If you search our cultural history youll find an amazing number of people who look similar to Dr. Dan. Many reasons for this. First, look up the term "hypo-descent." Also search the terms "slavery conditon of the mother." For quick examples of this look up William and Ellen Craft, Henriette Delille, and Coincoin Metoyer. It wasnt until 2000 that the census made room for people to mark more than one "race." Also, it would be easier if we spoke of ourselves as people of African descent, rather than strictly "black," or "white" since all people of African descent on this side of the world have different degrees of mixture. And as the comedian Trevor Noah reminds folks, even the Motherland produces a variety of hues. Tell your child that Dr. Dan was a man with some black ancestors and some who were not. Also, show him people like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The guitarist Slash of Guns n Roses and his mom, Ola Hudson. The actress Sally Richardson-Whitfield. Or Eartha Kitt's biological daughter, Kitt Shapiro. And you can play him the song "African" by Peter Tosh and get him the kid's book by the same name (illustrated by Rachel Moss) that goes along with it. Blessings

The beginning where they asked the prisoners their childhood dreams was beautiful, brilliant way to rehumanize a group of society that's so heavily demonized. They were all innocent children once who unfortunately were given the short end of the stick, growing up in traumatic situations. Everyone deserves another chance.

I'm a 61 year old Black and I remember as a little boy we would travel to the South (NC, SC & Georgia) during the summer (every summer) to visit my mom and dad's family on both sides and I remember one early evening just before the sun went down, we were driving in the deep South through a town and my mother and father immediately told us to close our eyes because they didn't want us to see it, so I closed my eyes in obedience but then opened them real quick because I didn't want to miss whatever it was and as I turned and looked to the side there was a big white sign written with the word "NO Niggers allowed written in black and "don't be caught when the sun goes down", written in red on this large sign. My parents tried to shield me and my brothers from seeing this hatred but we saw it anyway and had many questions. And so, we had to hurry and get out of that are in hurry. That has always stuck with me from a child. I couldn't have been no older than 7 or 8 but I remember clearly as if it were yesterday.

@@FREEMAN.... During that time the one drop rule was in full effect. His father was biracial and his mother was full black and he was raised in a black community and seen as full black by society that prevented him from having many of the opportunities his white counterparts had which is amazing that he was able to accomplish what he did during that time. The facts you speak of were within the context of a different society. It doesn't matter what he looked like because he was seen and treated as being BLACK. The same WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE STATED: "When Williams graduated from what is today Northwestern University Medical School, he opened a private practice where his patients were white and black. Black doctors, however, were not allowed to work in America's private hospitals. As a result, in 1891, Williams founded the Provident Hospital, which also provided a training residency for doctors and training school for nurses in Chicago. This was established mostly for the benefit of African-American residents, to increase their accessibility to health care, but its staff and patients were integrated from the start." As you can see the facts are within the context of a certain time. The best way to view history is as accurate as you can is by taking in the reality of that time as much as you can and not seeing from the lense of your time.

@FREEMAN.... You realize there's a reason no one in academia accept w1ik1ped1a as a source right? There is actually zero evidence of what you claim about his mother. The Source WP sites to make the claim, while it makes the claim indeed, does not provide any actual evidence of what is claimed by the source. Thay is one of the tricks WP uses to get pr0pagand@ into articles, citing sources that count as a source, but that provide no evidence themselves

Would like to see more "black" Scientists, Esquires (lawyers), Builders and Surgeons less GD entertainers, jesters and sports figures. It also would be praise worthy to see more display of black men with their wives and babies, I see a trend on television, Caucasians (Edom) are always shown with their children and families while the negroe man/ husband is rarely shown with their babies and wives. It's suggestive programming. How often do you see Negroe sports figures with their babies and husbands/wives in the crowd on camera as a family? Pay attention.

Its good that he is telling "some" of the truth about what really happened....but....the way that he is saying that there were Black people living here and Black people living there ..... how people were helping them, offering them jobs.....how they ate dinner etc......more than likely it didnt play out that way.....they used them for labor....probably gave them scraps from their dinner tables in payment....food they would throw to throw to the animals to eat....they did not sit down to dinner....they probably slept in the barn....he sugar coated some things....to make peoples behavior look better than it actually was
