA who are in our early 60s. this is such a happy crowd, we felt we could join right in with all of you! And we would make new friends! and making new friends is an awesome experience! We are really amazed and pleased that so many people show up to dance that you have so many squares!! Wow! we struggle to get 2 or 3 squares! And so many younger people show up! enough to make two squares themselves! Awesome! that is not happening here! and it worries us older dancers. We have some questions for you, and your fellow dancers, and we hope you would consider asking/interviewing the dancers at the dances you attend or anywhere you can talk with them. Questions are: 1) Can you share with us what is being done to attract young people to take square dance lessons and show up to the dances after they graduate? 2) My wife really likes the shirts, / blouses, the woman are wearing! she would like to hear from the woman, their thoughts on the tops they wear and about what the cost for the skirts are in Germany? here in the USA they are very expensive, like $100.00 - $120.00 and more just for the skirt. which is too much money, and then all the clothing items underneath are extra costs. far too much money to have several colors and styles. many women here, including my wife, are looking for ideas of suitable replacements. She would like to hear ideas from German woman and what they are using as substitutions. 3) My wife noticed that it looks as though many women are not wearing socks with their shoes, is this correct? and if true, she would like to know how they are able to tolerate not wearing socks? 4) Stefan, would you make a video with another couple and show us how you do that square through, but keep holding hands over head? Do it in slow motion so we can follow along and duplicate/ practice here at home. because it looks like fun! 5) Stefan, with a dancing partner, would you demonstrate how you do your twirling, during a promenade home call, where when your halfway to your home spot, the girl suddenly goes under your arm, and then you go under hers and then it ends beautifully at home! this is a beautiful maneuver! and my wife and I would like to learn this, would you do a video and do the movements in slow motion, so we can follow along at home. we will greatly appreciate these instructions!! danke schön David and Pam

Stefan, I think it is great, that I could be in this room and dance with all of you! and I don't speak Dutch! A great thing about dancing, whether it is square dancing, waltz dance, and other dances, that people can work together and have a good time! it does have the potential to break down barriers! Shame dance is not used to make peace! I'm curious to know what activities/ sports would be played on this floor/court? The floor markings look somewhat familiar to me, but also, they do not. Lol! I do not see basketball hoops suspended from the ceiling as we have here in the USA. So, from the markings on the floor, what do they indicate to you, what is played in this room? Also, was this recorded on your phone? or a camera? and did you use a tri-pod? and an assistant for this video? It is recorded well!

Hi Flywelder, nice that you like my videos. I don't speak Dutch either. I'm German and the city were we were dancing is Bonn, the former German capital. The caller is Danish and besides his calling in English he is practicing some German. That makes his nice accent. The videos are typically recorded by a Smartphone. Very few with a tripod. most just by hand and this one actually is recorded by using a Gimbel for stabilization. In this case I gave the Smartphone with the gimbel to the dad of my wonderful dance partner. He was sitting at the side of the hall. The hall were we are dancing is multipurpose hall, it's also used for school Physical Education. You are right they play Basket ball, hand ball soccer ... basically all kinds of sports. Enjoy watching my videos ... there are more to come.

Stefan, I really enjoy your videos! I like seeing the excitement in the dancers, and the number of dancers that show up! truly fantastic! And the number of dancers that show up in full dress attire, even for the hot weather times of the year! it is great to see! as we are not seeing that happen, often, here in the USA. I'm in the USA by the way. Your videos are so good, I would like to ask, if you would share with me, what you use to record these? and how do you keep the videos so 'smooth' and not have shaky movements? As I'm seriously considering following your example here in the USA. Thank you.
