Thank you for close up on the hand positions. Is it possible to show simply Chinese folk song tones too?

SW, they sound great but why are they a lot dearer than YKM's Indian small leaf sandalwood? I haven't got the funds yet but I'm interested in YKM's Indian small leaf sandalwood. Btw when I listen to the recording of it, I get a video from another maker.

Hi Edward! Hope you are doing well. It’s a lot dearer cos of the wood and snakeskin involved. The sound is out of this world. Apologies about the YKM Indian small leaf demo. I’ll try to get one up asap. Thanks!

Do you have or recommend a source of online lessons? If so I will make this purchase, as learning to play the erhu is both a dream and intention of mine.

All three sound strong and very bright with good clean over tones. But to me, the best of the three is clearly the first erhu. The second is close but the over tones are ever so slightly harsher and the third has over tones that are a tiny bit harsher still. All three are excellent in the low and mid registers. I don't think there was enough we could hear of the high registers to make a fair judgement. All are very nice and their future owners will have great erhus!

That's a very intelligent review, for a novice like me how can you tell?
@johnNJ4024

@edwardsiu4266 I think the best way to tell the difference is to start listening to ehru music both professional and amateur recordings especially songs that have erhu solos. My favorite artists are Yu Hong Mae (classicly trained in China) and Eliott Tordo (self taught). At first just listen then after a while try to start listening for the low, mid, and high registers. Each register has smooth/mellow tones and a more "buzzy" maybe "tinny" tones that occur in the harmonics. Each erhu, depending on the materials it's made of and how the player sets up the erhu (placement of the felt damper, type of bridge and where it's placed, how they tune the strings, and how they condition the snake skin, the quality of the snake skin also lays a big role in the sound produced) all go into how an instrument will sound. I've been listening to erhu music for about 12+ years. It just takes practice to train yourself to pick out the different sound qualities an erhu produces. I think this goes for just about any instruments. Hope this helps! :)

@ Thanks for the reply. Do you play the erhu? I've already have a Ming Qing Hu Han Ru erhu from Eason, bought 10 years ago when the prices were more favourable. I have this itch that I want to get an Indian sandalwood one. My teacher won't say yes or no. I don't want another Ming Qing erhu. What are your thoughts?

@edwardsiu4266 About 15 years ago I bought a concert grade Ming Qing aged rosewood Suzhou erhu by Wan Qi Xing. I've started and stopped a few times over the years trying to play. There's no one within a 2 to 3 hour drive that could offer erhu lessons so I'm limited to the online instructional videos that Eason Music has on their website. You're right in that the prices of erhus have doubled or tripled over the years and I couldn't afford a concert grade erhu now. Unfortunately, my erhu playing isn't very smooth. I need a lot of bowing practice! I just try to play by ear to get reasonably close to what I think sounds nice. After I retire I plan to spend more time practicing playing my erhu but for the time being it's a few hours a month.

@@edwardsiu4266 I've heard good things about erhus made from Indian sandalwood. Small leaf indian sandalwood is supposed to be absolutely fantastic for making an erhu, but the $5000 to $8000 price tag is a considerable expense. Before buying an indian sandalwood erhu I would do two things: 1) ask your erhu teacher if they think that your playing ability is great enough that the quality of your erhu is not sufficient to allow you to achieve better skills and 2) ask yourself the same question. If both you and your teacher both say yes then I would think that moving up to a higher quality instrument is definitely worth the money. But, if your playing skill has not surpassed the capabilities of your current erhu then I would save your money until your playing skills warrant an upgrade.

Question: I've been having trouble getting the membrane to STAY on, and don't have a teacher to ask, so is there a likely culprit for this issue? I'm not sure if the adhesive it came with is poor quality or if I'm just doing something wrong when I play, but I can't get it to remain in place past a few repetitions of scales, and have resorted to taping down the sides.

Try a lip balm tube type of paper glue stick type glue and cigarette rolling paper. Very thin paper, somewhat like shaved reed paper.

Hello from Luxemburg, Europe ! I am beginner in Erhu playing since the 28th of October 2024. I enjoy to learn every day Erhu lessons. My teacher after one week teaching me Erhu found that the Quanxing was too high for me. He adapted to my hand size and from that time no problem to pitch the right notes.
